When most people think about immigration to the United States, they think of the U.S. as being the “land of opportunity,” where they will be able to make all of their dreams come true. For some people, immigration made their lives richer and more fulfilled. This however, was not always the case. A place that is supposed to be a “Golden Land” (Marcus 116) did not always welcome people with open arms. Even after people became legal citizens of the United States, often times the natural born Americans did not treat the immigrants as equals but rather as outsiders who were beneath them in some way. In some situations, people’s lives were made worse by coming to the “land of opportunity.” Often times people were living no better than they were in their own countries not able to make ends meet, just to live in the United States. Virtually all immigrants during the 1900’s had the same dream, to become successful and provide for their families as citizens of the United States, but they soon found out that the life in their new country was not going to be easy.
Throughout all of the readings and letters, there seemed to be a common theme faced by all of the immigrants, and that was hardship. Immigrants alike, no matter their country of origin, faced these hardships. The main thing that all of the immigrants wanted was to be able to have a real life and to be able to provide a better life for their children so they could have successful futures. While reading “Letters from the Great Migration,” it seemed as though each individual in their own words expressed the same dilemmas. Most of the people in their letters were trying very hard to get out of the South and move to the North in order to find decent work and to provide for their families. It seemed like they would endure pretty much anything to secure a job in the North, particularly the man from Houston, Texas. He says that he wants to find a job in the North so he can go “where a man is a man,” (Marcus 134). This shows that people from the South feel like their lives could be fulfilled in a greater way in the North rather than in the South, where they currently reside. Particularly for the men, this quote seems to also suggest that the men in the South do not feel like real men, in the sense that they can’t find decent work in order to provide a good life for themselves or their families. It also appears t...

... such a wide variety of people “under one roof?” Although I am sure that it is still not easy to leave your family and come to a new land and start whole new life for yourself, I would have to imagine that it is a lot easier today based on the fact that people are now more educated and seem to be more accepting of change and diversity. Colleges for examples, jump at the opportunity to accept a student who is not 100% U.S. born. There are also many immigrants who are at the top of their fields. One great example is Arnold Schwarzenegger. Not only is he an accomplished actor in the United States, but he now holds office as Governor of the state of California, and he is not a natural born U.S. citizen.
Immigration is a very important part of the history of the United States and continues to be today. Immigrants during the 1900’s had many hardships to face and sometimes the “golden land” was not so golden. Many immigrants had very high hopes about what their lives could have been like here in the U.S., and unfortunately only very few got to experience that great life. Although each of the readings had their differences, the theme of hardship seemed to prevail throughout.
America is a land filled with immigrants coming from different corners of the worlds, all in hopes of finding a better life in the country. However, No one had an easy transition from his or her home country to this foreign land. Not every race thrived the same way—some were luckier than others, while some have faced enormous obstacles in settling down and being part of the American society. Many people have suffered
Developers at Apple have combined the convenience of digital watches with cellphone technology to create a watch that user cannot not only keep time with but also makes phones calls, set calendar reminders, check the weather, and track their activity level.
Immigrants traveled hundreds of miles from their homes, only with what possessions they could carry, in order to obtain the rights and chase the promise that America had to offer. Mary Antin illustrates in The Promised Land how if given the chance, immigrants will represent the promises and virtues of American society. Antin shows that public education, freedom from religious persecution, and freedom of expression as a citizen are aspects of life Americans may take for granted but immigrants certainly do not.
