Why Hockey Is Not a Dangerous Sport
People can brake a bone walking down the street, hockey is not any different. In youth
leagues, contact in Ice Hockey is typically forbidden on the ice. Contact hockey is considered the
most dangerous version of the sport. Professional leagues such as the NHL play contact hockey.
This allows the players to physically check each other and use their bodies for defensive and
offensive play. However, the players may not involve their stick or take blows at another player's
face. Playing contact hockey can result in bruises, broken bones and concussions, which makes it
a very dangerous part of the sport.

If people can get hurt in anything those people do, why is hockey so different? Players
hardly get hurt in hockey. People can get get hurt using paper, so are those people going to keep
kids away from paper. If people are going to keep kids away from anything dangerous, kids
wouldn’t do anything at all. People can get hurt doing anything, so why keep people away from
hockey.
People think hockey is dangerous because, people have gotten paralyzed and will never
walk again. If people brake their arm in the sport that those people write with those people can’t
participate in school. If people have a disease and get checked those people could die. There

To understand this phenomenon we must go back to March 13, 1955. On this date, the Montreal Canadians were playing a game in Boston against the Bruins. One of the opposing players, Hal Laycoe, high-sticked Maurice Richard, injuring him to the point of requiring eight stitches on his scalp. Richard retaliated by smashing his own stick over Laycoe's head and shoulders and slashed him with another player's stick until it splintered. Becoming annoyed with the official's interference in the fight, Richard then turned and punched him. Since hitting an official was the least honorable thing to do, Richard was expelled from the game (2000).

Most young hockey players have the dream of making it to the National Hockey League (NHL). Because of this incentive to keep striving towards their ultimate goal in their hockey career, they idolize the players in the NHL. Therefore, youth players may obtain certain habits from the elite, whether those habits are good or bad. With the thought of losing a game, it is no wonder why players have the urge to play rough and potentially hurt the opposing team in order to be victorious. Although body checking is believed to be a useful tool in the winning of hockey games, it can be the cause that leads to injury among players. Because of the rougher play, lasting brain injuries are becoming a worry and too many players are exposed to the lasting effects of the head injury. The injuries that athletes get are mainly from not exercising correctly, not doing the proper stretches, and by not keeping enough fluids in the body. The most common injuries are ankle twist, pulled muscles, concussions, broken bones, and fractures. The easiest way to prevent these type of injuries from happening is to make sure you have the proper training and stretching. Poor training methods, inadequate warm-up, and lack of conditioning are a few of the causes of sports injuries. “Injuries can be caused by a combination of those things without necessarily being the only reasons,” (Apostolos Theophilou). Injuries can also be caused by not using the proper technique in the sport, or by doing the proper stretching techniques. Most athletes hardly ever stretch before a game or event. Stretching is the main reason why athletes are injured so often. Whenever you don’t stretch, the muscles in the body are very tight and can be pulled easily or may cause very painful cramping.
