Playing the Piano

There I was just sitting there at ten years old, playing the same note over and over; just trying to find the melody. But then it hit me, why don’t I just look up and down the scales and find the notes by just going Do Re Mi. A new door opened up and my mind exploded into a new color, the color of music. I was learning faster and playing more how I could just find the notes so easily. By the first two weeks I was playing fur elise. Finally! I found a new passion. But there are rules to playing the piano, these are the unwritten ones.

Precept #1

If you don’t know your placements then your fingers will keep on crossing over one another. Let’s say you’re playing a full scale from middle C to high C. When you are playing notes have your thumb as 1 and going from left to right 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. C-1, D-2 E-3 F-1 G-2 A-3 B-4 C-5. Why? Because you are focusing on one thing rather than two and building up muscle memory. Writing in notes is a great shortcut to learning music and building up the skills to learning music. If you cannot sight read music as well as others then writing in note names and scales can greatly improve your skills as a musician.

PRECEPT #5
Remember to always write in your music whether it would be notes, finger numbers, or even if there’s an octave jump. You should always write in your music because even if it looks stupid, the little notes that you can make while looking at your music have a huge impact on how you play. Just looking up for a brief second at your music and seeing the note name right above it just lets you play so much easier. I would also suggest getting pieces of tape and writing the note names on them then sticking them onto the white piano keys.

Precept #6
Posture is key in playing piano, if you don’t have a good posture then forget on even playing because chances are you’re going to play the wrong note. Usually good posture indicates that your back is straight, wrists are not resting on the keys. If you are resting your wrist then your hands are constricted by the wrists and will possibly not play the right
