Dr. Wallace Lee (PhD) a NASA Mission Scientist, thirty-seven years old, Five foot seven, Black hair which is short and cropped, Brown eyes, thin build, very focused, and the man loves his practical jokes. At this time he was studying the impact of the body on long term effects in the Space Station. Two of the astronauts had been at the station for elven months. Dr. Lee was putting them through various types of tests to measure mental and physical facilities. Dr. Lee had been aboard the station four months and was due to rotate out in a couple of weeks. Dr. Erika Sanders was a NASA Mission Specialist and Physician, she’s forty-two years old, currently a Major in the US Marine Corps and assigned to NASA. She’s five foot six, short brown hair, green eyes, athletic build, very focused and can be very abrasive, not much of a filter when speaking to her fellow compatriots on the station. She had been on the space station for eleven months and was ready to go …show more content…
home. She had another thirty days to go, she was tired of Dr. Lee’s tests and had expressed in no uncertain terms to him that she was, but he ignored her and put her through them anyway. Dr. William (Bill) DaFrank (PHd) was a NASA Flight Engineer, he’s thirty-nine years old, five foot nine, bald, brown eyes, thin, but athletic build. Like Erika he had been on the station for a better part of eleven months. He found it all fascinating, any affects to his body he hadn’t felt, regardless of what Dr. Lee might think. He missed his wife and kids and was looking forward to leaving the station in the next couple of weeks, assuming of course the Russians were here when they said they would be. For all three of the NASA personnel it was their first trip to the station and a wonderful learning experience. It had been a dream for all of them their entire lives to travel and live in space. Each hoped that in their life times they would be able to travel outside of the solar system. After Dr. Lee’s prodding and poking Erika and Bill, they returned to their daily duties on the station, which had become routine at this point and somewhat boring. The day to return to earth wasn’t coming quick enough for Erica and Bill, they were in constant contact with family and friends and already making vacation plans on their return home Like many people that have been away from civilization for a while they talked about their first meal they wanted when they got home, and a nice shower or bath not in zero gravity.
They looked forward to a normal workout routine and being able to travel more than a few hundred feet at a time. Not that space station fever was kicking in, they had plenty of activities to keep them busy, not to mention the care and maintenance of the station itself that everyone aboard was responsible for. As they were preparing to eat their dinner meal alarms went off all over the station in particular the American side of it. Bill quickly looked over the instruments and found a possible toxic ammonia leak. He quickly signaled to the others they needed to evacuate to the Russian side of the station. Moving as quickly as they could the two cosmonauts met them at the door that separated the two sections. The cosmonauts reached out, pulling in the three astronauts, then pulling the heavy metal door shut and securing
it. The crew members were all told by mission control on the ground to don masks and take refuge in the Russian segment of the station, which they were all already in. While they were doing this flight controllers at mission control were busy shutting down all non-essential equipment. At the same time others on the ground were executing emergency procedures to try and determine if there really was a problem. Sensors had gone out previously causing the same problem, once that all clear was given, they returned and replaced the sensor. They were all hoping this was the same issue. The ammonia general flows outside of the station and is used to cool the equipment within it. Worst possible scenario is that the ammonia gets into the water supply and makes it undrinkable, which would then require everyone to evacuate. Word from mission control was to sit tight as they were still running diagnostics. Another alarm sounded, this time within the Russian section, mission control quickly ordered them to move to the Soyuz Capsule with was designed for three people not five. They obeyed, cramming all five of them in and sealing the door behind them. Once in, they were allowed to remove their masks, as the capsule had its own environment separate from that of the station. Mission control in Russia was now reporting there was in fact an ammonia leak and at least two of them would have to return to the Russian section, don space suits and fix the problem that was located outside on the hull of the station. Since the suits were pre-fitted for each of the cosmonauts they were the ones that were going to have to take the spacewalk. The most dangerous part of the mission was going into what might be the contaminated section of the station and putting on their suits and not the spacewalk. The ammonia was toxic and would kill them, if inhaled, in a matter of minutes. Each of the cosmonauts felt they would much better die on the walk, if they had to go, that was by far the most glorious. Everyone on the capsule placed their masks back on, they quickly opened the hatch and the two cosmonauts exited as fast as they could. The astronauts quickly sealed the capsule, secured the door and had the environmental system filter the air before they removed their masks again. Unfortunately, the three astronauts couldn’t see what the cosmonauts were doing and wouldn’t have any contact with them until they had their suits on. It seemed like an eternity, then the radios inside the capsule came alive, the two cosmonauts were reporting that they had made it safely and were able to get on their suits with no