Diversity and Multiculturalism are often used interchangeably. But these two words are vastly different in definition, function and in execution in the workplace. Diversity explains the various differences among the people (employees) in the workplace. On the contrary, the term multiculturalism refers to the existence of many different ethnic and/or cultural groups within a society. In this case, the society being referred to is the workplace environment.

While diversity and multiculturalism may not be essential parts, job satisfaction could be considered one of the most important parts. Job satisfaction does not affect diversity and multiculturalism. One could be completely satisfied with their position in a non-diverse or monocultural workplace. However, diversity and multiculturalism can affect job satisfaction adversely or positively.
According to Greenberg (2004) the positives of having a diverse workplace include increased adaptability, broader service range, variety of viewpoints, and more effective execution. According to Storey (2011) ‘effective communication is a key component to any organization’s success. But with diversity and multiculturalism there could be a strong disconnect with communication’. Different cultures have different ideas and moral values surrounding what their culture believes to be appropriate clothing, hand gestures, body language and other subtle nuances in the workplace. With differing cultural ideas and expectations comes a differing acceptance level. While some employees may be okay to adhering to their coworkers or supervisors ideas of appropriate workplace attire, another employee may not. This could lead to breakdowns in communication and a disconnect of the team. According to Alessandra, A. J., & O'Connor, M. J.(1998), the teamwork and motivation that happens at work are pivotal to an organization or company’s success. Therefore, if the communication breaks down and the team falls apart, there is no advancement which could potentially mean no increase in revenue. . Another barrier could be actual spoken (or signed) language(s). When there is more than one language spoken in the workplace for work related business, there is a larger opportunity for miscommunication. Valuing diversity means creating a work environment that respects and includes differences, recognizing the unique contributions these differences can bring, and maximizing the potential of all employees and the company. Dental professionals have a commitment to respect diversity and create equity of access to dental care for everyone (GDC, 2014). Diversity describes any dimension that can be used to differentiate an individual from others. It requires understanding that each individual is unique and accepting and respecting these individual differences (QCC,2013). These differences could be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender, age, socio-economic status or other ideologies (QCC, 2013). Understanding the impact that these differences may pose is vital in dealing professionally with people from diverse backgrounds and delivering equal treatment for all. Equality refers to identical treatment in dealings quantitates and values (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Thus, creating equality for all might not mean that there are no disparities between different groups. Equity on the other hand refers to fairness and the equality of outcomes and involves recognizing aspects of a system that may disadvantage a certain group and correcting them (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Therefore, in order to overcome potential pitfalls that may create inequity to access, there is a need to explore the different factors encountered in our diverse society that may create these issues. As an example, patients from different ethnic backgrounds may be faced with barriers accounting for the less frequent use of dental care (CQC. 2010). This group will be used as an example and some of the issues behind this inequity of access will be looked at further.
Throughout history, there have been various perspectives of multicultural differences. According to Meriam Webster (n.d.), culture is “the beliefs, customs, arts, institutions, and the thoughts or products of a particular society or group.” Unfortunately, African Americans, Native Americans, Italians, Irish, Jews as well as various other cultural groups have been profoundly discriminated against and negatively stereotyped (Good Therapy org.). With the frequent mingling of cultures in educational settings, the workplace, and in the social arena, we are bound to encounter cultural differences.
Workplace diversity includes the attributes, elements, and differences that set a person apart from others in the work setting. There are many factors that influence diversity including age, race, culture, gender, ethnicity, birthplace, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, education and work
Traditionally, diversity refers to an assortment of races, ethnicities, genders, ages, disabilities and perhaps sexual orientations. A definition of diversity, however, should not be constrained by traditional categories such as these. Such a definition should also include categories such as religion, educational level, life experience, geographic location, socio-economic background, marital status and work experience. Indeed, each person employed by a company possesses unique qualities that encompass many factors.
Diversity refers to the ways people differ from each other. These ways are significant and plentiful. Functionally, people vary in the ways we think, learn, process information, respond to authority, show respect and reach agreements (Pollar & Gonzalez, 2011.)
The impact of diversity in the workplace is contingent upon several factors. Across companies diversified workforces are becoming increasingly common. To successfully manage a diverse workforce, organizations are ensuring that employees understand how their values and stereotypes influence their behavior toward others of different gender, ethnic, racial, or religious backgrounds; are gaining an appreciation of cultural differences among themselves; and behaviors that isolate or intimidate minorities are being improved (Noe et al., 2010, pg. 302).
Adapting a multicultural perspective includes maintaining a unique understanding of one’s own cultural background and biases, and continuously striving to work through them. In the article, “White Professors teaching About Racism: Challenges and Rewards,” Smith and colleagues sought to address the challenges that white educators face when instructing multicultural courses, and to provide them with useful techniques to incorporate into their educational pedagogies. These challenges stem from their racial class orientation and can be summarized as fitting into one of three categories: (a) multiculturalism perfectionism, (b) multicultural impostor syndrome, and (c) multicultural projections (Smith, Kashubeck-West, Payton1, & Adams, 2017).
