Popular media such as music, television, and social media apps in addition to film affect the way that individuals view the world, and form thoughts and opinions. People are heavily influenced by the media they consume. Marshall McLuhan often quotes in his book Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man the coined term: the medium is the message. This explains that the methods and forms of media used for communication have a direct impact on the messages that are delivered to society. Racial representation within media that is communicated to the masses through forms such as film, television, and music is crucial because it aids in the development or the downfall of society. While it was found that the film industry and popular media should include more people of color in their stories and messaging, it can also be stated that due to different topics surrounding forced diversity in film and popular media people have been upset with the trend of using diversity and inclusion of people into different spaces. There should be more racial representation in popular media and film because it influences the messages that are produced in society and affects the individual. Additionally, the lack of racial representation in popular media and film does not fully represent the diverse world people live in, creates social divisions, and promotes unconscious racial bias. Even though it might be tough to include everyone, this is an aspect that the film industry and popular media should strive for because again it represents who we are as people and the humanity aspects of it which include empathy and compassion towards
