Ethics and business is an inherently complicated field and some people consider the two ideas to be mutually exclusive. People are concerned with making an argument regarding the importance of communication within the world of business ethics. It will make this argument based on an understanding of what is termed 'diversity.' This idea is understood to be both a social responsibility for businesses the world over, and a definite point of confluence between the business and ethics. Through a thinking of diversity it is possible to make an argument concerning the importance of communication. The word itself can refer to the amount and the range opinions which are present in any business team. It is generally accepted that diverse teams produce better results, and it has even been argued that one of the major roles of a team and business leader is to ensure that they are able to encourage and maintain diversity within their business and within their individual working operations. Sheard writes that; 'Diversity may be understood as that thing which describes the concentration of different ideas and backgrounds taking part and playing a role in an organised team or unit' (2009, 57). Not only does it make good business sense to encourage diversity but it is also clearly a matter of social ethics and relations. For example, diverse businesses or businesses which are concerned with encouraging a high level of diversity are much more likely to employ individuals from ethnic minorities or people who may have experienced discrimination in other areas of their life. One study has recently noted that 'While many businesses and workplaces are willing to follow basic diversity policies in terms of their paper work, often those who consulted do not feel as if their opinion was being taken in to account or that they had full room in which to contribute to the development of projects taking place' (Alison, 1999. 87). As a result of this, it can be seen that to engage in seriously diverse team management and business it is important to maintain a constant degree of communication.
