Discipline Name Institution Discipline Discipline is a skill used to impart knowledge or to teach. There is a controversy between disciplining and punishing children based on ways involved and limits used. Canadian Pediatric Society recommends taking an anticipatory approach to discipline (Nieman & Shea, 2004, para 4). Parents should be asking questions based on the techniques that can be used at home to teach children. Control is recommended for children because it assists in changing behaviors, it is both temperamentally and developmentally appropriate, it is a form of self-enhancing, and it is always given by an adult who has a direct bond with the child. Old-fashioned discipline assists children to organize themselves and internalize rules. The reaction of both children and caregivers on old fashioned discipline determines their temperaments and in this way, they learn more from each other. Socio-cultural milieu requires a flexibility model to study the child. Old-fashioned discipline should enable a caregiver to identify the reactions of a child when taught and in the process know whether the child is growing normally or abnormally. In the process of discipline, better relationships are made, and problem-solving adjustments are made. Old-fashioned discipline creates trust between the parent and the child. In the process of instilling discipline, there are activities that may be shameful like beating in front of people. The effects can be the shame, negative guilt, loss of trust, and an abandonment sense. When the caregiver instills discipline on the child continuously with an active mind, the adverse effects disappear, and the two develop greater trust knowing that training is necessary (Shugan, 2005). The child will then often avoid mistakes that would lead to incidences of being disciplined and this is because the child understands what will follow when they make mistakes. In the process of applying traditional discipline (that many people feel to be harsh), the parent influences the behaviors of the child involved. Children who undergo old fashioned discipline harbor a good form of self-control and act to be more self-sufficient.
They are also more responsible and have a strong feeling of self-confidence. Parents and caregivers who offer their little ones with old-fashioned discipline are better placed to develop the future of the children. Such children grow up knowing what wrong and repercussions of making mistakes are (Baron, 2005). The “harsh” aspect of old fashioned discipline is, therefore, important because it instills discipline in children and they grow up knowing the differences between good and bad. The modern discipline involves acting gently on children without harming them either physically, emotionally or psychologically. It is important to note that modern parenting is good because it gives the right direction to children but in a more conducive way. Parents remain with their children often because they want to guide them, even though their presence creates a form of dependence on children. In modern form of discipline, the parent tends to be the friend of the child instead of being a parent (Miller & Le Breton, 2005). It is the friendly way to handle children, but parents should create boundaries between them and the children. The forms of punishment here discipline the children but in a friendlier way and they still end up taught about life skills. Friendliness creates a good bond between the child and the parent and this maintains a good relationship between the two. Parents using the modern discipline method should not entertain the children because of gentleness but teach them patience, manners, and good behaviors. Modern disciplining captures the child’s attention and explains what is being done. Instead of rushing to actions, children are shown the right thing to do. In many cases, the modern parents prefer using this style because it educates the child and they end up knowing why some things are denied whereas others are given. In a case where a child would want to break glasses when playing, the parent can direct the child to another place like a playing room with toys. The child will then learn that toys are used for playing instead of glasses and understand that playing with toys is the disciplined behavior. Capturing attention is followed by a procedural explanation of the right way and in this modern form, children still harbor disciplinary requirements. The old fashioned discipline and the modern one are both good forms of instilling discipline in children.
Using both models find it important that parents and caregivers make the children understand why they are being disciplined. Before disciplining, the children should be given attention so that they know what is being done. There is much controversy over the correct disciplinary actions for kids. If parents discipline their kids too little, they could turn out to be spoiled and entitled, but if they discipline them too much, the kids could become rebellious and act out more often. Experts do not have a specific answer as to which strategy is most effective when teaching a child right from wrong. Although, new studies have shown that numerous parents are very unknowledgable about how quickly their child develops, which can lead to disciplinary problems. Spanking is the most effective form of discipline when a child knows doing something is wrong, but the child does it anyway. A child who is properly disciplined through spanking is being taught how to control her or his impulses and how to deal with all types of authorities in future environments. Each parent is different; they all have different ways in parenting and disciplining their children. One’s own parenting style is usually derived from the way one was raised or the society one lives in. Parenting styles include authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive, and it is very important to know which style one falls in because it can have an effect on how one’s child grows up to be and develops. Authoritative parenting would be the better parenting style because it is in the middle of the parenting styles; it is not at the extreme ends of the spectrum. It can be very beneficial to parents to understand that how one raises their children can give them a foundation for good development for years to come.

The punishment gets more intense when the child keeps breaking a rule. Some children don’t fully understand why they shouldn’t break a rule that’s why I feel that some continue to keep breaking a rule after told not to. In schools today some teachers keep a track of the children behaviors. Some have a chart which is red, yellow, and green every child starts out on the green part but when some children start to break rules the teacher will move a clip up to yellow which means they have a warring and if they keep breaking the rule they will be moved up to red which means they are getting a phone call home. When most children get up to yellow they start to act good so that they can me moved back down to green. I have seen this when I use to help teach a 2nd and 3rd grade class and this does really work for some kids. For children internal control they start to monitor their self’s and you as parents and teachers you hope that the children can and will develop their own behavior. For children’s guidance approach is when the teachers help the children to understand the rules, why to not break the rules and what will be the outcome if a rule is broken. It’s hard for some of the teachers or parents to teach their children to not break a rule because all the child will do is continue to keep breaking the rules and that puts stress on the teachers and parents. It is up to the parents to decide how they want to discipline their child. Major influences on how to discipline a child come from the media, friends, elders, and even books. Most parents choose their method of discipline based on how they were raised as a child. In most cases, it all depends on the ethnicity and culture you were born into. According to Child Rearing Practices in Different Cultures, some cultures believe that the father should be the sole disciplinarian, others believe that the role should be shared equally between the mother and father (Everydaylife.com).
Positive Discipline is a concept that can be extremely misinterpreted and when it is misused it can cause more harm than good. A common form of discipline for children is punishment and it is widely used because it is the believed to be very effective. “However, discipline comes from the Latin word discipulus or disciplini, which means a follower of truth, principle, or a venerated leader” (Nelson, pg. 15). Punishment in itself is not a positive method nor is it a positive form of leadership to follow or exert. Numerous people believe that children hate discipline, but actually they find security and comfort in the structure of discipline. Children actually want discipline, they want and need to know that there is someone who cares enough and loves them enough to intentionally help them grow as an individual. There are many ways to appropriately discipline children, including time-outs, physical discipline, and even monotonous work.
Discipline is intended to cease misbehavior in the classroom. Effective classroom management procedures contribute to an environment that enhance learning and reduce discipline problems (Edwards, 2004). The goal of discipline is to help students learn to control their own behavior. Effective teachers apply various disciplinary techniques that help in curtailing misbehavior and promote self-discipline in students (Charles, 1996). Effective discipline is emotionally disconnected from student actions (Henley, Ramsey and Algozzine, 1999). According to Dreikurs, discipline is a process in which students learn to impose reasonable limits on themselves (Charles, 1996).
