Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once says, “In nature, we never see anything isolated, but everything in connection with something else which is before it, beside it, under it, and over it.” Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters unveils a clandestine community in Spoon River. Truths and secrets are uncovered through epitaphs. Each individual undergoes a life-changing experience, usually tied to another in the story. Strange experiences occur, such as unspeakable accidents or the stripping away of a person’s glory. Various unexpected events cause numerous people in Spoon River to make poor decisions, resulting in their ultimate demise. Consequences happen, but do they happen for a reason? Dr. Meyers is proud of his name and his legacy, which changes as Minerva takes her last breath. The town disgraces and shuns the good doctor. In Dr. Meyers's epitaph, it also states, “My wife perishes from a broken heart” (Line 13). Dr. Meyers is losing everything, including his name, his reputation, and his family. Dr. Meyers is so focused on himself and his image that karma takes it all away. Karma can be the reason for somebody's end, but it can also be a deception. In the town of Spoon River, it is not hard to be easily deceived. Minerva is horribly deceived by the truth. In Minerva's epitaph, it states, “All the more when Butch Weldy captures me after a brutal hunt” (Line 3-4). Minerva is not the most popular girl in school and is being looked upon by the popular boy Butch. It also shows Butch looking for her at the right moment. In Minerva's story, it states, “He leaves me to my fate at Doctor Meyers” (Line 5). Butch makes Minerva feel special, even knowing that all she wants is to be loved. She is not seen by many people.
