Love Has Many Definitions

What is love? Webster defines love as “a strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties (2): attraction based on sexual desire: affection and tenderness felt by lovers (3): affection based on admiration, benevolence, or common interests .” Love comes in many forms. Unconditional love, the love of a mother for her child, romantic love, the love for your partner and passion or lust, a more sexual emotion towards a person. Love, although clearly defined gets interpreted by each person differently, it plays on human emotion and on human beings themselves.

Unconditional love defined as love with no conditions and without limits. Love of this stature, the most pure and simple, requires nothing but returns everything. The depths of the ocean, the infiniteness of space compare only slightly to the measurement of unconditional love. Madame de Stael, a Swiss author embodies unconditional love in her quote “Love is the emblem of eternity; it confounds all notion of time; effaces all memory of a beginning, all fear of an end.” (brainyquote.com) Love like this seen most commonly between a parent and their love for their child. Children misbehave; receive punishment, but still the love between the parent and child remains. A parent wants nothing more, then to provide for the child, to give that child more than physically possible. Although this quote “True, I talk of dreams, which are the children of an idle brain, Begot of nothing but vain fantasy.” Shakespeare Romeo & Juliet (1.4 97-99) speaks not of love, I believe taking these words as written speaks of pure love. ...ful emotion so often encountered, leads us to both joy and heartache. Lust tends to masquerade as love, but lusts like the devil come both from a common fabric, both fallen angels of love. Never too cautious of lust, neither love nor romance lies within.

When love not construed with human emotion love becomes as beautiful as the rising sun over a dew-covered meadow. Love through definition, a strong affection for another, seems so simple and precise, but forgets to bring in the human element, making it less certain and definite. Love affects all of us. Love’s ability to bring down walls, change a world and bring joy to a child’s eye makes love the most beautiful human emotion ever known to man.
