Life can sometimes best be described as a roller coaster. It has its highs and its lows, but no matter how low someone is everyone has that one place to forget about life’s problems. This place is the Great Neck ice rink for me. Hockey was introduced to me as a kid by a neighborhood friend. I was around 8 years old when I first picked up a hockey stick. Although it would be another month until I was able to use a lefty hockey stick, I knew that this sport would be an essential role in my life. My friend Brian got me into hockey, but as a lefty, he did not have any lefty hockey sticks. This did not draw me away from the sport. It made me take on this challenge to be talented at this sport. My anger or anxiety would cease to exist the second I walked onto the ice. All of my senses would dull down and I would just skate. This was the home rink for my travel ice hockey team, The Great Neck Bruins. Hockey was something I could always rely on to blow off some steam and this organization helped make the rink feel like home. Having the puck on the blade of my hockey stick made me feel in control of everything. The contact part of the sport also made this place a little more special. Many athletes would agree that contact sports is a healthy way to blow off steam. I always used gamedays to blow off some steam and throwing those couple extra body checks per game drew attention. It started to create scoring chances for my team, which resulted in more points and ice time. This made me feel as if life was so simple. It was as if I forgot all my problems.