problems. The cosmonauts as well as the astronauts had contact with mission control in the United States and Russia. Both countries were well aware of the stakes, if they couldn’t repair the leak they would have to abandon it, at least for now, neither country wanted that. The cosmonauts made their way to the airlock while describing over the radio every step they were making. Their training dictated that, it was all being recorded, primarily in the event it failed miserably mission control knew what not to do next time. The cosmonauts exited the station, tethering themselves to key latches as mission control guided them to where the suspected leak was located, the second cosmonaut, Eldre Atkov, carried the satchel with the tools needed to repair the leak. However, the leak was substantial enough it would require the two men to fix it. Moving slowly and purposefully the two men made it to the first spot in fifteen minutes, the leak was visible, Ivan Budarin, the other cosmonaut, was being handed the tools by Eldre to turn off the flow of ammonia, they need to switch out the part as quickly as possible because it was cooling the electronics aboard the station. Ivan loosened the hoses and Eldre shut off the ammonia flow, they both loosened the part and removed it, then secured it to their bodies so it wouldn’t float into space and later on become another factor that may damage that station. Eldre and Ivan both lifted the new part and secured it to the hull and reconnected the hoses, Eldre turned the ammonia flow back on, so far so good. Mission control had notified them of an additional leak, which was twenty-five meters away from their present location. The two cosmonauts needed to move carefully, they had to disconnect from the hull, maneuver around two sharp corners, any one of which would cause problems and launch them deep into space. The two cosmonauts were tethered together, in the event one did float off, while the other maintained a connection to the hull. They leaped from across, they had done this before, while one was connected the other would disconnect, move, than reconnect to the hull, the other would then disconnect, move to his comrade, then repeat this until they were where they needed to be. It didn’t take too long for them to make the next repair; they notified mission control they had completed the mission. Mission control was able to run diagnostics over the entire station, to include the water resources; they made sure it hadn’t been contaminated. By the time mission control had completed their tasks, the cosmonauts had made it back into the station and the all clear had been given. The astronauts feeling somewhat cowardly at this point, because they had left it all up to the Russians to save them, and of course the Russians wouldn’t let them live it down anytime soon.
Lawrence Willoughby, an African American male, was born in 1881 in Pitt County, North Carolina. He was the son of Lannie Anderson and X Willoughby. Lawrence married at 22,a woman by the name of Jennie Best on December 20, 1903. Records says that the two married in Pitt County, North Carolina. They had eight children in 13 years. He died on August 4, 1951, in Greenville, North Carolina, at the age of 70.
A University of San Diego professor whose daughter’s disappearance become a recurring factor in his life, has finally gotten the peace he deserves. After approximately five years of three unsolved murders, assailant David Allen Lucas, was convicted and sentenced to death. Lucas was a carpet cleaner from Spring Valley, CA and was 23 when he first committed a murder, but this was not his first time being convicted. In 1973, at the age of 18 Lucas was incarcerated after being convicted of raping a 21-year-old maid who had worked for a family friend.
Perhaps the greatest problem faced throughout this tale was that of miscommunication. The Merced Community Medical Center or MCMC for short was the place where Lia was being treated. This hospital was the Merced county's only hospital and unlike most rural county hospital it is state of the art, ."..42,000-square foot wing ... that houses coronary care, intensive care, and transitional care units; 154 medical and surgical beds...."3 This was a teaching hospital made up of interns mostly, but also with some great doctors like Peggy Philp and Neil Ernst. Peggy and Neil are married and have children. They graduated together at the top of their class, and have created quite a practice for themselves. Although MCMC is a great rural hospital, it also has the same problems as most rural hospitals do which is the health care crunch, where most of the money goes to the urban hospitals and then the leftover money is spread among th...
Following her passing on Thanksgiving, “Munoz and his wife’s parents told the hospital that Marlise, herself a veteran paramedic, had made it clear to everyone she didn’t want to be kept alive by machines under any circumstances” (Goodwyn).... ... middle of paper ... ... “The Strange Case of Marlise Munoz and John Peter Smith Hospital.”
He was able to aft on the starboard side, although badly injured, he didn't get to the main engine room, No. 2 engine room, where he found No. 2 engine had lost vacuum and that was shut down. He did talk to somebody in No. 1 engine room. They told him that apparently the main steamline going through the port side of the forward engine room had been knocked loose. They had no steam and asked for instructions.
William Clark was ½ of the genius team that made their way through miles of unknown land, unknown nature, unknown natives, and came home with all but one voyager, who was killed of natural causes. William Clark and Meriwether Lewis were the first Americans to try and map the Louisiana Purchase area, and not only did they map it, they discovered allies, new plants and animals, and discovered new land and water routes that could be useful for future travelers.
“Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle,” (John 19:17-18). Jesus Christ’s valiant life was terminated with a horrendous execution. Tom Robinson’s did as well. He lived his life in the name in the name of others, helping everyone that he could, going out of his way to save people, even Judas, who would betray him. Tom did this aswell, constantly assisting Mayella, she who would betray him in court. Jesus had followers who believed in his message, just as Tom had believers in his innocence. Jesus and his followers would face persecution, just as Tom and hisi believers would. The judgements and death sentences of Jesus and Tom would make them become martyrs. The Martyrdoms would be essential for their causes. Many aspects of Tom Robinson’s life and death
Jamison describes another medical figure in her life that she referred to as Dr. M. Dr. M was Jamison’s primary cardiologist, a figure who is involved in some of the most intimate details of Jamison’s life. However, Jamison describes Dr. M by saying she, “…wasn’t personal at all” (14). Dr. M would actually record personal information about Jamison on a tape recorder, however, Jamison would hear Dr. M referring to her as “patient” instead of by her name. This example demonstrates that Dr. M was indeed putting in the minimal effort needed to keep her clients, however, no additional effort was put into the process of learning about her patients. Jamison says that, “…the methods of her mechanics [were] palpable between us…” (18). Dr. M would not even put any effort into disguising her lack of interest of getting to know Jamison. This atmosphere of apathy that is exuded by Dr. M naturally causes Jamison to retract from Dr. M, which creates an environment that is not good for cultivating
Ms. Phillips met us in the waiting area and walked us through the very spacious building to the elevator, taking us to her office on the third floor. She explained to us that the building was once a hospital (W. Phillips, personal communication, October 4th, 2013). This explained the wide doorways, spacious halls, drab atmosphere, and considerable amount of walking it takes to get from one place to the next. Ms. Phillips’ office had very welcoming in décor. Pictures of her child and what seemed to be his artwork, and the work of other children, decorated almost every available wall space. Because the room was once a hospital room, the layout was very strange for an office. Visitors have to sit perpendicular to Ms. Phillips’ desk. Because Ms. Phillips provides in home services, I do not believe this would aff...
A gunman stepped on the stage, told that their aim is to stop the war in Chechenya by taking people in the theater hostages, and ordered them to call their families and inform them about the hostage-taking situation. Chechens secured the place with booby traps, snipers, suicide bombers, and made sure that no one was going out without their consent. Half an hour later, the president of Russia and Russian authorities were informed. An hour later, Russian troops and the police secured the perimeter and started to discuss different possible assault tactics. At the same time, without making any further explanations, Azerbaijan and Georgia citizens, people with small children, pregnant women and kids under the age of twelve were released.
Faced by recent protests and controversial events, memorials and monuments remembering Robert E. Lee and the Confederacy should be removed from public areas because they were not originally built to honor their roles in the army but rather to convey the message of white supremacy and continuing slavery, and into museums or archives, as well as because of the person Robert E. Lee was. Most of the statues were built in the early 1900’s, during a time of racial segregation and the implementation of the Jim Crow laws. It is no coincidence that most of these statues were built during this time, when whites felt and were indeed superior to blacks. The message was clear that they wanted to maintain white supremacy and subjugate blacks. Eric Zorn writes
As I walked into the auditorium late, I noticed that audience was transfixed with their current preoccupation to notice anyone slipping in and out of the room. The first noticeable factor was the medical residence in white coats. Residences are doctors who had recently graduated from medical schools and are focused primarily on the...
In order to become an undercover agent, one must have certain qualities to perform the job correctly. According to Gregory D. Lee’s article, “Undercover Operations,” depending on the undercover case, a undercover agent must have certain knowledgeable qualifications. For example, “If a UC operation concerns drugs, the officer must have knowledge about drugs in general, and specifically how they are bought, sold, diluted, transported, smuggled, concealed, and used. They must also speak the trafficker's "language" and know street terminology for different drugs” (Gregory D. Lee). Lee suggested you have to “know thy enemy” in order to have a successful undercover assignment. You must also be able to play the role of the person or people you
After visiting my grandparents several times I began to explore the hospital floor. Although shy at first, I began to talk with the patients and better understand their situations and difficulties. Each patient had his or her unique experiences. This diversity sparked an interest to know each patients individualized story. Some transcended the normal capacity to live by surviving the Holocaust. Others lived through the Second World War and the explosive 1960’s. It was at this time I had begun to service the community. Whenever a patient needed a beverage like a soda from the machine or an extra applesauce from the cafeteria, I would retrieve it. If a patient needed a nurse I would go to the reception desk and ask for one. Sometimes I played checkers or chess with them during lunch break. I also helped by mashing their food to make it easier to swallow. Soon, however, I realized that the one thing they devoured most and had an unquenchable thirst for was attention and the desire to express their thoughts and feelings. Through conversing and evoking profoundly emotional memories, I bel...
