Dog Bite: How Bad Is It? (Part 1)
Bite levels can range from minor to deadly. Assessing the severity of the bite is the first step to figuring out what to do about it. The following is a version of the bite severity assessment scale originally developed by Dr. Ian Dunbar.
Level 1: pre-bite
The dog snaps or “air bites” but makes no contact with the skin. The “air bite” is a warning signal, not an actual attempt to bite. People tend to think that the reason they weren’t harmed was that they managed to move away in time. However, this is highly unlikely. Humans react very slowly in comparison to the speed of a biting dog.
Owners should take the air bite as a sign that someone wasn’t paying attention to the dog’s earlier signs of displeasure

Level 3A: shallow bite
The dog bites once and punctures the skin, but the puncture is shallower than the length of their canine tooth. This bite may not be severe, but it is both painful and reportable. Once a dog has bitten at this level or higher, they will always be considered a liability, even if their behavior is greatly improved through behavior modification.
Level 3B: several shallow bites
The dog bites multiple times, leaving skin punctures that are shallower than half of their canine tooth. Multiple bites usually mean that the dog is reacting without thinking between bites, and this indicates a high state of arousal.
Level 4: deep bite or slashes
The dog bites once, leaving punctures deeper than the length of the canine (meaning that the dog bit and then clamped down) or the bite produces slashes in both directions from the puncture (meaning that the dog bit and shook their head).
Level 4 bites are very serious. Unlike previous level bites, these show no inhibition in strength. While any of the lower bite levels should act as a warning sign indicating that the owner should seek help from a qualified behavior modification specialist, a level 4 bite indicates that the problem has been building up and neglected for a long time, possibly years. A dog biting at this level presents a severe liability to the owners, both in terms of money and family members, because a level 4 bite can kill a
Nanuk was abused at an age as early as four months old. Even though Nanuk was fully grown at the time, he could not defend himself from the barbaric mailman, Harvey. Harvey began abusing Nanuk by jabbing him repeatedly in the head with a wooden stick. It was only four months later did Harvey decide to use a slingshot on Nanuk. If anybody, including a dog, is treated this way from as young as 4 months old, there is no chance this will not affect their life and behaviour. Nanuk acts violently and “remained at a slight distance, his lips drawn back in the devil's grin”(Page 34)

In the short story The Dog Who Wanted to Die by Colleen Archer the protagonist, David, persecutes and desecrates his neighbor's dog for a long time for no justifiable reason; until one day he undergoes a very dangerous situation and it is saved by the same dog he victimized, Monty. Since David’s father left he has shown to be a troubled kid, on the matters of being desensitized and careless. As The Claphams had just moved in with an obese and sorrowful dog, the timing made it perfect for David to excruciate the hopeless dog. The day after David’s father left “he picked up a stone and raised his arm. Then David, who had never deliberately hurt a living thing before, bounced the stone right off the fat dog’s head”. Explicitly, it is atypical for someone who never hurt a living thing to stone a dog’s head, certainly David has some anger issues given the whole situation.
An increasing number of pit bull attacks have occurred over past decade. People who are attacked by pit bulls always suffer serious injuries because of the pit bulls’ sharp teeth and strong muscles. In October 19, 2009, Dr Hugh Wirth who is the RSPCA’s Victorian president renewed calls for American pit bull terriers to be bred out of Australia. The current laws require owners of pit bulls to register their pit bull. While some people are satisfied with the laws because they think that they are safe, others disagree. From my own perspective, the laws should be improved. The government should ban these fierce dogs and wipe them out instead of just registering them. In my opinion, there are three reasons why I am in favour of Dr Wirth’s proposal.

To say that a dog is “aggressive” can mean many different things as well. Aggression includes a range of behaviors that have specific warning signs and can climax into an attack. A dog that displays such signs to people usually exhibits stay away warnings, such as becoming very still and rigid, guttural bark that sounds threatening, lunging forward or charging at the person with no contact, mouthing, as though to move or control the person, without applying significant pressure, a growl, showing teeth, or a quick nip that leaves no mark. More severe gestures are bites ranging from no marks on skin to bruises and puncture wounds, and repeated bites and shaking.
If your love bite is only a few hours old, rubbing alcohol on it is another great treatment. All you need is some alcohol on a cotton ball and rub on and around the hickey for a few minutes. This will minimize irritation. Rubbing will alcohol might dry out your skin, so you can apply moisturizer afterwards. Repeat this process a several times daily for 2 days.

The Pitbull terrier, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, and Doberman Pinscher are well known for being dangerous dog breeds. But what makes these dogs more dangerous than other dogs? Dog attacks are a common problem throughout the world, more specifically in the United States and the United Kingdom. According to Safia Gray Hussain, “Dog bites now rank among the top causes of nonfatal injuries, and are responsible second only to baseball and softball injuries for emergency room visits.” (Hussain 2850).
A dog was bit by a skunk last Wednesday night in a North Fargo neighborhood. This skunk was sent in for testing and results came back positive for the Rabies Virus. Luckily the dog that was bit by the infected skunk was vaccinated, but is still being watched for signs and symptoms of the disease. The Rabies Virus is dangerous because it causes a disease of the brain, this disease can even cause death (“Rabies,” 2013). The early symptoms of Rabies are very similar to the flue and include, but are not limited to nausea, headache, vomiting, and fever. If you are bit by an animal you should seek immediate medical attention, your doctor will then decide if treatment to prevent Rabies is
