Media affects everyone and everything; There is no escape.
Media is everywhere and surrounds everything. Henry
Jenkins and Marshall McLuhan have differing points of
view as to what the meaning of media is. They both,
however, have their particular ponits which they describe
well. Jenkin's talks about the different types of cultures that
exist, focusing on popular culture, in his essay, "What
Everyone Should Know About Popular Culture." Mcluhan
talks about the concepts of Narcicism and the "Global
Village." Both Jenkin's and McLuhan's ideas can be
focused on a particular thing, such as Baseball. That can be
further broken down and analyzed at the team level.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have most recently been the
center of attention due to the top media coverage of the
team. The team does, however, have a great history. They
were originally known as the Brooklyn dodgers until they
made a move to Los Angeles in 1958. They then became
the Los Angeles Dodgers and their owner became Walter
O'Malley. He was the owner and president for the next
twenty years. After that, he passed the team down to his
son Peter. This is a great example of Jenkin's definition of
Folk Culture. A very important item was passed down
from generation to generation of O'Malleys, eventhough the
item was quite massive. Throughout the years, however,
the Dodgers were much a part of popular culture. Baseball
was known as "America's Favorite Past-time," and still is.
The tradition that the O'Malley family had with the Dodgers
lasted until 1998, when a big corporation, the FOX group
owned by Rupert Murdoch, took over the team. This was
a time of chan!
ge, but some could argue was for the best. Being owned by
the FOX group means there is more media exposure for
the team.
Now that the team is owned by Rupert Murdoch,
McLuhan's ideas about media can be implemented.
McLuhan's concept of narcicism can clearly be seen with
the transition of the Dodgers from family-owned to
corporation-owned. The availability of large funds to
acquire key players makes the Dodgers seem narcicistic.
People can think that they love themselves so much, that
they will do anything to win. Most recently, Kevin Brown,
one of the league's top pitchers was signed to a 105 million
dollar contract for 7 years. This is the biggest contract in
baseball history. This and other aquisitions was supposed
to lead the Dodgers to excellence this year. Unfortunately
for Dodgers fans, this did not happen. The team is 20
games out of first place with no chance of making post
season play. All that can be done is look back and start
thinking about next season.
On July 27 1959, A new York attorney named William shea had an idea of putting a new baseball team in new York since the dodgers and giants had left for california. So on march 1st 1961 His wish was granted. The new York metropolitan baseball club or “the new York mets” were introduced into the national league. The name of the team was chosen by owner Joan Payson. The other names that were put into thought were the rebels, skyliners, nybs and avengers just to name a few.On April 11,1962 the mets played their first game in franchise history and lost 11-4 to the St Louis cardinals. The first season was a miserable one.Manager Casey Stengel led the mets to a 62-100 record,The worst record in major league history. After a couple of more losing seasons, The mets finally made a move and signed pitcher Tom “the franchise”Seaver, one of the best pitchers who ever played the game. They also picked up power hitting outfielders Donn Clendenon and Tommie Agee. Finally the mets looked like a baseball team.Entering the 1969 season, my father said the mets wewr 160-1 to win the World Series, but the mets shocked everyone winning the national league championship. Now, this is how the mets won their first world series, The batter was cleon Jones, after striking out manager Gil Hodges notices a black mark on the ball. The black mark was shoe polish. Putting shoe polish on the ball makes it spin more and makes it much easier to strike out a batter.
In 1987, Cal had a dream come true. His brother Billy joined the Orioles and the team was managed by his father Cal Ripken, Sr. His Father was manager of the team until the beginning of the 1988 season. The Orioles started the season by losing the first six games. The teams owner and general manager made the decision of removing Cal Ripken, Sr. as the manager. Cal Ripken, Sr. was put back as third base coach. Cal Jr. understood, because he knew these things happen in baseball.
...rises me that little to few people know the true past of California and I believe that it should be taught in high school. I also never knew about the unfortunate circumstances of all the Chicanos that were relocated and lied to in order to build the Dodgers Stadium. Being relocated by force essentially and promised a better living condition where they have priorities that was never built. I have been a Dodger fan my whole life and never thought about the location of the stadium and how they obtained it. The worst part is I see so many Chicanos at the games and are die hard Dodger fans that don 't know the complete story.
