Introduction Personal big data analysis (PDA) as the name implies involves dealing with terabytes of data. The project would be hosted on the cloud on AWS, Google App engine any of the other major cloud infrastructure providers. The heart of the “cloud” is the datacenter. Since the project is a mobile application it would also mean we must take into consideration the impact of wireless telecommunication towers. Key issues The project has two main infrastructure requirements. Storage of the data and parallel processing. Both of these would be provided by Infrastructure as a Service providers (Iaas). The impact of cloud computing has been immense and a major paradigm shift in the way businesses are run. It has led to fewer upfront capital investments and optimized IT spending while also allowing organizations to scale up quickly and efficiently. So for PDA it makes sense to deploy on the cloud. While the cloud will power PDA it also brings to surface the environmental impacts of its engine the datacenter. Key findings from How clean is your cloud? (Cook,G.) are: • Three of the biggest IT companies Amazon, Apple and Microsoft are expanding rapidly disregarding the source of electricity and rely heavily on dirty energy. • Global energy demand from data centers has increased 50% from 2005-2010. It grew by 19% in 2012 alone. This is in contrast to the global electricity consumption which was roughly flat. • Based on current projections the electricity demand from data centers is greater than that of Brazil, France, Germany and Canada put together. • Industry leaders estimate that approximately $450bn is being spent annually on datacenter expansion. All these point to the fact that there will be an ever-increasing demand for e... ... middle of paper ... ...s it is very energy hungry. All the IT companies should bring more transparency to their electricity supply chain and take responsibility for decreasing their carbon emissions as the need for energy will only keep increasing. A green cloud is a sustainable cloud and companies need to invest and innovate as much in this area as they do in the internet services and products. Reference Works Cited 1. Latimer, J. Ever since I was a little kid I loved the performing arts and I never thought that I would eventually fall in love with science . After an intense and challenging year of Chemistry my sophomore year, I was hesitant and nervous in signing up for my junior year science class. Toward the end of my sophomore year my chemistry teacher, Mr. Bowditch, told me he thought I would do well in Advanced Placement Environmental Science. I was in a state of disbelief because I was struggling trying to get a C in Chemistry and I was thinking how was I supposed to take AP Environmental Science class. After a conversation with my parents, they had persuaded me to sign up and we agreed if i didn't like it or it was too hard I would be able to drop the class.
More new products need to be introduced and research needs to be done to find out which products will be most popular and profitable.
Companies all over the nation are trying to become an environmental friendly during their day-today operations. Going green has become a significant trend within the United States. When a company goes green, the business will more than likely benefit from their actions. Going green makes perfect business sense although it can be costly (Crootof, 2014). Global warming damages a business because pollution can affect the price of product and services. A company that has followed the green transformation is AmerenUE's real power company. AmerenUE has officially been cleared by the Center for Resource Solution (CRS) to be green-e certified (“AmerenUE's Pure Power,” 2007). Ethically, a company should run a good, clean, and efficient business. Another company that displays great “green” attributes is New Belgium Brewery. New Belgium brewery focuses on cost effective ways of operating that cause no hard to the environment (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014).
One thing is for sure, large number of companies are starting to face problems and trying to come up with solutions to this crisis. Many suggestions have been made towards companies and some include changing more environmental friendly supply chain. (Carbon dioxide supply chain reporting in a Swedish multinational corporation, 2010). Swedish multinational corporation Entra has stated the fact that there is a relationship between their costs and energy sourcing. Since they are sometimes supplier to their suppliers, the environment pushes Entra and all organizations to look into how they can influence their supply channels. BP Amoco as many other companies, have set a target on reducing Greenhouse gasses. One step that they took was...
By purchasing 41% of its electricity from renewable sources, Dell’s has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions created from their facilities and transport by 16% since 2015 (7). The image below shows the various Dell facilities and the different types of renewable energies they are generating or producing (Figure2) (4). By 2020 they aim to be running on 50% renewable energy sources.
The second key point for Apple is renewable energy their goal was to achieve 100 percent of renewable energy which they have accomplished. In their data center in Maiden, North Carolina they have several approaches of energy efficient element designs. Two of their energy efficient designs were a chi...
This review of Bansal and Roth (2000) and Dangelico and Pujari (2010) aims to advance our understanding on the motives surrounding why companies choose to go green, different types of green products and challenges facing companies that integrate environmental (green) sustainability in product innovation.
Going green in the workplace is a new trend in business. In choosing to go green in the workplace you may be challenged by an elevated initial start-up costs, however savings earned from this investment will more than pay for those initial costs in the future. Many people see this as a controversial issue, and granted it does have its own unique set of pro and cons, but if a business makes careful choices going green can prove to be very rewarding. Companies are doing this to save money on energy expenses as well as deploying it as a means to help reduce the carbon foot-print they are leaving behind.
When every IT professional starts their journey into the IT Sector, they are bound to come across social issues which will have to be dealt with professionally. One important Issue is being green in Information Technology. The earth’s resources are continuously becoming scarce whilst the demand for them increases sharply. Every IT professional should understand that power consumption does not cover the whole green IT spectrum. Recycling dangerous electronic waste, optimising/virtualising servers to distribute workloads, having a long term green policy, reducing your workplace carbon foot print such as the paperless desk and an efficient data centre-business continuity model; these are a few examples of issues that professional must consider as these issues all occur in the green IT world.
(c) Datacenter Efficiency: The power efficiency of datacenters has major impact on the total energy usage of Cloud computing. By using the most energy efficient technologies, cloud providers can significantly improve the PUE of their datacenters.
People are always looking for ways to save money. By using “Green” computer components you can save money and energy. Everyone having a computer powered on days at a time can use up a lot of energy, which will lead to a large energy bill. There is a lot of different ways to adapt your computer to be more energy efficient. Using more energy efficient computer components and changing settings in your operating system will save you big. By purchasing more energy efficient components such as processors, hard drives and computer monitors you can make your computer consume less power thus saving energy.
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is assessment of impacts on the environment due to proposed activity and finding ways to mitigate the environmental impacts.
The world today is vastly different from what it was before urbanisation and industrialisation had taken its toll on the world. Since the turn of the new millennium the issue of the environment has suddenly evolved into a widespread issue which is greatly discussed throughout the world. No longer are humans living in a world where the environment is serene or stable but much rather becoming unrecognisable and diminishing before our eyes. The plants, trees and flowers are life forms which God has created for us to enjoy its beauty but it is now solely up to us and many other organisations to protect preserve and respect how fragile our environment really is.
Efforts to improve the standard of living for humans--through the control of nature and the development of new products--have also resulted in the pollution, or contamination, of the environment. Much of the world's air, water, and land is now partially poisoned by chemical wastes. Some places have become uninhabitable. This pollution exposes people all around the globe to new risks from disease. Many species of plants and animals have become endangered or are now extinct. As a result of these developments, governments have passed laws to limit or reverse the threat of environmental pollution.
