I. Important Concepts
Morrie had many concepts to teach us about aging, dependency and dying. Morrie taught us so much on the subject of aging. He as more concerned with how one person grows older and wiser than he was about the body growing older. He stated: As you grow, you learn more”, and It’s more than the negative that you’re going to die, it’s also the positive that you understand you’re going to die and that you live a better life because of it”. Morrie talked about dependency and that being dependent on others to do things for you in our culture is very demeaning, but that he himself was going to try and embrace it and take what others have to offer with a baby-like innocence, and strengthen his ability to receive it openly and …show more content…

The American culture to depend on others is viewed as a sign of weakness by others. Americans start at a young age learning to be independent, we are pushed to move out of the parents’ home as soon as possible and live on our own. Americans do not want to grow old and depend on their family to care them. Americans view dying as it is shown on T.V., sad and sometimes violent. We are scared of dying because most have not found the true meaning of life and feel we have not lived our lives to our own satisfactions.

II. Class and Textbook Ideas
Older adults are usually challenged to create a positive sense of others’ lives as a whole. That life has order and meaning and this will result in happiness. As we grow older we have to adjust to decreasing physical strength and health. Therefore, as we age we are confronted with situations of illness, death and dependency on others. Se we have to adjust to these changes gracefully and peacefully, to accept be able to death and not be scared of it. Morrie said it best when he said, “When you learn how to die, you learn how to live”.
We are left alone by others passing away creating loneliness so we have to adjust to this. Successfully gaining wisdom and move beyond to create a new life and understanding to pass on to others. All of Morrie’s ideas and beliefs fall right in line with the developmental tasks of later adulthood and very old
