Doménikos Theotokópoulos is a very famous Greek painter from the late 1500’s. He is also known as El Greco, which is spanish for the greek. El Greco was born in the year 1541. His father Georgios was a tax collector and his older brother Manoússos was a merchant. There is no found information on his mother. One of El Greco’s famous portraits “Fray Hortensio Félix Paravicino” is a great example of how he elongates people in his paintings. Robert Hopkins’ article “ El Greco’s Eyesight: Interpreting Pictures and The Psychology of Vision” explains how astigmatism could affect the way someone would paint. Astigmatism is an irregularity in the shape of the cornea in the eye. It causes for light to enter in two different places which would cause
blurriness. Hopkins was certain that astigmatism does elongate objects vertically or horizontally. Since El Greco’s paintings were known for being vertically elongated it must have been because of his eyesight. Paragraph 3 Four centuries later, Jackson Pollock, the abstract American painter, was mesmerized by El Greco’s work. In his two earliest sketchbooks there were over sixty drawings emulating El Greco. As he grew up he bought books and replicas of his artwork. Jackson Pollock considered him to be one of his inspirations.
Surprisingly, fifty years later, artist John Sloan happen to meet all the qualifications Baudelaire has designed for Monsieur G— making urban life observations and drawing from memory. Sloan adopts and employs Baudelaire’s idea of urban watching and further expands it for an American audience. Born and raised in Philadelphia, John Sloan first begun his art career as a newspaper illustrator. After years of working, he developed his own artistic style and started making paintings and etchings. When he moved from Philadelphia to New York, he has found that city life scenes of great interest that he then started observing and making etchings for scenes of modern life. He was well-known and celebrated as the founder of the Ashcan School and was most celebrated for this urban genre scenes. (Lobel, Chapter1)
Exekias, also called Execias, was living during Athens time period between 550BC and 530BC. He was a most recognized painter who frequently worked with black-figure. Under the achievement of some outstanding potteries such as Achilles and Ajax Playing Dice versus Dionysus Crossing the Sea, he is known as a master of black-figure painting in the Greek era (Britannica, 2014).
Like many other women artists of her time who were banned from apprenticeship with successful artists, Gentileschi was the daughter of a painter. She was born in Rome on July 8, 1593, the daughter of Orazio and Prudentia Monotone Gentileschi. Her mother died when Artemesia was only twelve. Her father trained her as an artist and introduced her to some of the artists of Rome, including Michaelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, whose chiaroscuro style (contrast of light and shadow) greatly influenced Artemesia Gentileschi's work. Other than artistic training, she had little or no schooling. She did not learn to read or write until she was an adult. However, by the time she was seventeen, she had produced one of the works for ...
Rathnasambhava, the Transcendent Buddha of the South and Madonna Enthroned are very similar images that were produced by very different cultures. Both images were produced during the 13th Century. The image of Rathnasambhava, the Transcendent Buddha of the South was produced in Tibet during an interesting period of the country’s religious history. The branch of Tibetan Buddhism is led by a religious and sometimes political leader called the Dalai Lama. It was during the 13th Century during the reign of Kublai Khan, around the time of the production of this painting, that Tibet experienced the first incarnation of the Dalai Lama. One has to wonder if this painting is somehow related to that occurrence. According to one source, the reincarnation system for the Living Buddhas is the main point distinguishing Tibetan Buddhism from other forms of Buddhism.

Artemisia Gentileschi (Rome 1593 - Naples 1652/53) was a Roman painter, daughter of the painter Orazio Gentileschi and Prudenza Montone (who died when Artemisia was twelve). First of six children (all males), at a very early age was initiated to painting by her father, a follower of Caravaggio.
Artemisia was born on July 8 of 1652 in Naples, Italy. She has been credited as one of the most famous female artists of the Baroque period. Her father, Orazio Gentileschi, helped her develop her skills as he was an artist as well. In her early life, she lost her mother at the age of twelve years of age, which may have led to her style of artwork. Another possible contributing factor is that she was raped by one of her father’s colleagues named Agastino Tassi. She married a Florence painter named Pietro Antonio di Vicenzo Stiattesi, and moved to Florence with him. Together, they had one female child. She befriended many artists, thinkers, and writers during her time, which included Galileo the astronomer. She was a female artist in a male dominated art world of her time, and succeeded at standing out.
I believe that the Norman Rockwell painting induces his audience to become visible to themselves as white in a politically progressive way by displaying nostalgic concepts that his audience can identify with as they relate to the white boy more than the black man.
El Greco was born in an unknown city of Crete in the year of 1541. El Greco's real and full birth name is Doménikos Theotokópoulos. His nickname, El Greco, comes from where he was born, Crete. He signed all of his paintings with his nickname which translates to "The Greek". This was suspected to be given to him by his fellow citizens because of where he was born. El Greco spoke Spanish and Greek, which helped his art to be understood. Even though El Greco is ultimately one of the greatest and most influential artists of his time, he had no known formal training in art. El Greco studied under Titian and others like Tintoretto and Michelangelo who influenced his art along with his birthplace and the current post-byzantine era art styles (getty). It is possible that El Greco had a wife, Jeronima de las Cuevas, a woman who lived with him. While they were probably not a married couple, they did have a child together, Jorge Manvel, who later followed in his father's footsteps and became a painter.
While in Venice, he studied under the well-known painter Titian. From Titian, he learned the fundamentals of Renaissance art. Around 1576 he decided to move to Toledo, Spain where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. Here is where he painted View of Toledo, which is considered the first landscape in Spanish art. I think this ominous representation of the city of Toledo displays the power of nature. It is as the sky could open up at any moment and destroy the ghost like city below. It is suggested that El Greco might have painted this landscape as part of a propaganda campaign to encourage Philip II to reinstate the court in Toledo after he abandoned it in 1561 (Piker). Mannerism style stepped away from the traditional aspects of Renaissance art. “Mannerist art represents tension and angst, opposed to the peacefulness of Renaissance art” (Cowie). Some also say this painting is meant to show an apocalyptic vision. “This is a landscape of heavenly apocalyptic power: a conversation between heaven and earth next to the cathedral spire. The scene of the town takes place at the moment before a storm. The heavens are literally at war with the setting sun against the thunderstorm that is about to happen” (El Greco).
As a child growing up, I always knew I did not see colors the same way other kids did. It was not until I was older, and had an eye injury, that it was realized that I was color blind. When I would tell my peers that I was color blind I always got questions like, “What color is my shirt?” and “What color is the sky?’ These questions soon became annoying, and I stopped telling people I was color blind because I do see colors. I have problems distinguishing between the colors blue and purple, red and green, red and orange, green and brown, and so on. It is the hues that are a problem for me
A paradox is a statement containing conflicting idea and it contradicts itself. It defies reason and is the opposite. Have you ever wonder what it means to adapt? Adapt means to adjust to changes whether you want to or not. Believe it or not as human being we adapt to changes every day whether big or small and noticeable or not. Your brain and nervous system creates new pathways so you can survive from tragic events every day.

In this case, people of this nature tend to have eyes that reflect that mindset. However, Modigliani chose to portray him with shallow, mindless eyes. While his eyes do not show much depth, his offset gaze creates a sense of motion within the painting. The depth of the painting seems to be relatively shallow. The shadow that the chair casts on the wall is a very small one, leading me to believe that either a) the chair was close to the wall, or b) the light source was right at eye level, creating a shadow that cast almost directly behind the chair.
