It is no secret that in the world that we live in there are many different cultures and religions. But the question is can we take these many different walks of faith and bring them together to become a more diverse society. But we need to know what diversity truly means. Diversity is “the state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization.” The society that is currently around has started to believe a huge lie that is doing more harm than good. The lie is that if someone has a different belief than you that you must live life in fear of them or in a hostile manner towards them. This also goes with religion as well, people want to be involved with those of the same faith or no faith so that there is no conflict. But this creates conflict in the world because then these homogenous groups are made and then want nothing to do with one another. So in order to make progressive steps in the direction of having a more knowledgeable religious diverse society people have to come to the understanding that there are a multitude of other religions in the world and that they all have different beliefs. Coming to this realization is not easy though. Because first people have to “be aware of their own biases and prejudices” (Dogra,2) so that they can overcome them and move on to acknowledging others beliefs. Helping give a religion a good name rather than continuing to let the bad name carry on helps people of that religion better fit into society. It doesn’t seem like much just trying to share with others the experiences that you have had and what you learned. But if everyone did a small part in helping to inform others of the beliefs of different religions and their celebrations then the society that is around will help feed onto the next generation. In doing so that generation will carry on and learn from the past and help make everyone more knowledgeable and diverse. Dental professionals have a commitment to respect diversity and create equity of access to dental care for everyone (GDC, 2014). Diversity describes any dimension that can be used to differentiate an individual from others. It requires understanding that each individual is unique and accepting and respecting these individual differences (QCC,2013). These differences could be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender, age, socio-economic status or other ideologies (QCC, 2013). Understanding the impact that these differences may pose is vital in dealing professionally with people from diverse backgrounds and delivering equal treatment for all. Equality refers to identical treatment in dealings quantitates and values (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Thus, creating equality for all might not mean that there are no disparities between different groups. Equity on the other hand refers to fairness and the equality of outcomes and involves recognizing aspects of a system that may disadvantage a certain group and correcting them (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Therefore, in order to overcome potential pitfalls that may create inequity to access, there is a need to explore the different factors encountered in our diverse society that may create these issues. As an example, patients from different ethnic backgrounds may be faced with barriers accounting for the less frequent use of dental care (CQC. 2010). This group will be used as an example and some of the issues behind this inequity of access will be looked at further.
Minority is a broad term that classifies my family and me. This term can mean something bad and something good, depending on who’s perceiving the term. For me, personally it is a little bit of both. Being part of the minority group, it can and has been a barrier in my educational pursuit. However, it does not stop me from trying to reach my goals, it is like a motivation.

I am saying that just like race and ethnicity, religion is another way to set someone a part from everyone else. With religion being a main source of conflict, it only takes one event to cause whatever conflict to escalate. The solution to this is to promote peace. Learning about other religions could help bring down the violence level so that you have a better understanding of what cultures and religions are around you. Being well educated about other religions does not mean you are converting over, it just means you are taking a step forward in bettering the world, as well as yourself. Therefore, we must educate, learn, and live to the best of our abilities so make the world a better and safer place.

Throughout history, there have been various perspectives of multicultural differences. According to Meriam Webster (n.d.), culture is “the beliefs, customs, arts, institutions, and the thoughts or products of a particular society or group.” Unfortunately, African Americans, Native Americans, Italians, Irish, Jews as well as various other cultural groups have been profoundly discriminated against and negatively stereotyped (Good Therapy org.). With the frequent mingling of cultures in educational settings, the workplace, and in the social arena, we are bound to encounter cultural differences.
America is full and rich with diverse people, religions and values; they make America great. Just look at Riverside, California, there are over fifty churches of different denominations of Christianity, three synagogues, two temples, and one mosque; all coinciding peacefully in the city (Yellow Pages). Because Riverside is so diverse, religious pluralism and religious tolerance are two steps in making Riverside more connected. The first step is tolerance, a reflex that acknowledges a person will come across people of a different faith. The second step is pluralism, which is a better understanding of a person’s religion as well as the other religions around them. Many believe pluralism is the better of the two, because of the interaction involved and the creation of harmony, but pluralism’s faults are greater than the benefits. Currently religious pluralism is quality America should strive for, but America is not ready for pluralism yet, so religious tolerance is best for the diverse population of America today.

Every person their own unique attitude and beliefs that will affect their understanding of diversity, equity and democracy due to the fact that everyone is brought up differently. Diversity means range of different things, where if a person is exposed to more experiences in life, their understanding of diversity is in a much wider range. Modern American culture praises the concept and thought of diversity through cultural awareness, but fails to actually follow through with the act of diversifying within the society. This is due to the fact that people want to be around other people who think, act, look, and behave in ways that are very similar to their own. Americans are not only drawn towards people who look like them, but they are also drawn towards those who hold similar values and positions. This desire to be near others who share similar traits and values goes against the desire to be diverse. Today's society is constantly calling for more diversity, yet no one desires to act upon this call and put it into practice correctly.
