East Boston is very different from the rest of Boston’s neighborhoods. It is geographically separated by the water and is accessible only via the Sumner tunnel, Callahan tunnel, or the Blue Line of the MBTA. It used to be accessed by a ferry service but the ferry was discontinued in the 1950s (Page 3 of the second book in the kit). It is an ethnic enclave with a large Hispanic and Latino population (page 4 of ACS in kit). This was easily visible when walking through East Boston. As cars were driving by with open windows, loud Spanish music emanated from the radios. An Eastern Bank on Meridian Street had advertisment signs in both English and Spanish to cater to the clientele of the neighborhood. Also, at La Sultana in Maverick Square, the employees spoke to each other (and to Spanish speaking customers) in Spanish only.
On Meridian Street, there was a store called Brazilian Soccer House that had different soccer team jerseys, soccer balls, and a pair of cleats in the window; soccer is very popular in Latin America and Spain. The American Community Survey (ACS) data only shows ethnicity or race, but the ethnographic experience proves that the residents maintain cultural ties to their places of origin or ancestry. It also shows that the younger residents of East Boston speak Spanish

Most of the transformer boxes on the sidewalks were painted with different designs. The transformer box outside of the Brazilian Soccer House was painted with an image of a soccer player at a soccer game. There were also many murals in Remin Park in the tunnels that were painted by neighborhood groups. One thing that surprised me was that the noise of planes was not as loud as anticipated considering how close East Boston is to Logan Airport; it was not even as loud as the sound of plane traffic that goes over my home neighborhood in the suburbs of Greater Boston. I was not able to hear the planes until I got to Piers Park on the
Throughout the early 1900s an American immigrant experience was subject to society’s opinion and the nation’s policies. Various ethnicities endured the harsh reality that was American culture while familiarizing themselves with their families. Immigration thrived off the strength and pride demonstrated by their neighborhoods. Notions of race, cultural adaptations and neighborhood represented the ways by which human being were assessed. In a careful interpretation of Mary Lui’s “The Chinatown Trunk Mystery” and Michael Innis-Jimenez’s “Steel Barrio”, I will trace the importance of a neighborhood in the immigrant experience explaining the way in which neighborhoods were created, how these lines were crossed and notions of race factored into separating these neighborhoods.
However, in Los Angeles and throughout the southwest, the Mexican population had shifted from heavily immigrants into United States-born citizens. These new English speaking, young generation no longer thought of themselves as “Mexico de afuera” but, started to embrace the American clean-cut style at the time. Resulting in new Deal youth programs...
The Pilsen Neighborhood is located Lower West Side of Chicago, extending approximately from Western Avenue and Blue Island Avenue to Sixteenth Street and Canal Street. (Pero.) Today Pilsen has transformed into a colorful, artistic, and beautiful community with the population majority shifted towards the Hispanic. Over the course of these years Pilsen has gone through many changes ranging from cultural to economic and societal changes that have shaped into its present day form. Pilsen’s residents have resisted attempts to gentrify their neighborhood, and have preserved the community as a gateway for Hispanic immigrants.
Immigrants have helped shape American identity by the languages they speak from their home country. Richard Rodriguez essay “Blaxicans and Other Reinvented Americans” reveals Rodriguez’s attitudes towards race and ethnicity as they relate to making people know what culture really identifies a person rather than their race. For example, in the essay, it states that Richard Rodriguez “ is Chinese, and this is because he lives in a Chinese City and because he wants to be Chinese. But I have lived in a Chinese City for so long that my eye has taken on the palette, has come to prefer lime greens and rose reds and all the inventions of this Chinese Mediterranean. lines 163-171”.
Catechism, also known as religious instruction, schooling or teaching coexists with historic and present educational systems. Generalizing on this dogma is the idea that historically, education had the jurisdiction to incorporate religious values into a curriculum. Secular education was not a question of right or wrong, but more of a when and how. Individuals like Benjamin Harris subconsciously disguised religious works in the form of education. The New England Primer of 1777 is his most relevant and popular creation. Based off the Puritan religion, The New England Primer of 1777 imbedded many unique religious and educational principles into early schooling. A book consisting
Throughout Richards early childhood development he quickly understood that in order to succeed in America he would have to learn to confidently speak in English. Richard is Hispanic American and although he was born in America, Spanish was the only language that he was exposed to as a young child. He grew up in a home where Spanish flowed freely, but he soon realized outside of his home the language that he primarily knew was foreign. His parents spoke fluent Spanish along with all of his relatives. The brief encounters he experienced of his parents speaking English were only in public places and the proficiency was very poor. Rodriguez’s home was as a safety net for him and his Spanish speaking family with they are his only real connections to the outside world. It wasn’t until Richards encounter with his teachers that he and his family was heavily impressed on the importance of developing a public language. After the encouragement of the visit home from a teacher as a family
The Hispanic population has experienced an incredible growth in the past decade in the United States of America. In 2006 it was estimated that the Hispanic cover 11 % of the population in North America. Their Origin is in Mexico and the few Spanish speaking countries in the Caribbean. American culture is derived from people who originated from the European nations like Italy and the Great Britain. Cultural identity is very important for every ethnic group as it shapes the culture of that particular faction and therefore, a certain culture cannot realize its own values until it is exposed to another one.
Age wrinkles the body, quitting wrinkles the soul. Many soldiers are quitting Valley Forge and are sometimes called summer soldiers or sunshine patriots because they leave if it gets hard but returns when it gets easy. Valley Forge happened in the winter of 1777 to 1778. The camp was very close to starving. The camp was set up 18 miles outside of Philadelphia. The doctors used live chicken pox on healthy soldiers to try to get the body to reject the chicken pox symptoms. In 1773, 310 streetlights were installed in Boston. I have decided to not re-enlist for three reasons which are: sickness, the conditions, and the deaths.
The neighborhood of Lincolnville was established following the Civil War by freed slaves and, is in the oldest city in America, St. Augustine. The settlement was originally called Little Africa, however, in 1878 streets were paved and it became known as Lincolnville after Abraham Lincoln (1). The Lincolnville District is St. Augustine's most well-known black neighborhood and has been a part of many important events in not only African American history, but also St. Augustine and America. Racism and segregation in the South during the late 19th century and early 20th allowed for black businesses to grow and. As the 20th century progressed Lincolnville became an important part of St. Augustine (2). By 1964, the whole world was focused on St.

There is a lot to do once someone graduates high school. Many people like to change the way they have been living by living somewhere new. Living somewhere new can be a positive thing to do because it is an opportunity to start fresh like a clean slate. After graduating SHS, I should live in Chicago, Illinois instead of New York City, New York. Some things that I had to put into consideration about where I should reside were climate, living expenses, transportation, and entertainment.
What comes to mind when someone mentions “The Big Apple”? Probably the beautiful skyline of New York City and the hustle and bustle of millions of people shopping around Times Square. New York City is a symbol of hope and freedom from people all over the world, and many people agree that it’s a place you should visit in your lifetime. Since not everyone is able to visit “the city that never sleeps”, people can learn much from it’s interesting history, famous tourist attractions, and it’s five famous boroughs.
New York is popularly known as the “City That Never Sleeps” for a reason: there’s always something to do, regardless of what time of the year you visit.
