Death Valley
You might feel like it sucked to have the car run out of gas but it was actually a pleasure we found what we have been looking for, trees. Normally where trees are there is some water. We have been out of water for a few hours now but the heat is so extreme we feel like we’ve been out of water for a week. It has reached 119 degrees here and is steadily rising every minute. The heat is so severe you can practically smell it. The worst part is, is that we haven’t even reached the hottest part of the day yet. It’s so hot here we can feel the heat through our shoes. Now we see why people call it Death Valley. Death Valley is one of the hottest places on earth and to be stranded here is miserable. We have no cell service to call

anyone and no water to even drink so we decided to take the hike to the trees. I lead the way with my mom and Jenny following. When we were about 900 feet away from the trees I started running faster and faster after every step. “Come on it’s not much further” I yelled back to my mom and Jenny who were about 50 feet away. “We’re coming we’ll be there in a minute” my mom said as they both started running towards me. When they got about 10 feet away from me I stopped and let them catch up to me and we estimated how much further the trees were. “I think it’s about 350 feet away” Jenny said with an unsure voice. “I think it’s about 500 feet away” my mom said while she was looking at me with my guess. “I think it’s somewhere around 750 feet away” I said with a thoughtful tone. So we all guessed that it had to be at least somewhere with 200 and 800 feet away. We all just took off running to see who would get there first and who got there last. I was first, then Jenny, and then my mom. We were now at the trees and we found what we have been looking for, some warm, refreshing water and we also relaxed in the cool shade for a while because it wasn’t so hot there.
I started looking around and then I saw something out of the corner of my eye, a simple, brown trailer. I yelled “Guys there’s a trailer over there. It might have some stuff in it to help us.” They got up and we started running in the direction of the trailer. When we got there we realized it was locked.
Jenny broke into it and there was something we’ve been dying for. There was enough for all of us to survive another week. There was stale oatmeal, a can of beans, beer, and jerky so old it was white. The food to others would taste awful and be thrown away but to us it was treasure. While it might seem like not much it was everything to us. This is something that would keep us alive for quite a while.
On day 3, My mom was in the trailer helping me bathe but Jenny was outside. When I heard Jenny start screaming I covered up with a towel and ran outside to see Jenny waving a yellow blanket. I could hear a sound but I wasn’t quite sure what it was. I looked up and in the sky there was a helicopter flying straight towards us. They then had Lizard Lee bring them gas and show them back to the main road. Me, my mom, and Jenny were then saved and we are still friends with the pilots who saved
us.
As the two travel along, they start to run out of food. They find bits and pieces to eat as they go, but not enough to make last a long time. Until, however, they find an abundance of food in an abandoned house (McCarthy 138).
...al and I soon found out that the valves on the oxygen tanks were frozen. During this time, I frequently radioed Base Camp to keep them informed on the situation. I began to work on unfreezing the oxygen canisters while periodically checking Doug Hansen’s condition. Early in the morning Doug Hansen died. There was nothing that I could do to save him. I couldn’t thaw the oxygen tanks in time. I should have told him to turn back. In an attempt to preserve my life I finally was able to thaw the oxygen tanks. I promised Base Camp that I would descend but soon found this feat to be impossible. All of this calamity had left me very fatigued and all I could do was lay on the Hillary Step as my energy drained. I spent the very short remainder of my life reflecting on my achievements and hoping the rest of my team was all right. Then I drew my last breath and died.
Would you jump off a 50 ft Precipice? In the story “The Ravine”, Joe-Boy and Vinny are 15 year old, hawaiian boys. They are going to the ravine to jump off cliffs and swim. Two weeks and one day before they visit the ravine, a boy died jumping from the ravine. Vinny and Joe-Boy are different in many ways and are the similar in a few.
One day my owner pulled me out of his pocket then turn me on with his thumb then said, “blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah ,then i said turn back two blocks turn to the right then your your destination will be on your right then he put me back in his pocket but he forgot to turn me off.I tried to keep my mouth shut but there were so many questions to answer the then fell asleep then i woke up to hearing to sliding glass door are we home i whispered then i heard logan stomping on floor i’m home i whispered but i didn’t hear derrick then peeped out of my owners pocket we're not home i almost yelled then the oldest boy got curious then looked at me i pretend to be off then he
“License and registration please.” He said. He goes back to his car with my license and registration all of my thoughts were going crazy and I didn’t know what to do but think “ What is happening?” I thought.
