In the movie, “Tuesdays With Morrie”, Mitch’s old professor, Morrie, is diagnosed with ALS. Mitch finds out that he is dying, and wants to fulfill the promise to visit him after graduation. Mitch starts visiting him. He talks to him and goes places with him, but when his condition worsens it is hard to go anywhere. Conflicts arise in his love life and work, but Mitch keeps visiting Morrie every Tuesday. Mitch goes through the stages of grief, and Morrie goes through the stages of death. At the end of the movie Morrie dies, and has a small funeral (those who Mitch says would’ve been invited to go dancing on Morrie’s perfect day). As for Morrie, he goes through the stages of death: Denial, anger, depression, and acceptance. An example of Morrie’s denial is when he states that he dreams of dancing and being free of ALS. For anger, in the mornings he will say to himself, “what in the hell did I do to deserve this!” He also becomes depressed and cries throughout the nights and into the mornings, but tells himself to stop. Morrie also accepts his death, and says many things such as “fear of death means life without meaning” and that he wants to be a living textbook. …show more content…
When Mitch sees Morrie on TV, he couldn’t believe it. Mitch also got mad, and when the person was trying to get the congestion out of him, he asked if he could try and was hitting Morrie pretty hard. He was angry at the disease and needed to get out his frustration. Mitch was bargaining by saying “I’d give all of this knowledge and experience back if it meant you weren’t dying”. He also was depressed and asked Morrie “what if we can’t learn to die” and “what’s the point” and “I don’t want you to die”. Morrie’s criticisms of Mitch were never harsh or inaccurate. I believe impending death dims one’s filter of projecting their opinion. If Morrie was tougher on Mitch he may have weakened their relationship. If he was easier the reality of mortality would have never have been accepted by Mitch. The balance of being caring and concerned allowed for Morrie to reach Mitch deeply.

Morrie is Mitch's favorite professor from Brandeis University, and the main focus of the book is Morrie, who now suffers from ALS, a weakening, incurable disease that destroys his body, but cruelly leaves him as intelligent as ever before. He had taught sociology at Brandeis, and continues to teach it to Mitch, enlightening him on "The Meaning of Life", and how to accept death and aging. After having a childhood with out much affection shown at all, he lives on physical contact, which is rather similar to a baby. He has a passion for dancing and music, and cries a lot, especially since the beginning of his disease. He doesn’t hide his emotions, but he shares them openly with anyone, and stays in the same frame of thinking as he did before this fatal disease struck. Mitch Albom sees him as a man of absolute wisdom.
Which is why he falls under Erikson’s theory of identity achievement. Identity achievement is when a person understands who he or she is as a unique individual, in accord with past experiences(Berger pg 356). Morrie understands who he is completely so he decides to give advice on life issues that most people go through while Mitch records him. During one session Mitch asked Morrie what his perfect last day would be and he gave it in complete detail from start to finish, it started off having a lovely breakfast, then going for a swim, have some lunch with friends, sit around and tell each other how much they meant to one another, go to dinner and have pasta and duck, then dance until he was exhausted, then go home and fall asleep. He had lived his life too the fullest and he knew exactly how he would want to spend his last day.

With the threatening reality of Morrie’s illness looming overhead, Mitch must learn from him just how necessary it is to live life to the fullest. Mitch was living an empty life, a life lacking fulfillment and love. Morrie explained this in a quote “So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they are busy doing things they think are important. This is because they're chasing the wrong things.” He also explained, “The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” Morrie helps Mitch lead a life consisting of love and happiness rather then material possessions. Morrie taught Mitch to live with the key ingredients of happiness and gave him understanding about what those ingredients are, and how to make them apart of his life.
Society tells you to feel pity for yourself, to withdraw yourself from the world and to feel ashem of you are dying and Morrie prove that those expectations wasn’t true. Morrie asked himself, wjen he got diagnoses, “ am I going to withdraw from the world, like most people , or am I going to live the way I want with dignity with courage” (albom 71 ). The way that society expected him to deal with dying wasn;t the way that Morrie wanted to spend his final months. Through every stage of Morrie life, when his illness was getting worses, he never let the disease to have control over the things that he could have control in life. By saying that I’m simply saying that his diagnoses could control his body, but not his emotions. He is the one that has the final say on how he should live and not his diagnoses. Even on his last days he stated, “ this disease is knocking at my spirt. But it will not get my spirit. It’ll get my body. It’ll never get my spirit” ( Albom 163). No matter how much Morrie was going through, he never let his disease have control over his happiness, soul or outlooks on things. Society did not expect him to have happiness and peace, when dying. Society expected him to be sad and low on spirits, but that wasn’t Morrie and he proved to them that their expectations isn’t helpful when going throught this
There was a student in Morrie's social phsychology class that year, his name is Mitch Albom. As Ablom is “talking” to his reader, he also displays his thoughts. Many of these thoughts set the tone of the novel by providing an image of exactly what he is thinking. “It cracks me up. The whole time I know him, I have two overwhelming desires: to hug him and to give him a napkin. (p.31)” Without these thoughts shown to the reader, one cannot understand how much love Mitch Ablom has for his teacher, Morrie. The relationship between the two is an everlasting one that will last forever.
The stages of death are known to be a process of mourning that is experienced by individuals from all phases of life. This mourning ensues from an individual’s own death or the death of a loved one. Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross dedicated much of her career to studying this dying process and in turn created the five stages of death. The five stages are; denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. These stages may not occur in sequence and sometimes may intersect with one another (Axelrod, 2006). The reality of death many times causes a feeling of denial; this is known as the first stage. In this stage, people have many emotions and have a tendency to hide from reality. This reaction is momentary, but should not be rushed. The patient or loved one needs time to adjust to the awaiting death. This adjustment helps bring them through to the next stage; anger. Anger is a common feeling and many times routes from a feeling of not being ready. One lesson Morrie teaches Mitch is about the view his culture has and how we, not only Mitch but also the rest of the world, should not believe what they say. Morrie tells Mitch: “Take my condition. The things I am supposed to be embarrassed about now — not being able to walk, not being able to wipe my ass, waking up some mornings wanting to cry — there is nothing innately embarrassing about them. It's the same for women not being thin enough, or men not being rich enough. It's just what our culture would have you believe. Don't believe it.”
