The 3 Deadly Habits Many people are trapped in a bad habit that they wish they never had. Unfortunately, bad habits are formed more easily than good habits, and are usually the hardest to get rid of. Littering, smoking and texting while driving are all deadly bad habits. Since so many Americans possess these habits, the government enforces laws in attempt to counteract the effects of these bad habits. These habits need to be broken one way or another because they not only affect the person, but it can affect the ones close to them or even a whole nation. First off, the average American only walks a few steps before dumping their trash on the ground without even searching for a garbage can. For example, all it takes is for some trash in the road and it is a car accident waiting to happen. Whether it is because somebody drove their tiny …show more content…
National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year. To illustrate, Deianerah Logan was described as a popular 17-year-old high-school senior with a promising future. Although a sheriff claimed that Deianerah’s “life was taken way too early,” the only person who apparently “took” it was Deianerah, who was texting when she crashed into a school bus and died. You must drive for yourself and everyone around you. In fact, texting while driving leads to a decrease in reaction time by 37 percent. A driver’s reaction time makes a defensive driver, it includes the following: recognizing the light has changed, deciding to continue or break, or applying break. Shockingly, texting drivers take their eyes off the road for each text an average of 4.6 seconds -- which at 55 mph, means they were driving the length of a football field without looking. 4 seconds if all it takes to take a life or two
According to Stephanie Hanes in the essay “Texting While Driving Is as Dangerous as Drunk Driving,” a driver on a phone and those talking on a phone are four times likely to crash. This statistic shows how dangerous using the phone or even texting is while driving. As technology has increased, so has the use of cellphone. Distracted driving has caused an increase in car fatalities and disasters. However, distracted driving can be prevented if drivers take precautions, but no matter what we do, trouble will always be spelling on the road.
Texting and Driving has been a huge factor in accidents. More and more cities are starting to make cell phone use illegal to prevent many life threatening accidents. A phone call and text message can wait. You never know as drivers what the people are doing around you are doing unless you are watching your surroundings. The driver might be a really good driver and might be paying some attention to the road while you are on your phone but the road needs all of the drivers attention so that prevention of accidents is at its
According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, “The average American trashes 10 times as much food as a consumer in South east Asia” (Hsu). That is about equivalent to eating 10 meals to a consumer in South East Asia’s one meal. We throw away our left over food just because we are done ea... ... middle of paper ... ... ff every month you have to pay interest, which is a waste of money because you paying extra for that money you spent.
In Indianapolis, I see people toss trash out of their car, throw trash onto the ground, and have seen somebody aim for a garbage can, noticed that they missed it, and just left it on the ground. One person throwing garbage on the ground might not think much of it, however, when that piece trash collects other trash, they start to build up and soon form big loads of junk. For example, I am sure people never supposed that if they littered, that their trash would eventually end up in some kind of body of water. Typically, no one thinks about it until they actually go to a sea or lake and see how disgusting it looks because of the people who were too lazy to throw their garbage away. To worsen matters, littering has become very mutual, which must be stopped because in most instances, trash is not disposed of appropriately, which eventually leads to innocent individuals having to spend money on cleaning up. Some people know about the littering in Indianapolis, but most do not care, and that is only because they are not aware of the consequences it can bring or the way it appears to others. For the ones who do recognize it needs to spread the news around so there can be a solution.
