There are numerous ways of defining love and anything associated with the word. I have yet to understand what love is and believe that I never will. Is it an emotion, a feeling, or is it both? These are the kind of questions that I am sure many people out there have and constantly get a different answer. Based on the discussion in class about love and interpersonal attraction, my understanding of love it that it is something we as humans need and crave in order to get by in life. There was an example made in class about how one is already comfortable with a family member but when put into a setting with others we do not know there is a sense of awkwardness. Why is it that we are not able to act the same way with someone we have known for let’s say a few days versus someone we’ve known a lot longer. It is this that makes me believe that love is a mental thing and not really existent. I can easily tell someone I 've just met that I love them and think nothing of it. I may not feel that way towards that person but maybe there was something that was done at the given moment that triggered me to say it. Just like there are times where I can tell someone that I hate them but don’t actually mean
Love is an intense feeling of deep attraction. The gist of all this is that we plunge in love depending on how our brain operates in that second, if the person meets our needs, if you have sex with them it’s possible to fall in love, and if they came into your life and brightened it while you were going through a state of depression or stress.
Love is a feeling that is not known until it is shown. I believe that love is the desire that everyone has whether they know it or not. Taking it in the context of being between two people, it is also a verb. And an action is a choice. Physical feelings are just feelings that go no deeper than the outer layer of one’s true beauty. But the attraction of the mind, heart, spirit is what I would say true love is. And when one chooses to love another unconditionally, without judgment, and regardless of what’s in it for themselves, that’s when one realizes that real love does exist.
Love is having compassion for others, sharing feelings and your life with another person, as well as, having faith in others and forgiving those we love for the any errs that they may make. Most of all, we must be committed to those we love. Of course, this is only my opinion. No matter how long I try to explain what love is ultimately it is up to you, the reader, to define what love is to you. So let me leave you now with the words of the great Humanist Erich Fromm, "Can anything be learned about the art of love, except by practicing it?"
