The New England Primer in Relation to Great Britain and America
Catechism, also known as religious instruction, schooling or teaching coexists with historic and present educational systems. Generalizing on this dogma is the idea that historically, education had the jurisdiction to incorporate religious values into a curriculum. Secular education was not a question of right or wrong, but more of a when and how. Individuals like Benjamin Harris subconsciously disguised religious works in the form of education. Colonialism helps explain why United States and Great Britain share many similarities with the Primer. Essentially, when students from either the UK or the US trained with this religious tool, both would learn that letter “N” reads, “N o a h did view the old world & new” (Austin Pg. 17). A classic component to the Puritan religion followed by a basic educational necessity for reading and writing. A high stress is placed on morals, beliefs and one’s religion which is fine but that starts to leak into the cracks of the democracy component associated with UK’s governing system. The New England and the Southern colonial settlements were united in several areas that created the opportunity for each group of colonies to grow. However, these groups of colonies took divergent paths when it came to the founders’ motives to settle the New World, the importance of religious and social orientation, economic approaches and political developments. These different approaches were ultimately successful beyond the early founders’ expectations.
I believe colonial New England had more of an effect on the American character than Virginia for several reasons. First they promoted more of the values that have transcended into modern day America such as religious toleration, their educational ideas and their focus on the importance of family. And we shouldn’t forget the fact that the American Revolution began in New England so in essence the America we know today would not exist without New England.
After the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus in 1492, the powerful Old World scrambled to colonize it. The three major nations involved in this were Spain, France, and England. Spain took more to the south in the Central American and Mexico areas while France went north in the Canada region. The English came to America and settled in both the New England and Chesapeake area. Although the people in these regions originated from the same area, the regions as a whole evolved into different societies because of the settlers’ purpose for coming to America and the obstacles faced in both nature and with the natives.
In the 17th century, the British colonies still identified themselves as European, but as the colonies expanded and grew more populous, they developed differing geographic, social, and economic systems. This difference between New England, and Chesapeake, is caused by the motivations for settlement between the two regions. While the New England colonies were mainly settled for religious motivations, most notably by the Puritans, the Chesapeake colonies were settled for economic prosperity. Also, while the Chesapeake colonies were mainly settled by individual young men seeking a profit, the New England colonies were settled by families hoping to settle and expand.
During the 1600's, many people in the American colonies led very many different lives, some better than others. While life was hard for some groups, other colonists were healthy and happy. Two groups that display such a difference are the colonists of New England and Chesapeake Bay. New Englanders enjoyed a much higher standard of living. This high standard of New England's was due to many factors, including a healthier environment, better family situation, and a high rate of reproduction.
The New England colonies developed a close-knit homogeneous society and a thriving mixed economy of agriculture and commerce. They developed this by creating a group called the New England Confederation. This focused on the protection of the people in the colony in the event of enemies trying to attack them. On page 49, it says “The primary purpose of the confederation was defense against foes or potential foes, notably the Indians, the French, and the Dutch.” They created this as a safety net for the New England colonies. Every part of the New England colonies had two votes, it didn’t matter on the size of the colonies. The ran it as their own because the king of the time didn’t care much for the colonies.

Schultz also stressed the importance of a biblical worldview in the teacher. As the leader in each classroom the students will adapt their teacher’s beliefs, values and finally actions. If they are taught by a teacher who holds a dualistic view of dividing the sacred and the secular, or a postmodern or modern worldview, it will adversely affect the ability of that child to develop Christ centered wisdom based upon the Word of God. During the 1700's, people in the American colonies lived in very distinctive societies. While some colonists led hard lives, others were healthy and prosperous. The two groups who showed these differences were the colonists of the New England and Chesapeake Bay areas. The differentiating characteristics among the Chesapeake and New England colonies developed due to economy, religion, and motives for colonial expansion. The colonists of the New England area possessed a very happy and healthy life. This high way of living was due in part to better farming, a healthier environment, and a high rate of production because of more factories. The colonists of the Chesapeake Bay region, on the other hand, led harder lives compared to that of the colonists of New England. The Chesapeake Bay had an unhealthy environment, bad eating diets, and intolerable labor.
One of the major themes is teaching the children the basic rules of Puritan religion like how to treat other people in the community. The main point of The New England Primer is to teach the children the Puritan religion and how to behave. For example, The Primer outlines for the children that they must respect God’s sanctuary, obey the people who are superior to you, and pray to God for their enemies. Since the children have to respect various people in the community, another theme is respect and love. Respect is a major theme in the New England Primer because children need to learn to respect everyone in their community, even their enemies. The Primer teaches the children to pray for their enemies which is a sign of respect. They also have to respect their parents, friends, God, men, elders, and superiors. Love is more of a hidden theme within The Primer because it is teaching children not just respect, but it teaches how to love people and treat them too. Also, The Primer is also teaching children how to love and embrace their religion, God, and Christ. Another theme is to not sin but only to do good. In the text, it says, “By no sin ftray, Make no delay, In doing Good.” This phrase is saying do not procrastinate in doing good, and do not sin because it is important to do good not bad. A recurring theme in The New England Primer is the afterlife. The text discusses in the afterlife only believers get resurrected, and they will unite with Christ. In the afterlife, the believers will rejoice with Christ and other believers. Another interesting theme I discovered is being honest. For example, the text says, “I will as much as in me lies keep all God’s Holy Commandments.” The quote represents being honest because it teaches the children to grow up and become honest with themselves as they follow and practice the holy commandments. Although Boston and Newport are located along the East Coast of the United Sates, they are miles apart, both literally and figuratively, in social, economic and climatically diversities. In Boston, Massachusetts every day is unpredictable and chaotic while Newport, North Carolina is best described as quiet and uneventful.

The first colonists were very religious people and their curriculum was very faith-based. It complimented the instruction they received at church and home. As immigrants flooded into the country, life changed dramatically. As the population spread west, the typical family and social dynamics rapidly changed. People became widely dispersed, and the church’s authority and influence was no longer as important. People soon realized the way they were used to educating their children needed to adapt to their new way of life.
