Culminating Conversation: Dumbest Generation?
This new era of technology has brought a variety of helpful resources, but according to other sources it has also created distractions from social networking. Thus causing the new generation to become ignorant. Every generation calls the next generation the ¨worst,¨ ¨dumbest,¨ and ¨immature.¨ Although that may be, the old generation was the same generation who raised the new generation or at least influenced them to act the way that they do. It is stereotype to claim that an entire group of people are dumb. With the help of technology we have easy access to information unlike the old generation that had to go to libraries and do hours of research. This new generation is not dumb but rather improving

You are able to upload photos of you and your friends or of an event you went to or you can upload a status on how you are feeling. Social media has become a way to show others how you are feeling/doing in life. In the classroom setting it may seem harder for some students to bring themselves to talk in front of the class. However on social media is different and it helps them become more confident. Continuingly, Source 6 talks about how video games improve hand eye coordination among teenagers. When you are playing video games you are basically in a simulation where you are put up to a task to accomplish. Not all video games are violent and can be easily monitored by parents. Also video games are a stress reliever to people and help them relax and unwind after a long day. Also it is just fun to play video games as a hobby. Furthermore, Source 7 clearly states that before text messaging most teenagers wouldn't write anything unless it was for a class assignment. Parents see the teens of today on their computers or cellphones and automatically assume that they are anti-social. When that is not necessarily true, many teenagers prefer to communicate with each other online because it is a more efficient way to talk. After all there is also video chatting for families to talk to each other when they are living in different countries/states. The internet is a helpful tool that brings friends and families
“A Generation of Slackers? Not So Much” written by Catherine Rampell is an informative article about today’s millennial generation after high school. It provides the reader with a deeper look into young people’s work ethic, or what some to think to be, lack-there-of. The author does a fantastic job using research, credible resources, and statistics to support her belief that Generation Y (children born in the 1980s and 1990s) is no less productive than previous generations. I will admit that before reading this piece, I was one of those who believed that Millennials were in fact the “coddled, disrespectful and narcissistic generation” (Rampell, 2011, para 3). After reading this article, my opinion has changed. It has touched on issues
“The Dumbest Generation” by Sharon Begley and “Meet the Twixters” by Lev Grossman both tackle “issues” of the young generation. “The dumbest Generation” deals with the decline in intellect. Begley claims that the young generation’s ignorance does not equate to stupidity, and therefore, it is incorrect to label them as dumb. On the other hand, “Meet the twixters” deals with the decline of the number of young people moving on into adulthood. It claims that young adults are consciously delaying their moving into adulthood not because they are lazy or do not want to assume responsibility, but because there are justifiable factors that hinder them from such transition. While both essays make excellent
There are many people who say that videogames and TV will rot your brain and cause brain damage. Plenty of research and articles are against children playing video games, but there are some that are in favor of video games, and that number is growing every day. Video games can have some medicinal uses from helping patients in physical therapy to improving ones vison. Many people do not see these uses and for every one for video games there are five who are against it, however as that number is slowly growing.
In the article, “The New Greatest Generation—Why Millennials Will Save Us,” author Joel Stein argues the greatness of the millennial generation. Stein uses ample sources and multiple statistics to describe the positive and negative outlooks on the millennial generation. He explains that many people perceive millennials as being ignorant and entitled, yet he counters this opinion with an explanation of why millennials do not take action in their world. Stein uses pathos and clearly states both sides of his argument in order to create an effective analysis of millennials.

Some people argue that the power in which video games have acquired, are contributing to an increasingly safe and more friendly atmosphere in the United States. Many believe that because of video games, teens now have a safe outlet for their anger. Furthermore, the argument that video games are not bad for your health is also a claim many are making towards the positive effect on teens. Many studies have been done regarding the physical effects of video games on the human mind and body. These and many more arguments all have credible evidence to back it up.
Kids that watch more educational and informative shows such as PBS are - less aggressive, usually have higher grades, and are more ambitious in their studies once they get to high school. Continuing on, video games result in people interacting with each other and are more inclined in making new friends. Games help teenagers follow instructions, problem-solving, logic, and hand-eye coordination. While music can act as a coping mechanism and help in improving one's
Videogames are amazing they promote creativity, team-work and social interaction. Video games actually work to increase how good your eyesight is. One study done by scientist’s Daphne Bavelier and her team found that playing five to fifteen hours of action games (e.g., Call of Duty) a week increased how good the participants vision was in two ways "The first way is that they 're actually able to resolve small detail in the context of clutter… The other way that they are better is actually being able to resolve different levels of grey”. Sure games have violence in them but honestly what doesn’t, films and TV are chock full of it, heck even Tom and Jerry promote violence and animal abuse plus there is a reason that those big shiny red “18” stickers are put on games so that it is clearly shown that children aren 't supposed to be given access to these specific types of game. As for the “waste of time” nothing is really a waste of time if you gain something from it such as
...d and bad ways.'” A new research from the article “internet effects on soceity” also shows that average teens send about 100 text messages per day. This is also affecting the teens in the real world too. Teens nowadays are having difficult times getting jobs because they are not used to small talks and giving accurate details.
Nowadays, video games are frequently accused of having detrimental effects on children and adolescents. The main arguments against video games are that they lead to addiction, that they provoke violence, and that they impair social development. Whether or not such claims are true has not been determined with certainty as scientific studies have produced contradictory results. Nevertheless, video games also have beneficial effects, which tend to be underrated, as they do not receive the same level of media coverage that adverse ones do, and are thus unknown to the general public. Some of the positive effects of playing video games on mental development include: stimulating analytical thinking, improving concentration, and encouraging planning and anticipation (“Video game controversies”).
Many people believe that video games change people and mislead them to do bad things, such as drugs and alcohol, but it is the opposite. Gaming prevents people from such acts and actually helps to keep them away from the substances. Lots of people, mainly parents, believe that video games harm people so they try to keep their children away from them. In reality, video games make your life better. Video games can provide many benefits to your lifestyle as “numerous academic studies indicate that playing video games has many psychological and even physical benefits” (Guarini). Gaming helps stimulate the brain and advances your problem solving abilities. There are disadvantages to gaming, which is true, but the amount of benefits outweigh them by far.
Video games have been argued about for decades. Some people have argued that video games are linked to violence. However, new research shows that video games can be used for therapeutic purposes, exercise, stress relievers, positive interactive learning, hand eye coordination, and different types of patient treatment for people all around the world.
Video game have been claimed as addictive, a waste of time, and a distraction. While this does apply to some people, others have found the benefits to playing video games. These benefits include simulating working environments, helping people escape working environments, and giving great experiences. Although these benefits seems to be beneficial, it still stands that video games are a waste of time in which other things can be more productive.
Many people believe that too much time spent watching television or playing computer or video games can be detrimental to children’s development. However, video games can also be beneficial. Gaming, in moderation, helps improve cognitive skills, such as attention, vision, and multitasking.
First of all video games can benefit the person playing the game. Video games strengthen reading and visual skills. In the article “what video games can teach us” by Emily Sohn, Sohn says “because kids are interested in the game, they often end up reading at a level well above their grade.” This statement is true about anything, a person will do things as long as they think it benefits them. In a kids case they believe that reading during the game will help them beat the game. Therefore they will read even though they may not realize that they are improving their literacy skills at the same time as playing the game.A game may improve your visual skills as well. A study made by researchers from the University of Rochester came to the conclusion that video game players gain better visual skills than people that don’t play them. Video game players can keep track of more objects at a time. As well as pick out objects quicker out of a cluttered environment.
