Imagine a world where you couldn 't understand when a friend was feeling sad or when a co-worker was angry. The ability to express and control our own emotions is important, but so is our ability to understand, interpret, and respond to the emotions of others. Emotional intelligence (EQ) covers 4 different branches, which are, perceiving emotion or emotional perception which is registering and breaking down feelings and emotions. The initial, most basic, area has to do with the nonverbal reception and expression of emotion. Facial expressions such as happiness, sadness, anger, and fear, were recognizable in human beings. The capacity to accurately perceive emotions in the face or voice of others provides a crucial starting point for more advanced understanding of emotions. Healthy emotional intelligence is important because people end up being less stressed and have an acceptance of who they are as themselves. It helps to build strong relationships, make good decisions and deal with difficult situations (Pisanos, 2011). There are 3 models which emotional intelligence and be categorized into. They are the ability model, trait EI model and the mixed model. The mixed model is the model that mixes together EI qualities with other personality traits unrelated to either emotion or intelligence. They are the mixed qualities that such models target. Emotional Intelligence, also known as ‘EI’, is defined as the ability to recognize, authoritize and evaluate emotions. The ability to control and express our own emotions is very important but so is our ability to understand, interpret and respond to the emotions of others. To be emotionally intelligent one must be able to perceive emotions, reason with emotions, understand emotions and manage emotions.
Emotional intelligence is the subset of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions. (Ledlow & Coppola,
(Yoder-Wise, 2015, p. 7). Emotional intelligence involves managing the emotions of others while owning personal emotions. According to Skholer, “Researchers define emotional intelligence (EI) as the ability to recognize/monitor one’s own and other people’s emotions, to differentiate between different feelings, and to use emotional information to guide thinking, behavior, and performance.” (Skholer & Tziner, 2017).
Emotions are frequent companions in our lives. They come and go, and constantly change like the weather. They generate powerful chemicals that create positive and negative feelings, which have a powerful effect on leadership. Some emotions can either facilitate leadership, while others can detract from successful leadership. This course, Emotionally Intelligent Leadership, has truly opened my eyes to the affects that emotions have on being an effective leader. Peter Salovey and John Mayer defined emotional intelligence as “the ability to monitor one’s own and other’s feelings and emotions to use the information to guide one’s thinking and actions” (p. 5). This definition in itself states that emotions, whether it be ones own emotions or those of others, is the underlying factor that directs the actions of a leader. Therefore, throughout the progression (advancement) of this course, I have learned the importance of the development of emotional intelligence for being an effective leader, and because of this I plan on developing the capacities that contribute to being an emotionally intelligent leader for my own success, now and in the future.
The scope of emotional intelligence includes the verbal and nonverbal appraisal and expression of emotion, the regulation of emotion in the self and others, and the utilization of emotional content in problem solving. (pp. 433)
In looking at emotional intelligence, this is not a new concept. It can be traced back to Edward Thorndike study of social intelligence (Cartwright & Pappas, 2008). This type of intelligence is defined in “the ability to understand and manage people” along with taking this ability and applying it to oneself (Cartwright & Pappas, 2008, p. 152). The concept of emotions of how one deals with these internally and externally with others was discovered but it was difficult to measure (Bradberry & Su, 2006).
Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify, use, and understand emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, efficiently communicate, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and to defuse conflict. By harnessing emotional intelligence, we can modify our own behavior and our interaction with other people. By utilizing high emotional intelligence, we are able to recognize our won emotional state and the emotional states of others, and engage with others in a way that draws them nearer to you (Cherry, 2015).
For moreover, Daniel Goleman (2004) explained that emotional intelligence plays an integral role in defining character and determining both our individual and group densities. It involves the ability in monitoring one’s own and others emotion, to discriminate among them, and to use the information to guide one’s thinking and action. It means to embrace the power of emotion intelligently, it involves abilities that may be categorized, into five (5) domains: (1) self-awareness, (2) emotional maturity, (3) self-motivation, (4) emphatic understanding, and (5) quality communication.

This concept was firstly developed by two American university professors, John Mayer and Peter Salovey (1990) and they concluded that, people with high emotional quotient are supposed to learn more quickly due to their abilities. Another psycologist named Daniel Goleman (1995) extended the theory and also made it well-known. In his articles and books, he argued that people with high emotional quotient do better than those with low emotional quotient. In this essay, it will be argued that high emotional intelligence can influence work performance positively to a relatively high extent.