Availability of nerve block therapy, chiropractic treatment and high dose of pain medicine which will promote numbness, reduce sciatic nerve pain, minimize fatigue and decrease pain sensation. Branch Rickey was the club president and general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and had the secret goal of signing the Negro Leagues' top players to the team. Although there was no official ban on blacks in organized baseball, previous attempts at signing black ballplayers had been thwarted by league officials and rival clubs in the past, and so Rickey operated undercover. His scouts were told that they were seeking players for a new all-black league Rickey was forming; not even the scouts knew his true objective.
The signing of Alex Rodriguez proved that Latin American athletes deserved to sign big money contracts just like the other players. Teams are taking are taking advantage of the abundance of talent in Latin America. All major League teams are active in the Dominican Republic. The Dodgers, the first team to move into the Latin American market, scout the area’s talent closely. About one hundred and four of the two hundred and thirty-seven minor-leaguers they had under contract at the start of the year were from that region.
There was good reason the Sox were susceptible to the lure of quick money. They were
Chicago Cubs baseball goes all the way back to April 25th, 1876 when they played the first game in the history of the Chicago National League Ball Club. However; at the time, they were not known as the “Cubs.” In general, they were known as the “White Stockings.” But a select few referred to them as the “Colts,” or “Orphans.” The team played in only five different locations in the 1800s because of the lack of places to play baseball at the time. As years went by, the league became popular, becoming one of the sports first dynasties. Chicago won six of the first eleven inaugural National League Championships (Cubs Timeline). In 1902, Frank Selee began managing Chicago to debut his managerial career. Just like managers, the name changed as well. A local newspaper penned the nickname “Cubs” for the first time. The name grew on people over time and was officially adopted in 1907. The year after that, victory arose in the city of Chicago. The season was filled with some of the greatest old-time baseball players. The batting line-up consisted of many good hitters and not jus...
Malcolm X's life was a life with a lot of conflict and violence in it. Malcolm X was born under the name of Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska in 1925. His father was a baptist minister and an outspoken follower of Marcus Garvey, the black nationalist leader of the 1920s who preached that all blacks should leave the US and go back to Africa.
Malcolm X is considered one of the greatest civil rights activists in history. He was known for his somewhat violent message of blacks defending themselves. Despite his original message, he eventually became more peaceful toward whites. However, as his legacy was just beginning to change things for the good, he was abruptly killed by gunmen. Due to his indecisiveness and early death, Malcolm X had a great, yet inadequate impact on the civil rights movement.
In the late Seventies, America became shocked and outraged by the rape, mutilation, and murder of over a dozen young, beautiful girls. The man who committed these murders, Ted Bundy, was later apprehended and executed. During his detention in various penitentiaries, he was mentally probed and prodded by psychologist and psychoanalysts hoping to discover the root of his violent actions and sexual frustrations. Many theories arose in attempts to explain the motivational factors behind his murderous escapades. However, the strongest and most feasible of these theories came not from the psychologists, but from the man himself, "as a teenager, my buddies and I would all sneak around and watch porn. As I grew older, I became more and more interested and involved in it, [pornography] became an obsession. I got so involved in it, I wanted to incorporate [porn] into my life, but I couldn’t behave like that and maintain the success I had worked so hard for. I generated an alter-ego to fulfill my fantasies under-cover. Pornography was a means of unlocking the evil I had burried inside myself" (Leidholdt 47). Is it possible that pornography is acting as the key to unlocking the evil in more unstable minds?
Do you think baseball's lost its edge? Most people think baseball's lost its edge and i don't see why. I mean yeah baseball is one of the most boring sports to watch but it's also the most exciting sport to watch. You will see some of the most amazing/craziest plays in baseball.
Malcolm X attended school and did well academically; he was only black student in the classroom. His goal was to become the first black lawyer .The defining moment in Malcolm life is when he shared his career goal with his teacher. Malcolm’s teacher stated “one of life’s first needs is to be realistic”...
From politics to weather, anyone who works for news media knows that they have to be unbiased on the information they report to millions of Americans. As citizens with little free time,we have no choice but to trust what information is given in newspapers, radios and televisions. However, only 4 out of every 10 Americans say they truly believe what their news channel televise, a historical low in America. News channels, especially in the big corporations, are being corrupted with prejudice information, imbalance of news coverage, and distorted stories.
“At MSNBC … 85 percent of airtime is dedicated to commentary — rather than straight news” (as cited in Kiener). The fact that over three fourths of the airtime for a news media source is commentary shows the degradation of trustworthy news reporting. Mainstream news sources are losing their credibility through their slanted reporting and lack of objectivity.
