DFW calls unconsciousness "the default setting, the rat race, the constant gnawing sense of having had, and lost, some infinite thing.". On the other hand, being conscious is described as being related to the ability of being aware of your surroundings, instead of just seeing yourself as the center of the universe. More specifically, he talks about being able to understand that everyone else sees themselves as their own center of their own universe.
