Catherine Pulsifer once said, “Life presents many choices, the choices we make determine our future. You are where you are today because of the choices you make and those made for you.” Spoon River Anthology is a collection of epitaphs by Edgar Lee Masters which narrates the lives of people who live in the small town of Spoon River. The epitaphs illustrate the consequences that result from the actions of the inhabitants like “Butch Weldy”, “Minerva”, “Dora Williams”, “Emily Sparks”, and “Mrs. Meyers”. A multitude of experiences drives the choices of numerous townspeople in Spoon River, which consequently leads to their ultimate demise. Dr. Meyers is shunned from Spoon River and “Mrs. Meyers” describes how he was a, “Poor soul so sunk in sin he could not see./He had broken the law human and divine” (Line 5,7). When “Mrs. Meyers” references the laws human and divine; she is referring to the Ten Commandments which says, “Thou shall not kill” (Exodus 20:13). This shows how even though “Doctor Meyers” is her husband, she chooses not to stand by him because her religion keeps her from doing so. In Butch Weldy’s epitaph, he begins by downplaying his actions when he remarks, “After I got religion and steadied down” (Line 1). Butch Weldy ruins countless lives in the town of Spoon River. But with this remark, it seems he thinks that he was only a young man who made silly mistakes, but now all of his decisions are forgiven since he is a religious man. Religion influences and guides people’s decisions, conversely fear takes total control over people’s lives like what occurs in the lives of Emily Sparks and Minerva. After the explosion, he learns that someone left the tank on that night, which in turn caused the explosion. At the end of the epitaph Butch is, “...sat on the witness stand/as blind as Jack the Fiddler, saying over and over,/I didn’t know him at all” (Line 19-21). The ending of “Butch Weldy” shows how even after all the horrible ways he exploits, uses, and ruins the lives of townspeople like “Minerva”, “Indignation” Jones, “Doctor Myers” and “Mrs. Meyers”, it turns out that none of those people who hold resentment towards him ruin his life. Instead, it is a total stranger. “Dora Williams” is a woman from Spoon River who marries multiple wealthy men in her lifetime, allegedly kills them, then runs away after gaining their wealth. After the death of her second husband, a scandal occurs and she runs away to Paris where she meets Count Navigato. In her epitaph she says, “I wed Count Navigato, native of Genoa. We went to Rome. He poisoned me, I think” (Line 19-20). Dora’s death being caused by her own husband so he could gain her riches is karma for her seeing as that is what she has purportedly been doing all her life with her two other
