Roles Synthesis: Advanced Practice Role Roles Synthesis: Advanced Practice Role In recent years, health care has experienced an endless struggle between patient care and economic viability. Advanced practice nurses play a vital role in successfully achieving and carrying out hospital patient care missions (Cathcart, Greenspan, & Quin, 2010). Additionally, advanced practice nurse roles are sometimes poorly defined making responsibilities unclear with unrealistic expectations (Spence Laschinger, Wong, Grau, Read, & Pineau Stam, 2011). Undoubtedly, advanced practice nurses are quickly becoming more educated, vision driven, and influential in response to the advanced nursing practice demands of current healthcare demands. In this paper I use the Appreciative Inquiry model to explore my future as a nurse in an advanced practice role. Discovering On the path to an advanced nursing role, I have learned about the qualities that make exceptional advanced nursing role nurses. In my present Registered Nurse role I have found that I cherish values important to the success of my envisioned career. I have experienced what lack of effective leadership can entail for a nursing unit. During the progression of this class I have found that one of the best things I am doing as an RN is using persuasion as a form of starting change. In the class we learned that historically nurses have been in positions to advocate for change, however they have not been as influential as previously believed (Sullivan, 2004). At the core of effective leadership lies influence (Sullivan, 2004). According to Mintzer (2005), influencing people requires some degree of persuasion. Transitioning from academic nursing student to Registered Nurse/New Graduate Nurse (NGN) within the healthcare environment is a challenging task for many NGNs. The authors in this article aimed to discover nurse manager leadership styles and their outcomes. Nurses from hospitals in the Northeastern part of the United States were asked questions. The data was collected in a locked room, alone, so no one would influence the answers of someone else. The results were put into a software program and displayed for analysis. Results showed when choosing a nurse for a managerial leadership role, one should choose someone if they have the basic components of transformational leadership, not transactional leadership. The authors show that transformational leadership had revealed positive patient outcomes, retention, and satisfaction in the nursing staff. Those nurse leaders who have qualities of transformational leadership are encouraged to build on those skills constantly.

The purpose of this paper is to describe how I visualize my future role as a mastered prepared nurse professional. The Association of American Medical Colleges estimates that by 2015 the nation will face a shortage of 62,100 physicians, 33,100 primary care practitioners and 29,000 other specialist. The nursing shortage evaporated during the recession, because many nurses returned to the workforce, but nurse practitioners remain a scarce resource in many areas (Expanding the Role of ANP Risk and reward). American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), a supporter of transforming health care to meet the challenges of an aging population and a shortage of primary care providers, agrees that advance practice registered nurses (APRNs), could provide seamless, accessible, affordable, and equitable quality care if they are utilized to the full extent of their education and training (AARP). In 2010, the Institute of Medicine published The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, a report which offered an intensive examination of what the nursing profession is now and should become. It states that nursing is at the heart of patient care and is therefore crucial to changing the way health care is delivered so that patients receive care at a cost they can afford. Nurses are a linchpin for health reform and will be vital to implementing systemic changes in the delivery of care (AARP).
Our course, Transition to Professional Nursing, is barely two weeks old and already I am being enlightened and challenged to expand my experience of nursing. I will attempt to explain my personal journey and experience thus far including how and why I got here, my beliefs about nursing and related values, and my visions for the future.
Leadership is defined by Northouse (2013) as a transactional experience between persons whereby one individual influences a group of individuals who have a mutual goal. Leaders may hold authority attributed to them by the group, substantiated by how they are regarded, whether or not they have positional authority. In contrast to management, where the goal is to provide order through control, leadership is concerned with producing change through transformation and practical adjustments (Northouse, 2013). Because of the nature of nursing, its obligation to promoting health and healing of people, nursing leadership concentrates change efforts based on human needs and concurrently ponders the needs of administrations largely because they understand the interrelatedness of the two influences.
The transition from student to a qualified nurse can be a stressful and overwhelming ex-perience for many newly qualified nurses. This opinion is widely upheld throughout the literature with Higgins et al (2010) maintaining that many of the problems experienced are due to lack of support during this initial transition and a period of preceptorship would be invaluable.
As you can see registered nurses are an important part of the health care system today. Risking their health and well-being for that of other people. Just remember how much they’ve helped you over time, whether it be curing a simple illness or mending a broken bone. Next time you see a nurse why not thank them for everything they have done. After doing research on this career I have decided that I am still interested and would like to pursue a career in this field.
I incorporate Erickson’s Modeling and Role-Modeling Theory in my daily nursing practice. The most recent advances in health care would not be possible without nurses, who strive to make continual improvements and advancements in health care. By successfully completing my journey of becoming a nurse practitioner, I am working toward better opportunities and advancements in health care. I plan to use the advancements and new developments that I learn during my nurse practitioner journey to give back to my community.

Working together, these many diverse parties can help ensure that the health care system provides seamless, affordable, quality care that is accessible to all and leads to improved health outcomes. Also, the Nurse leader provides the link between management and the frontline staff who personally interact with the public and patients. They are the interface between management and care delivery, and can only be effective if they have the support, time, authority, and respect necessary to competently and visibly lead their teams on the delivery of high-quality care. (Dawes, M., Davies, P., T., 2006).
