This paper aims to define mixed methods research and to answer the following question: if researchers are on the same team, yet have different philosophical approaches, can this be reconciled? In general, mixed research or mixed method was defined as “a synthesis that includes ideas from qualitative and quantitative research”(Johnson, Onwuegbuzie, & Turner, 2007). The position that the author will be taken in this paper regarding resolving the differences in the philosophical approaches between researchers working in the same team is by integration mixed method into the research methodology.
To support the author’s position regarding mixed method as the ideal approach to solve the philosophical conflict between researchers working in the same team, a discussion about the advantages and the appropriateness of the mixed method approach is important. First of all, mixed method serves as a bridge to present different philosophical positions. Creswell et al. mentioned that the mixed method provides an opportunity to bridge the conflict between different philosophical perspectives such as constructivism, pragmatism, postpositivism and transformative perspectives (2011). They stated that this would help in creating dialectal standpoints that help in advancing both objective and subjective knowledge. They illustrated the practical diverse approach of pragmatism where it could highlight the importance of the research question by focusing on the objective and subjective aspects of the research problem. Based on the preceding ontological and epistemological assumptions a researcher then makes methodological assumptions. Having decided on exactly what is to be studied the researcher then decides how the research can best be managed thus formulating a plan of action. Considerations include whether the research used should be primary or secondary. Whether one will test an existing hypothesis or whether one will construct a theory after having collated evidence. Finally one can draw conclusions as to which strategy to implement with the ultimate goal of producing the type of knowledge that is required. I did not find myself strongly sided with any of the four paradigms. I felt that findings from any of the paradigms could provide beneficial information in different areas of education research. Constructivist researchers focus on understanding the people and the world they are studying; transformative researchers focus their work on people facing social oppression; while pragmatic researchers use both quantitative and qualitative methods to research the questions they want answered.
