How can someone be both deeply flawed and also deeply loving? No one is pure good or all bad, I will be talking Ed Boone, Christopher’s father and how he was both good and bad. In the novel “The curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time” written by Mark Haddon he made Ed Boone as a good figure but nearer to the end of the book he was made to seem as to be the antagonist of the story but you could also argue against that. In this novel Ed Boone lied to Christopher for many years, he took care of Christopher for his whole life, and that he got Christopher a puppy. Firstly, Ed Boone lied to Christopher for many years that his mother died from a heart attack and Ed hid all of the letters that the mother has sent to Christopher. Yes, this …show more content…
seems harsh to do to your own child and it must of been hard to know that your father has been lying for many years and that your mother has been alive the whole time when you’ve been told that she was dead, but I believed the father when he said he has done this for Christopher’s own good and to protect him from the hurtful truth. Christopher’s mother had an affair with the neighbor Mr.Shears and she left with Mr.Shears, also the mother could not handle Christopher and his problem(autism)as well as Ed Boone, but that's a horrible reason to leave because she could have got some help, like therapy. Ed Boone lied about his mother's death but if he didn’t Ed would have to explain that his mother left to be with someone she loves more than his father and that she could not handle taking care of her own son, both seem harsh but being lied to is not as bad in my own opinion. Secondly, he looked after Christopher for his whole life even though it was difficult at times because of the autism that Christopher had. All kids are different from each other and especially when they have autism they are not all the same, they will all have different quirks and triggers like his foods touching and hating the colours yellow and brown but loving the colour red. Yes Ed Boone is Christopher's father and people would assume that just because Ed is his father that he would stay and take care of his own son, but many parents just leave and abandon their children just like the mother did. Ed Boone knows how to deal with Christopher and his tantrums that he might have, Ed knows how to keep himself calm and cool tempered if Christopher might act out or is he is being difficult to handle. Ed was always there for there for Christopher and will always be there for Christopher when he will need his father's help and guidance. Ed could have left Christopher like the mother did when they found out that he had autism but Ed had faith in him and loved him and he was not going to give up on Christopher when life got hard or difficult because he can persist and get through anything life gave to himself and Christopher. Lastly, this isn’t a major event but it has more of a back story that makes Ed Boone and good father.
Ed gave a Christopher a puppy, Ed gave him the puppy for many reasons, some to ask for forgiveness, some to make up for past mistakes, and just to make Christopher happy which worked. Ed Boone was a good parent aside from a few lie about his mother, and killing Wellingtons dog after he has been seeing Ms.Shears for a bit and Ed getting upset that she loved her dog a bit more than Ed and that she did not want to get serious with Ed. Yes he should have not killed someone else's dog when you are upset but that made Christopher curious ad he tried to figure out who that killer was (he only later finds out that his father was the killer of Wellington) which mad his father upset because he did not want Christopher to find out that he killed the dog and did not want him to be scared or frightened of his own father so the dog was a bit of an apology. The puppy also could be a reward for Christopher passing his big math exam which he was practicing and working on it for such a long time. The last thing that the puppy was for and what is was a symbol of is a fresh start, Christopher solved his mystery of the killing of Wellington, him passing his math exam, and finding out that his mother is alive and can be apart of his life again, and he has someone to keep him company. The puppy symbolizes all of that and was received by Ed, meaning his father wants a fresh start or a beginning of
a new story for their family which could be considered as a good parent thing to do. In conclusion, Ed Boone father of Christopher Boone is both good and bad, he has done somethings that are bad but he did them for the better and those bad things he has done like lie about Christopher's mother's death and killing Wellington but that does not make him a bad person or even a bad parents because for every bad thing he has done Ed has done more good like looking after Christopher and being cool tempered as well as getting him a puppy and those are just two examples of so many more good that he has done. No one can be all good or all bad, Ed might have done a few bad things that might seem harsh to people that do not know the full story, but Ed Boone was a really good loving and caring parent to Christopher in this novel.
Ed...well, he was born and raised in Plainfield. His daddy ran a farm just a few miles outside town. It wasn't long before his daddy up and died–left Ed and his brother alone with that crazy ass momma of their's. That woman was nuts. She went around tellin' them boys that all women was evil. She'd beat'em if they even thought ‘bout courting. When his momma died Ed was near on to thirty years old and still living in his momma's house. He finally took a liking to some gals in town. I guess it was finally safe to talk to ‘em.
Neil tries to make sense of why Effie would become so emotional upon seeing him, and tries to discover more about this mysterious person for whom she is waiting...
The good who is not so good and the bad who is not all that bad.
Ed Boone is often showing his emotions. For example, Blowing up in anger and lacking in confidence to work through problems. A quote that shows this is "It was so complicated. So difficult. And I... I said she was in hospital. And I know it wasn't true. But once I'd said that... I couldn't... I couldn't change it. Do you understand... Christopher...? Christopher...?" However, Judy Boone turns out to be strong willed and an independent person but she has some doubts about her ability in taking care of her child and her limitations. A quote that shows this is “Mother spoke very slowly and she said, "We are going back to Swindon because if we stay in London any longer. . . someone was going to get hurt. And I don't necessarily mean you." this shows that she can take care of her own situations and dealing with Christopher with her own
For example John Proctor he portrayed evil by committing adultery with Abigail and while all the hysteria was going on he wasn’t really attempting to do much until the end, when it directly affected him. However John is good because he wanted to protect his wife, and friends and he did what he felt was right. Another character that portrayed both good and evil is Reverend Hale. In the beginning in a way he provoked the confession out of Tituba, and helped create the hysteria. However, he was good because in the ending he realized the truth and tried to save the lives of innocent people by begging them to confess.
