My current dietary practices are somewhat lacking when it comes to eating a balanced diet. Basically, my approach to choosing what to eat is to eat whatever looks good without a thought of its nutritional value. If I do think of the nutritional value of food I eat, I simply ignore such a rational thought and eat whatever I want anyway. I do reasonably well at drinking water. Now, this is not to say I never eat healthy meals but my efforts to in such a way have been lacking as of late. What I ate during this study was enough to get me through my days but I also did not exercise my normal amount any of the days because I was sick. First, what I mean by routine is I find something I like then I simply eat that over and over and that thing is not always the healthiest item. For instance, I believe I have eaten a baked potato every time they have been served in the last week or so. While this is not a particularly bad option on its own, a potato and lots of butter is not a particularly good choice. When it comes to eating vegetables, my observation was puzzling. I quite enjoy vegetables however the options for vegetables in the dining hall never appeal to me and thus I choose not to eat them. The cooked vegetables tend to be overcooked and raw vegetables are unappealing. I have observed some students steaming their vegetables in the microwave which is a clever and useful idea I should probably implement more. Lastly, during the days of this observation I was particularly bad spacing out my nutrients throughout my day. I typically try to do this but I usually am unsuccessful. Nutritionism and Today’s Diet Nutritionism is the ideology that the nutritional value of a food is the sum of all its individual nutrients, vitamins, and other components. In the book, “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan, he critiques scientists and government recommendations about their nutritional advice. Pollan presents a strong case pointing out the many flaws and problems that have risen over the years of following scientific studies and government related warnings on the proper amount of nutrients needed for a healthy diet. This is because dietary assessments could be affected by a number of factors such as motivation to complete assessments and reporting bias associated with unstructured eating patterns, concerns with body image and weight status (Livingstone MB et. al, 2009). Besides these, the study design, outcomes of interest , and available resources need to be taken into consideration when selecting an appropriate dietary assessment tool for a particular study (Jyh Eiin Wong et. al, 2012).
Proper nutrition is important in maintaining a long and healthy life. Most Americans are rushed due to their busy work schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets properly. Like me, most Americans are unaware of the importance of eating a healthy diet and consume too many foods without the proper nutrients. Throughout my life I have been fortunate. I have not had any major health problems, and have been able to consume most foods without having to worry about gaining weight. These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously imagined.
Nutritionism is an ideology that believes that the nutrients in foods are the key to understanding them. Nutritionism believers are so focused on the nutrients that food contains that they forget about all other aspects of food. The problem is that consumers rely on packaging to tell them what nutrients a food provides, since nutrients cannot be obviously seen, and they rely on science to tell us what nutrients are good and which are “evil”.

I would have predicted that I was eating well enough to provide all my essential nutrient needs. However, I was very mistaken. I think this was my biggest shock of the semester. One of the reason’s why I felt my nutrition needed to changes is because nutrition is a huge part of a healthy lifestyle, the way that we eat and what foods we consume can have a huge impact on our everyday lives. Nutrition plays a huge role in multiple facets of a person’s life energy, health, skin, weight, confidence, and more making having a good control on your eating habits extremely important. How we eat over the years and what foods we routinely choose to eat can eventually have a lasting effect on use and what we consider to be most appealing and appetizing at any given moment. Having these craving and routine habits makes eating, diet, and nutrition both a behavior and a lifestyle choice that can be changed over time with help from the theories learned in this class.
Mindfulness unlocks your senses. It is the practice of being fully aware of what is happening within and around you in the moment. This is not easy to do! Practicing mindfulness helps people make better choices in regards to what and how they eat. There is a lot to learn here, but taking simple steps like noticing the smells, temperatures, textures and tastes of the foods in your meal is a good place to start. It essentially reshapes your relationship with food and makes eating more enjoyable because you learn your reactions to food preferences, habits and tastes.

While I was tracking my eating for these three days, I began to learn about the benefits of the food that I am eating and the nourishment that they provide for my body. I had never realized how big of a role that the food that I eat plays in my everyday life. Eating has never been something that I really think about it is just something that I do.
