What does diversity means and what is the importance of it in the workforce? Well, diversity means the state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization, but when one speaks of diversity in the workplace, it is far more than just color. Diversity is an assortment of how employees function. It surpasses, race, gender, personality, age, education and any other category. Other advantages will be that of new language skills, global understanding, new processes, and new solutions to difficult problems. With technology improving and advancing every day, there is always more and more competition for these organizations, so diversity can be a powerful weapon in these organizations. There is no time for thinking anymore when everything is moving at a fast pace, so new processes and multiple skills can result when people with different ideas come together. By diversifying to people of all backgrounds, American industries and organizations can have an advantage by gaining a greater perspective on how different cultures operate, thus obtaining experiences and greater success in global business as a result of diversity. This is highly important especially since many companies interact with different cultures and clients. If not dealt right, diversity can cause some issues such as miscommunication, prejudice, racism, lack of respect, disabilities, generation gap, harassment, consistency, ethical and cultural differences and lifestyle acceptance.
Although communication in the workplace may have its ups, it also come with its down, such as it can place impediments in the way of effective communication, which can directly dampen productivity and the cohesiveness of small groups.
How can one fix the issues of diversity in the workforce? In my experience in the workplace, I would say to just easily get rid of the problem by firing those who make the work environment difficult for others to work in. I have learned that this is not the best way to handle business as this is also a lost for the business financially.