Surprisingly, our parents had beaten us to the top and we all stopped in awe, mesmerized by the great waterfall in front of us. My mouth felt like the Sahara desert. I vividly remember reaching for the chilling water bottle that hid underneath the tons of clothes stuffed in my father’s black backpack to quench my thirst. I took off my beaten down shoes and stinky socks covered in dirt from the trail and blood from the blisters on my feet and dove into the refreshing lake. After swimming through the lake for a few seconds, I abruptly jumped out of the freezing water. My toes turned into a blue that reminded me of the blueberry muffins from breakfast that morning. My body shivered as I exited the lake and threw on a warm towel over my shoulders. Gradually my body heat increased, escaping the risk of hypothermia. At that point, I just wanted to go home. My family and I gathered all our belongings and I dragged my energyless body into the large, gray shuttle. The shuttle smelled of sweat from previous passengers. It drove us down a rough, bumpy trail, causing my tall father to constantly slam his head on the roof of the car. After we finally got back to our hotel, we all let off a sigh of
mainly found in the lower elevations of Death Valley. Even though they are poisonous sidewinders are not aggressive when they are left undisturbed. There are also scorpions which are nocturnal and hide under rocks. They do this to shield themselves from the desert sun. All scorpions have a venomous sting but those that are in Death Valley are not usually deadly. Tarantulas are harmless ground dwelling spiders and are most often seen in roads during the fall. The tarantulas are usually found in the higher desert valleys. There are many more species that are unique to Death Valley but they also have many in common with other national parks. There are many issues that are facing all of the national parks both environmental or man-made but there
This was one of the most horrendous things I have done recently (T). They didn’t want to help us; they wanted to do the opposite actually. They captured us and put us in cages like animals. We didn’t know what was happening or what they exactly had planned for us, but we knew it couldn’t have been anything good. We knew we had to act quickly. So, we sat there thinking, thinking of ways we could get out of this horrible mess, it was
After about an hour or two, many we’re exhausted. But, I wasn't. I knew if I could help and save others from this incident it would help me out ALOT! I have cleared out the whole block. House through house. But we had one more house to clear. But you could hear a kid screaming with a terrified voice. We walked upstairs hopefully knowing he would be in there. Captain and I walked in on the kid sitting there screaming for help. His name was Alex Martinez. He had been alone. We eventually took him down to truck and gave him oxygen to relax. His dad and mom came with biggest smile and hugged him with joy. BUt enough said. We moved on into the city and then there came a burning building with the address of 1109 s. clement ave.
Civil War is described as two groups or nations fighting in the same country. With that being said, the two stories “ The Sniper and “Cranes” are based off Civil War.
It was our fifth day in the Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico, the halfway point of the trek. I as the Crew Leader was responsible for the other 11 members of the crew, including 4 adults. I was in charge, and amazingly the adults rarely tried to take over, although they would strongly advise me what to do in some situations. Phil, with the exception of me, the oldest scout and the Chaplain for the trip, was my second. Together we dealt with problems of making sure everyone carried the right amount of stuff in their pack to who had to cook and cleanup each day. The trip had gone well so far, no injuries, and the worst problem had been a faulty backpack. As I walked I thought about the upcoming campsite. Supposedly this one had running water from a solar powered pump—so had the last night’s site but the tank was too low to use for anything but cooking because the of how cloudy it had been of late. But today was bright and shinny, and hot, so I didn’t think there would be a problem.
It doesn’t matter who you are, whether you’re religious, vegan, athletic, have good music taste, or enjoy the arts a little too much.
It was a sunny day. The leftovers of last week’s snowstorm still blanketed most of the surrounding area. I decided, after straggling about the house for nearly two hours, lethargy slowly creeping in, that I would go for a drive. I leaped in my trusty old Maverick and roared away. The Maverick, which I bought in 1975, was dark blue, (my favorite color). It was a steal and only ten years past its prime. It was a good, trustworthy car and until today, I had not had any problems with it. This was a spontaneous kind of getaway, so nothing was planned, no basket of food prepared, nor did I make any other preparations. Living in the city can be depressing so getting away from the concrete jungle for a few hours was a welcomed escape. I have not lived in this city for very long, although I knew the names of the adjoining towns, there were a few that I did not know. However, being the adventurer that I am, I drove off in a direction that I have never been. I do not know why I did not think to look at the gas gauge before I left perhaps I was too preoccupied with the thought of fleeing that I did not care.
door and follow the sidewalk to the back door. I open the door and a child-like
Now, this, of course, got me into some tight spots (pun intended). At the mere age of 4, I had managed to convince myself that I was ready to lock the bathroom door. Now, this isn’t as simple as it seems, it was that kind of lock that was tiny, slippery and whatnot, but of course, midnight was the perfect time to try a new thing. I was so full of my self-inflated sense of maturity and bravery I got myself stuck. Stuck like someone who is in quicksand and doesn’t know how to escape, stuck like someone behind bars. Stuck, stuck, stuck. Alone locked in, I was a prisoner and my jailer was my own stupidity. I grappled with the lock for minutes upon minutes, not wanting my foolishness to be known to my parents, because then I wouldn’t be the grown girl I had thought I was when I initially locked that door. Unfortunately, the lock just wouldn’t unlock. So like any rational four year old would, I screamed at the top of my lungs as tears flowed down my face, as I saw my life flash before my eyes, forever stuck in a bathroom. My parents, doing what rational parents do when they hear their four-year-old screech at the top of their lungs, ran to me. I wish I could say they got me out, but they couldn’t. A million things they must have tried. They attempted to talk me through unlocking the door, they tried to take out the lock, take down the door, anything and everything. But despite all their efforts, I