People often disobey rules such as littering because they assume that is won’t harm anyone, but people don’t really think about the long term effects. Littering won’t necessarily harm someone at the time that it is being done, but it will eventually have a major impact on the plants and animals living in the area. Laws against littering are made to keep our environment clean because that ultimately will affect how we live in the future. Laws regarding driving is also another law that is treated as if it is unimportant, however there are many dangers in breaking driving laws. Laws such as speeding or texting or drinking and driving are critical because the second that the driver’s attention is on something else rather than on the road, not only is the driver’s life at risk but so are the peoples’ lives around them. Drunk driving and texting while driving are notorious for creating nothing but chaos and have both caused many accidents and put many people in danger. If an accident is happens from texting and driving or speeding and results in death, those ‘minor’ laws suddenly become just as serious as a felony such as murder. Overall, minor laws can have the same results as serious
One of the dangers of texting and driving is that it causes distractions. These distractions cause car accidents and unnecessary deaths of innocent drivers on the road. In a recent report done in 2011 The National Safety Council
Producing exceeding amounts of trash does not bother the majority of Americans, or they are unaware of the problem, otherwise the mind-blowing statistics would not exist. A major reason people produce large quantities of trash is out of pure laziness. For example, my roommate threw out a toaster because she had received a new one, and after she was questioned why she did not donate the toaster, her response was, “That is too much work.” Donating this toaster would have required her to exert extra effort and time that she was not willing to use. Often times, it is the same dilemma for recycling which sometimes requires a person to drive and personally place the recyclable products in the bins. People are not willing to utilize a minute amount of effort in order to help conserve the earth. However, much of this could be due to the fact that people do not realize how big of a problem trash production is.
You need just to bring a trash bag along with you on your walks in the woods or other places and pick up the occasional piece of trash that you can see. Even that small act can make a huge difference. You can tell your friends, parents, and other people to let them get involved in helping the
In today’s society, texting and driving have become an issue. Many teens and adults, have formed a habit of using their cell phones while driving. Texting while driving can be very distracting, which can cause many accidents to happen. In trying to prevent this, new laws have been passed, making the use of cell phones while operating a car, illegal. However, too many people do not respect this law. People should stop getting distracted while driving because texting while driving is taking people’s attention on the road, accidents are getting higher and is comparable to drunk driving.
First and foremost, the risk of using a phone while driving is a big chance of an accident more than what the people think. According to the Harvard study “Texting while driving and other forms of distracted driving are responsible for more than 1 million crashes, 400,000 injuries, and 3,000 deaths in the U.S. each year—and those numbers are likely to in...
The people of America throw away more trash than any other society in the world! America consumes 80 percent of our planet's resources, even though we make up only 20 percent of the world's population (Cooper 267). The average person throws away 4.3 pounds of trash each day. That's about 30 pounds per week and 120 pounds per month! (“Reduce and Reuse” 1). Americans throw away too much - that's the bottom line (Cooper 265). There is a garbage crisis in America and “the only part of the anti-waste message that has taken hold to any noticeable degree is the call to recycle” (Cooper 267). Our country's issues on trash and recycling go hand in hand. America produces too much trash, and the environment is suffering. There is some effort being put into countering these issues through recycling and trash management, but is it enough? (Cooper 267).
People often pick up bad habits in their younger years. Some habits people cannot control such as a twitch or an outburst. But most of the habits people are able to overcome and control. In this paper we will talk about three of the most common bad habits that people have and how to overcome them. These three habits are, drinking, drugs, and texting and driving. I chose these habits because they are the most common bad habits among people in this day and age, but they are also the most deadly. These habits are more than just a repetition; they are a repeating cycle that causes harm to not only the users but also people dealing with the family, and in some cases even random, innocent people.
Biting your nails, overeating, and even procrastination are bad habits that most people have problems getting rid of. There are many different ways to try to quit bad habits, but most of the time they do not work. Here are a few of the most successful ways to throw your addictions to the curb. First off you should always make a list of the reasons why it would benefit you to quit. Then, you need to choose something to substitute your bad habit with. Finally, reward yourself. Bad habits are difficult to break, but if you follow these three steps they will be easier to overcome.
People should know the negative impact throwing away a water bottle or newspaper, purchasing meat from the grocery store or consuming gasoline has on the environment, and many do not. By informing society about how their decisions affect the environment, we can help save our planet and change our attitude toward the land we live on, the water we drink and the air we breathe” and truly show respect for the stuff that we depend on. The United States produces “about 8.25 billion tons of solid waste each year” (Russell 1). People do not realize the impact they have on our planet and the environment. When people throw anything in the trashcan, they are contributing to the destruction of our planet.
