Each year, more schools have some type of dress code. Back in the 1940's women's dress code used to be dresses, stockings, hats, and gloves. Now in 2017 our dress code is shorts that must pass your arm and finger tips, we can not have any straps showing, no abdomens showing. Dress code should not be in schools. The belief that public schools should enforce strict dress codes has been the topic of many controversial and heated debates throughout history. Although it is uncommon for public schools to require uniforms, every school has some type of dress code. Elizabeth Forward High School in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, is no different than the rest of the nation. When caught violating the dress code, some teachers will choose to ignore it, whereas others will send the student to the high school office. If sent to the office, students are penalized with a day of in-school suspension instead of being allowed to call for a change of clothes. At first glance, the prohibition of tank tops, jeans with holes above the knee, and shorts and skirts shorter than fingertip length, among many other guidelines, seems reasonable, but after further reconsideration, it is clear that the dress code at Elizabeth Forward High School is ridiculous and hypocritical. I think that Elizabeth Forward High School should lift the harsh policies because of the temperature fluctuation in the building throughout the school year, recent trends among teens, and the hypocrisy associated with the dress code.
Dress codes are essentials for all schools across America. Dress codes will set the tone for students to be safe because they will help reduce violence, increase student safety, and provide a positive learning environment.
Dress codes have been an issue lately in some schools. Most kids are against it but I believe that there should be dress codes in all schools. This would be a good idea because it would reduce violence and bullying, eliminate the problem of wearing hats or jackets and they are less expensive.
The Dress Code is also to help from distractions like weird, strange clothes, it often distracts the students from learning. Not only that, but in High School there is large groups of gangs, and they can’t wear clothing that represents them and wear anything offensive, because then less violence will occur.
Why I think dress codes should be banned. Dress codes are not equal they are unfair! Dress codes need to be banned! Dress codes don't let kids show their feelings or express themselves. Dress codes should be banned.
Ensuing President Bill Clinton's State of the Union address in January of 1996, more and more public schools are implementing dress codes and uniform policies in their schools. As a result, there has been an increase in legal controversies dealing with the issue. The reason that dress codes are not conclusively enforced is due to the application of the First Amendment to juveniles in the public school setting. The First Amendment states that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Should children in public schools be able to wear whatever they want because of the freedoms classified in the First Amendment? I feel that the answer is no. Institutionalizing dress codes in public schools would do a great good for students and the entire academic community. I base my opinion on the fact that the pros of imposing dress codes outweigh the cons of the argument. By imposing dress codes or uniforms for students, it would eliminate opportunities for the ridicule of less popular or less fortunate students based on their attire, help prevent gang violence and gang members from wearing gang colors and insignia in schools, and generate an overall better academic concentration and discipline in the educational community.
One school rule that I think should be changed is the dress code. Some things on our dress code should be changed. Such as fingertip length shorts, shoulders not being able to be shown (tank tops). Some schools are even beginning to banned leggings and yoga pants. Since I think these should be changed, I will be explaining all of my reasons for each dress code mistake.
Dress code is a set of rules what one can or cannot wear. Most everyone has encountered some sort of dress code whether it was in school, the office or even a restaurant. Dress code in schools was established in 1969 by U.S Supreme Court. This case was Tinker vs. Des Moines Independent School District and involved several high school students that planned protest against the Vietnam War. The court made the decision that schools can enforce dress and can limit student expression. Now most school boards and office administration creates the dress code for their students or workers. There is a big issue with dress code lately because people think that they target women, are sexist, body shames women and is unconstitutional. The growing issue
Rheanne Sargent was given in-school suspension last October for dying her hair pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and she isn’t the only one. All over the country students are being sent home or punished because their hair color isn’t “natural” or their clothing is “unprofessional”. This is unfair and unjust punishment to students who are just trying to express themselves through clothing or hair. Schools should only be able to enforce a clothing dress code if it is proven that it is distracting or harmful.
“ Excuse me young lady, you are showing way too much skin with that shirt! Please go and change before you distract those boys from getting their education.” The struggle of being a girl is difficult. You live your whole childhood not expressing your wardrobe because you don’t want to get in trouble at school. Sometimes when we forget all about the dresscodes, we are called out by teachers or faculty staff and are labeled as a “distraction”.
School dress codes are not a good idea. They have become too strict and limit the students’ freedom of expression, and freedom of speech. (School Dress Codes) A person is given the freedom of expression and the freedom of speech under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.
Would anybody want their freedom taken from them? Nobody would willingly give their freedom up. What’s the next thing thats going to happen, will schools having edible food. Hard to see, right? So are uniforms. Schools should not have uniforms for these three reasons: It takes the students freedom of expression away, it’s a bandaid reason to cover up violence, and some parents might not be able to afford the uniforms.
Choosing what to wear for the day. This is what most students are thinking about when they wake up. Students need the latest fashion in order to fit in, but some clothing may not be acceptable to wear in school. School dress codes are denying students their right to dress how they want, but the dress code is important for the students and their learning. Students are beginning to stand up and want to be heard. Some students are taking action and want the dress code to become less strict but some schools are doing the opposite for safety issues and for the students healthy learning environment. Dress codes are important for a strong and healthy learning environment and is also reducing violence in many schools around the country.
We see stories Social media has more stories of girls being sent home because of dress code violations. Maybe the problem isn’t the students, but dress codes in general. Dress codes ultimately disrupt the pursuit of knowledge for the students, encourage gender bias, and can be dangerous. If we want the younger generations to succeed in the education system, we should utilize school uniforms. Uniforms in schools from elementary to high schools, will promote gender equality and facilitate student safety.
Also it is not encouraging independence and individuality. Many students claim that dress codes restrict their freedom to express themselves. However, teachers and school administrators argue that following a dress code has many benefits, including improved academic performance. “Many school officials argue that dress codes promote school spirit”. But why don't they just make school spirit clothes like sweatshirts and things and students would probably like that more better and make it more fashionable.they spend less time focusing on how they look and analyzing their peers.”
