“Eventually in life, we all end up in the position we once had someone else in” (Ashley Lorenzana). Edgar Lee Masters’ Spoon River Anthology is a powerful collection of epitaphs from a small town full of drama and hidden secrets. These epitaphs reveal scandals and betrayals that lie beneath the surface of the townspeople’s lives. They are more connected than one might first notice. The ultimate downfall of many citizens in Spoon River comes from their own choices and their exploitation of others. The actions and decisions of some greedy citizens have a big impact on Spoon River. In the Spoon River Anthology, “Mrs. Benjamin Pantier” shows disdain for her husband, sending him “to live with his dog in a dingy room” (Line 19). For example, “Butch Weldy” describes his fate as “Both legs broken, and my eyes burned crisp as a couple of eggs” (Lines 12-13). His life choices seem to have come back to haunt him. He later reflects on the irony of a stranger’s indifference to his suffering, noting, “fellow-servant of mine. saying over and over, ‘I didn’t know him at all’” (Lines 17, 18-19). Despite his past wrongdoings, he faces retribution for an accident involving someone he didn’t even know. Similarly, “Dora Williams” talks about how she became rich from the deaths of her husband. Her final marriage ends with her being poisoned by her new spouse, as she states, “We went to Rome. He poisoned me, I think” (Line 20). After a life of deceit and cruelty, she gets what she deserves. Her epitaph, “see what they chiseled: ‘Contessa Navigato Implora eterna quiete’” (Lines 23-24), reflects her punishment and forgotten status.
