Effective leadership begins by knowing oneself, by enhancing strengths and improving upon weaknesses. I have learned that a democratic leadership style is one that accomplishes decision making through teamwork and collaboration while encouraging participation and fostering creativity. Through reflection on my past experiences, and leadership opportunities I have uncovered my leadership abilities as a democratic leader. Over time I have developed a democratic leadership style by enhancing my compassion for others and improving upon my ability to promote group decision -making. I have developed the democratic leadership style by leading sports teams, overseeing student committees and by innovating a new tool for better patient outcomes. My focus …show more content…
In my adolescence I was placed in a team based setting by playing on various sports teams. Working through problems and striving towards a common goal were two skills I acquired through my athletics. I was able to work as a team on and off the field because a democratic leadership style utilizes an open and collaborative approach when decision-making by establishing team cohesion and creativity” (Awan & Mahmood, 2010). In my time on sports teams I have had first hand experience collaborating and decision making as a group. When I had the opportunity to become a team captain, I built upon my previous experiences in democratic leadership to lead as a democratic captain. I began to understand that “democratic leaders will make the final decision, but still invites other members of the team to contribute the decision making process” (Bhatti, Maitlo, Shaikh, Hashmi & Shaikh, 2012, p.193). When there was a choice to be made, all members were asked for input and I consciously made a decision on jerseys, menu or warm-up options that would agree with the majority of my teammates. Being a leader among my peers, I wanted to make peace, do what needed to be done for the greater good and to avoid conflict when possible. As Choi (2007) stated “democratic leadership is associated with higher morale” (p. 246). By choosing the option that every team member wanted, …show more content…
My role on the committee consisted of supervising committee members as we completed a guide for incoming first year nursing students. When choosing a theme for the guide, I opened up the floor for other members to contribute their ideas. In the end, the theme was voted on and I decided that the majority voted option was published. I did this so that my fellow “Team members will feel in control of their destiny…[and] are motivated to work hard” (Bhatti, Maitlo, Shaikh, Hashmi & Shaikh, 2012, p. 193). I also requested all members of the committee to create a cover for the guide, which stimulated individual creativity and participation in the activity. As Awan & Mahmood (2010) states “A good democratic leader always promotes participation” (p. 256). By encouraging everyone to create a cover, it allowed for maximum participation in the committee. Leading the handbook committee on the Nursing Orientation Committee highlighted my democratic leadership style, as my decision-making was ground in group participation and
Leadership is a not only a necessary quality to have but I wish to display this quality in my future career as a Physician Assistant. Being a leader is required in order to succeed in the rural primary care field. Incorporating this leadership quality in my career as a Physician Assistant is important to me because I have displayed this quality through the classroom, athletics, volunteer work, etc and I wish to continue to displa...

...team dynamics “depends largely on how willing team leaders are to share authority, responsibility, information, and resources”(p.119). Hence, it is important that managers are actively involved in the development of teams, address conflicts immediately, and allow team members to participate in the planning, decision making, and problem solving in regards to team goals.
On the path to an advanced nursing role, I have learned about the qualities that make exceptional advanced nursing role nurses. In my present Registered Nurse role I have found that I cherish values important to the success of my envisioned career. I have experienced what lack of effective leadership can entail for a nursing unit. During the progression of this class I have found that one of the best things I am doing as an RN is using persuasion as a form of starting change. In the class we learned that historically nurses have been in positions to advocate for change, however they have not been as influential as previously believed (Sullivan, 2004). At the core of effective leadership lies influence (Sullivan, 2004). According to Mintzer (2005), influencing people requires some degree of persuasion. In addition to my ability to persuade I have learned how to ...
Captains of sports teams are given the stereotype that they are the most athletic player on the team, scoring the most goals and handling the ball best. In truth, captains have a lot of work they have to do that doesn’t even involve playing the sport. Captains are the most looked at player of the game; other players, younger kids and coaches look to them to set examples. They have to set examples in every aspect of the game; athleticism might be part of their job but it is not limited to it. The captain of any sports team must set the leadership standard for commitment, confidence, intelligence, and attitude.
You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink is a proverb I have heard since I was young. Leadership is the skill of influencing people to accomplish goals (Huber, 2014). In today’s world with policy and technological changes the leaders must use their leadership skills to not only get the horse to the water, have him drink, but also do it with a smile an invite others to join him. Leaders use a variety of styles to accomplish their goals. I will discuss the leadership style that I utilize most often, how my style relates to leadership theories and the work type environment it is most useful in.
The role of leadership has become increasing valuable for organizations to be successful. According to Huber (2014), Leadership can best be defined as method utilized to ensure that an objective is completed. There are many different types of leaderships that can be found within each organization. In this paper I will highlight an example of a specific leadership style that we come across in healthcare settings. I will review my leadership self-assessment results and discuss the impact of leadership on staff and groups.

Leadership is an important aspect of all businesses, especially the health care industry, and without good leadership, patient care and outcomes may be affected. Effective leaders and managers use various styles and theories and adapt these with consideration to the characteristics of their workers and of the environment. A self-assessment was done that asked a series of questions that generated a picture of the quality and what style of leader that I am. This picture will be compared to existing leadership and management theories along with a few examples. Also, my leadership style will show the actions and behaviors required for effectively leading an ideal workforce and workplace environment. There are many surveys that help one to
Leaders can have a powerful impact on the futures of many, and the way in which one approaches leadership is paramount to the type of impact one will have. Continual growth in the areas of knowledge I have and seek to acquire, as well as recognizing my leadership style and utilizing my personal strengths to the fullest, is vital to the successful implementation of my personal philosophy of leadership.
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
Growing up I have always taken on leadership roles. I was always the organizers of group projects and was team captain of my club and high school soccer team for several years. This past experience with leadership roles has lead to me developing several of valuable traits associated with leadership. For example, I have strong communication and problem solving skills, which have helped me in my past leadership positions and will continue to be an asset in the future. Although I have had experience in leadership roles in the past, I learned through this reading that there is room for a considerable amount of growth. One thing that was a valuable lesson for me was that leaders must be followed as well as follow others at times. I have always took control of situations and tried to lead others, but now I realize that sometimes even leaders need to take a back seat and let their followers take some control. I will employ this in the future in the clinical setting to ensure that all of my subordinates or colleagues feel they have control and power over the decisions being made. This is definitely an area I intend to grow in and utilize in the future to enhance my leadership abilities. In addition, another lesson that I will put into practice in the future is building meaningful relationships with my colleagues. As a
Through this I have become a democratic leader. I often use my charismatic leadership qualities to get things going. We are often surrounded by uncertainty in our daily lives, whether it is personal or professional. It is important to understand that a leader has to be comfortable dealing with uncertainty and change. I tend to grow in my leadership capacity by reading leadership books and attending seminars. Like Mark Miller said “your capacity to grow determines your capacity to
Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power. Based on the definition of leadership, anyone can be considered a leader as long as they have the ability to influence people to achieve a particular result or goal which benefits the organization or group as a whole. Individuals with a secure sense of self and understanding, acceptance of diversity within an organization tend to be the strongest leaders that not only make others want to follow, but they also encourage other leaders to gravitate to their