Who exactly is a good person and what about them makes them a good person? In David Foster Wallace’s Good People, the question of what a good person is brought up. Lane and Sherri are Christian college kids who attend the same junior college. Sherri got pregnant before marriage and decides to keep the baby, and while Lane decides to stay supportive he has lost feeling of love for his girlfriend. Two different definitions are brought up, the question is which one is the true meaning of a good person? A good person is either a person who does good deeds but doesn’t truly mean them from the inside or a person who is down to earth from the heart but may not always do good deeds.
While the individual has the ability to do good, they also have the ability to do wrong. Atticus points
More than any other man, Daniel Boone was responsible for the exploration and settlement of Kentucky. His grandfather came from England to America in 1717. His father was a weaver and blacksmith, and he raised livestock in the country near Reading, Pennsylvania. Daniel was born there on November 2, 1734.
Daniel Boone was born on October 22, 1734 and later died on September 26, 1820. He was an American pioneer and hunter whose frontier explorations made him one of the first heroes of the United States. Boone is most famous for his exploration and settlement of what is now the state of Kentucky. Despite resistance from American Indians, for whom Kentucky was a traditional hunting ground, in 1775 Boone blazed the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap and into Kentucky. There he founded Boonesborough, one of the first English-speaking settlements beyond the Appalachian Mountains. Before the end of the 18th century, more than 200,000 people entered Kentucky by following the route marked by Boone.
The characters Ed and Emily are both disturbed people who cannot bear to lose the person they love. In conclusion to losing their loved ones they decide upon murder, although Ed does not kill his ex Terri he does threaten to do so. Emily murders her lover to keep him from ever leaving her side. Ed threatens to kill his ex in order to scare her into staying, but when that does not work he kills himself, not being able to live without her. Both characters show signs of possibly having mental illness or just simply being unstable. One example of this is in “A Rose For Emily”, in paragraphs 26-28 it talk about how Emily would not let the town’s people bury her father. It says, “She told them that her father was not dead” (406). Emily was clearly not capable of dealing with the death of her father, she did not want to let him go. Another example of how the characters display being unstable is in, “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love”. In this short story is says, “Terri said the man she lived with before Mel loved her so much he tried to kill her. Then Terri said, ‘He beat me up one night. He dragged me around the living room by my ankles. He kept saying, ‘I love you, I love you, you bitch’” (411) The characters from both of the short stories showed signs of how they were incapable of dealing with
Terri considers that what Ed felt for her was love. And then Terri continues with her story. He stalks Mel and Terri, at that time Mel was divorcing his ex wife and living together with Terri. It’s a really complicated situation. Ed gains knowledge of the truth and kills himself with rat poison, but it doesn’t work well at first, finally he kills himself by shooting himself in his mouth.
In deciding whether or not a person is good, all of their characteristics must be looked at. That person might look good on the outside, but if their heart is exposed, they may not look as perfect as they thought. In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Brutus is a perfect example of this idea. He is sympathetic, kind, and generous, but when his motives are questioned, he does not look so sensitive. Brutus is not an honorable man.
Phillip Pullman, a British author, once wrote, “I stopped believing there was a power of good and a power of evil that were outside us. And I came to believe that good and evil are names for what people do, not for what they are”(goodreads.com). Pullman’s quotation on the actions of man being the source of good and evil closely relate to morality, principles regarding the distinction of right and wrong or a person’s values. The question of what human morality truly is has been pondered by philosophers, common folk, and writers for thousands of years. However, sometimes a person’s ethics are unclear; he or she are not wholly good or bad but, rather, morally ambiguous.
Many have written entire novels on the topic of good versus evil. Philosophers have spent their entire lives researching and debating and providing theories to somehow find an answer that will never be clear. What makes a person evil or good? In her short stories, “A Good Man is hard to find” and “Good Country People,” Flannery O’Connor explores the theme of good versus evil and differentiating between them and what that conveys about the complexity of human nature.
Both good and evil can coexist inside a person. An example of this is Mrs. Dubose. According to Scout, neighborhood opinion accounted Mrs. Dubose as the meanest old lady who ever lived. Every day when Scout and Jem wanted to head into town, they had to pass by Mrs. Dubose. She would scream mean things at them, calling their father names, telling them that he was no better than the negroes he defended. No matter how quickly Scout and Jem tried to pass her by, she would always make some nasty comment about them. “Not only a Finch waiting on tables but one in the courthouse lawing for niggers! [...] Yes indeed, what has this world come to when a Finch goes against his raising? I’ll tell you! [...] Your father’s no better than the niggers and trash he works for!” (135) This quote shows that Mrs. Dubose is obviously a racist. She yells at Scout and Jem that their father was doing something wrong, ‘lawing
