Mixed method methodology (MMM) has become an increasingly accepted approach of conducting social research (Bryman, 2012) in the last decade. This is as a result of today’s world becoming increasingly interdisciplinary, dynamic and complex, therefore a methods that will enhance the research world to provide a superior research for interdisciplinary world such as MMM should be appreciated (Johnson & Onwuegbuzie, 2004). Though MMM has been applauded as research methodology offering great promise for practicing researchers and trying to bridge the opposing debate between quantitative and qualitative divide. Even with all its positivity’s MMM is not without challenges. Different challenges and issues facing MMM have been identified by research scholars. Those challenges include its philosophical inconsistencies, …show more content…
There are several definitions of Mixed method research, a study by Johnson et al. (2007) found that mixed methods research has been defined in 19 different ways. Prominent among those definition includes that of Creswell and Clark (2007) defines Mixed method research as research in which data collection and analysis are to integrate the findings and draw influences using both qualitative and quantitative approaches or methods in a single study or inquiry. The emphasis on the definition is “integrate “, ascertaining that, many scholars believe that mixing or integration happens at different stages of the research process. Similarly, Tashakkori and Teddlie (2010), defines mixed methods research as a type of research design in which QUAL and QUAN ( qualitative and quantitative) approaches are used in research questions, methods, data collection and analysis procedures, or in inferences. Different Challenges facing MMM which will be discussed in the next
Although the mixed method gathering information is good, but I need to understand the procedure and technique needed to achieve the end results. Also, I will need to have a target schedule plan on how the research study can be achieve, which should be done in a more realistic pattern in concentrating on research topics that align to the study. Separate my findings from different ethnic groups about their perspective on intimate violent relationship, by avoiding generalize opinion of research participant, investigate and observe both first-hand and second-hand through the examination of external and internal
There are two types of research that can be conducted in research studies, these are qualitative and quantitative (Newman, 2011). Qualitative research is a process that uses detailed oriented methodology that tries to achieve a profound knowledge or understanding of specific incident and circumstance, wh...
The type of data collection for a qualitative research study depends on the research design. The qualitative design itself originates out of the disciplines and flow throughout the process of research (Creswell, 2014). Creswell (2014) recommends narrative, phenomenology, ethnography, case study, and grounded theory as common qualitative research methods. These were recommended because of they are popular across the social and health and science research studies. Hays and Woods (2011) asserted that selecting a research tradition congruent with one's research orientation and study purpose, and at the same time, infusing it in all phases of qualitative inquiry, is one of the key criterions for trustworthiness of the research results. Hays and Woods (2011) recommends six qualitative research traditions, including ground theory, phenomenology, consensual qualitative research, ethnography, narratology, and participative action research. Indeed, while there are additional qualitative research methods available, scholars have identified these six qualitative traditions consistently or identified them as emerging and common methods of qualitative research (Hays & Woods, 2011).
For everything that occurs, there will somehow be something that caused the action to happen. It is more of a cause and effect ideal or simple a reaction to an action. In terms of research academics, independent and dependent variables are concepts or attributes to certain things that occur such as drug use, crime, or domestic abuse. For example, stress or other personal problems may lead to someone to use drugs. Also, poverty may lead someone to commit crime. In addition, a power controlled individual may cause a partnership to suffer physical or verbal abuse.

1. Quantitative methods are mostly used through numerical data, which means it is countable and it comes from a data collection. So I personally think, the best topics to be studied would be, students not finishing their studies or the increasing number of minor 's crimes. On the other hand, qualitative methods could be used to formulate new research questions when a quantitative method research seems difficult to generate new hypotheses and ideas. The qualitative methods present facts and figures through observations and interviews. The topics I would be studied for qualitative methods are people 's experience with food and body image and also one of the most important one why people decide to take loans in order to pay their education.
This essay is going to critically discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using surveys and questionnaires as a method of Socio-Legal research. When conducting socio-legal research, a number of methods can be used to collect useful information.
Quiz 12 - Lisa Bregman, 7/6/15 A blended approach is necessary to meet all diverse disciplinary needs for all students in a safe, positive way. An integrated approach will allow for student success. In order for students to be successful academically, they must also be exposed to positive techniques regarding behavior in the classroom and in school.
Methodology is the systematic, theoretical analysis of the methods applied to a field of study. It comprises the theoretical analysis of the body of methods and principles associated with a branch of knowledge. The key focus in this chapter is summarizing and express the resolution of the methodology utilized in connection with the research. Firstly, the knowledge of research design will be provided which demonstrates the stimulation of the research. Secondly, there is the discussion the data collection and data resources. Finally, the last part of this chapter will show the theories involved in this thesis (The triple-bottom line and Carroll’s CSR pyramid).
Johnson and Christensen (2007) describe mixed research as the third and newest research methodology paradigm. Philosophically, mixed research takes an eclectic, pragmatic, and commonsense approach, suggesting that the researcher mix quantitative and qualitative in a way that works best for the given research question that is studied in a particular context. Mixed research uses both deductive and inductive methods, obtains both quantitative and qualitative data, attempts to corroborate and complement findings and takes a balanced approach to research. Researchers used the term mixed method to refer to all procedures collecting and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data in the context of a single study.
….both quantitative and qualitative research are important and useful. The goal of mixed methods research is not to replace either of these approaches but rather to draw from the strengths and minimize the weaknesses of both in single research studies and across studies.
Administering surveys with closed-ended questions (e.g., face-to face and telephone interviews, questionnaires etc.). (Claire, 2001)
Qualitative and quantitative researcher’s exhibited conflicting ways of approaching a research. Some researchers prefer qualitative over quantitative and vice-versa. Also, it is common for qualitative and quantitative to be used together in a research. But, both methods when carried out correctly provide good research. Plus, both methods have their own unique differences and characteristics. In this paper I will define three of these characteristics in a quantitative and qualitative research design and discuss and compare their differences. (Smith & Davis, 2010)
Another option available to a researcher is mixed methods which focuses on collecting, analyzing, and mixing both qualitative and quantitative data in a single study; also, it is based on the premise that the use of quantitative and qualitative combination provides a better understanding of the research problem than either approach alo...
The Importance and Appropriateness of Utilizing Different Methodologies for Research. Introduction The process of research entails the logical as well as systematic search for useful data and information with regard to a specific topic (Jha, 2008). It is also comprised of the investigation of the best, most cost effective and appropriate solutions to both social and scientific issues, following an objective and logical analysis. Jha, (2008) defines research as the search for knowledge and the discovery of the truth. During this process, the data can be gathered from a wide pool of sources among them interviews, books, nature among others. The data can then be analyzed with the appropriate data analysis tools, so as to report the findings