The Apple Watch is already a great product in its own right, but it still needs a number of improvements to become a more prominent and a better product. Regardless, it's still a first-generation device and Apple can use the mistakes it committed - along with the users' complaints - to introduce a better smartwatch next

In his book “American Passage: The History of Ellis Island”, Vincent J. Cannato expressed the course that the late 1800s to 1900s immigrants went through. The main focus of Cannato’s book was the many changes in the immigration policy, and how it shaped the United States. Before Ellis Island opened, the restriction of immigrants was weak. Many Americans had their own beliefs on how immigration should be managed, however, restrictions towards immigration was not enforced until the early 1900s. When the immigration policy was finally imposed, the treatment of immigrants became harsh and unsympathetic. Vincent J. Cannato’s book “American Passage: The History of Ellis Island” explains the changes of procedures and laws, the attitudes of Americans,
Hester Prynne is a tragic hero because of her perseverance and determination in her journey with Pearl. Even though she is given the opportunity to leave Boston and remove the scarlet letter that she wears on her clothes, she chooses to stay and be with the father of her child. Her choice to stay with Dimmesdale made her life much worse than it needed to be. The people who she knew started to hate her. Even the homeless people whom she made clothes for ridiculed her for her unholy acts. Even though she is ridiculed and shunned by society, she still remains positive towards the people and does only good. When told to tell the name of the father she answers, "And my child must seek a heavenly father; she shall never know an earthly one." Hester tries does her best to raise Pearl the right way. By saying that her father will seek God, she tells the people that Pearl will be religious and will never know the identity of her biological father. The citizens of Boston are terrible to Hester because of her act. Although she has the option to tell everyone who Pearl's father is to stop her suffering, she remains silent to protect the identity of Dimmesdale. She endures her punishment alone so that Dimmesdale's reputation is not tarnished with the title of "adulterer." Hester protects Dimmesdale's image and future by not telling anyone that he is the father. Hester endures punishment for both parties involved with the crime.
With the recent popularity and introduction of various products such as the Fitbit, Garmin’s Vivoactive, and Android’s smart watches, Apple releasing the Apple Watches definitely kept up with the smart watch trend. The Watch’s massive presence in the market has allowed it to not only match many of the qualities of other watches, but in a way surpass them with the apps, and marketing programs it has implemented into the design and functionality of the Watch.
The idea of a wearing a watch for your wearable technology is I think the best spot on your body for one. There are so many different types of technological watches which do serve as a watch sometimes, but other times they have completely different uses. The Fitbit for instance, kind of stole Nike’s Nike+ idea of a shoe sensor connected to their Ipod, however like I said before a watch or wristband type technology is the most popular now a days for the simplicity of using it like a normal watch.
One interesting and strange way to understand the progression of wearable computing is to look at the evolution of the timepiece:
Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1899. He was a writer who started his career with a newspaper office in Kansas City when he was seventeen. When the United States got involved in the First World War, Hemingway joined with a volunteer ambulance unit in the Italian army. During his service, he was wounded, and was decorated by the Italian Government. Upon his return to the United States, he was employed by Canadian and American newspapers as a reporter, and sent back to Europe to cover the Greek Revolution. In the 1920’s, Hemingway was a member of expatriate Americans in Paris. In one writing of Hemingway, it reads, “In the nearly sixty two years of his life that followed he forged a literary reputation unsurpassed in the twentieth century” (LostGeneration). During this time, he wrote some of his most important and successful works of literature. Ernest Hemingway is one of the most influential writers of his time. One biography of him said, “His novels and short fictions have left an indelible mark on the literary production of the United States and the world” (TheEuropeanGraduateSchool).
Before you pay money for your watch you really need to think about the reason why you are buying the watch. Obviously a construction worker will need a different kind of watch than the businessman who is looking for a watch to wear when he is attending business lunches.
Earnest Hemingway's works began appearing in the mid 1920's. He appeared in the time of Gertrude Stein, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and others of the sort (Salter). Having befriended them, he later "broke with almost all his literary friends" (Salter). Hemingway's writing was so highly acclaimed that he was considered the voice of his generation. In relation to his works, what should be noted of his biographical background is a short list of rather important events. Hemingway's whole life, he seemed to be constantly depressed. His father was "a highly principled doctor", and both his parents were very "religious and strict" in his upbringing (Salter). He traveled to Europe and in 1918 where “Hemingway volunteered as a Red Cross ambulance driver to do service on the front lines of World war I” (Akers). When he assisted in the war in Italy, he had been severely injured aiding an injured man (Akers).According to Akers his experiences deeply impacted him and his work greatly. Another fact to keep in mind is his unsuccessful attempts at maintaining love, seen through his various marriages and divorces. “When he married Hadley Richardson in 1921 and the couple move...
