Introduction:
Throughout time it has been sought out to identify what makes a good leader. An all boys prep school with high standards and prides itself on its ability to mold their students. A new staff addition who does not follow in their ancient history traditions of education. The new teacher uses different teaching techniques to inspire and educate his students breaking them out of their shells. Many different resources indicates various answers. Some qualities are but limit to strategic, responsible, intellectual, focuses, developer, and analytical (Rath, 2007, p.18-23). Throughout the movies “Dead Poets Society” there are many clear examples of leadership. Within this paper there are various analysis of management, leadership issues,

Motivation and empowerment were two driving forces from beginning to end. Mr. Keating throughout this movies uses motivation to teach his students and empowers them to become who they are at the end of the film. Providing them with self esteem. To be a successful leader it is important to motivate their staff to work, using empowerment and promotion of self esteem, not force of fear. Throughout Strengths Finder, from Gallup there were various themes that were touched upon. It is important to focus on strengths as a manager/leader and to apply your strengths to provide a successful work environment for their employees. It is shown within Strengths Finder that a manager that ignores you and focuses on your weakness can be detrimental their company. Employees work best when managers focus on their strengths due to it decreases the odds of an employee to be miserable on the job (Rath, 2007, p. iv). With in the film some strengths that were exhibited …show more content…
Mr. Keating had used communication to energize, and to make the classroom environment exciting and vivid. This is important to provide ones employees or students. Without good communication employees have no direction and are provided no motivation (Rath, 2007, p. 65).
Connectedness- Throughout time we time to forget why we do what we do and just go through time as robots. Within this story it was demonstrated that as students we are all individuals that are connected one way or another. Any leader or manager that provided the sense of connectedness to one another and to work will provide a quality work environment. This will provide confidence within a group and for individuals (Rath, 2007, p. 73).
Harmony- Similar to connectedness, the theme of harmony was re-occurring throughout this film. Mr. Keating’s students all had different interests, backgrounds, and dreams. This strength that Mr. Keating provided was harmony amongst these young men were a place of harmony and a network for these men, a judgment free zone (Rath, 2007, p.
The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. Furthermore, a leader must be supportive of and willing to help their peers build their own strengths. The attributes listed above represent only a small subset of what makes an outstanding leader. Yet,
Throughout the years of being a student at Council Rock, I have come to the realization of what a true leader is. A leader is not someone that just plans events, collects money, or shows up to meetings. Rather, this is someone that has a true connection with their peers, and has unmatched passion for what they do. With this, I can confidently say that since seventh grade, as a young adult, I have been shaped into an individual that fits these traits. Since that time, I have been involved in student government,
One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
Identifying and understanding your own personal strengths is key to being a successful leader. Knowing your strengths means you can focus your efforts to maximize results, in yourself and in others. Strengths Finder 2.0 is designed to uncover your strengths and utilize these strengths to your advantage (Rath, 2007). Identifying and applying these strengths to your leadership style, will enhance your effectiveness as a transformational leader.
Leading organizations of school administrators offer educators various opportunities to encourage educators to become leaders. No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) has mandated that leaders be better prepared for the task of providing quality education to all. NCLB “… is forcing all educational stakeholders to face the weakness of contemporary school leadership and is making it impossible to ignore the need for higher quality principals” (Hale & Moorman, 2003, p.1). It is believed that all educators can be and are leaders in their own right. A leader is a visionary and has the ability to inspire others to aspire to greatness. Of the numerous opportunities that are offered, those that are most beneficial include but are not limited to leadership training programs, professional development, and creating shared leadership opportunities for teachers to become leaders. The systems “…that produce our nation’s principals are complex and interrelated – and governed by the states. Each state establishes licensing, certification and re-certification” (Hale & Moorman, 2003, p.1). States use the ISLLC standards “…as the framework for preparation programs and in service professional development of school superintendents, principals, and other leaders” (Hale & Moorman, 2003, p.3).
...he years, the more times I experience this film I seem to always take something away from it. From a managers standpoint you begin to realize the difference between the “I” and the “we” component of a team. You rely on each team member having a substantial amount of effort and involvement with the overall goal of the mission. For when the times comes each specialized team member must come forward and contribute their part in the overall objective, then return to their role as part of the team. Also, managers must support and remain confident in the decisions made by their team members. Sometimes major decisions must be made under a restricted time frame, and as the manager you must trust the solutions prescribed by your staff. Finally, you must take into consideration “human limitations”. No human being is perfect, and mistakes are inevitable, especially under stress.
It is very interesting to see how John Keatings establishes the relationship with his students. He is quite open with his students about his attitude towards the world and his ideas about the purposes of life, and other general things, however, at the same time he doesn't reveal his personal life. This is very understandable due to the fact that he is a teacher, and his role as a teacher prevents him from getting too personal with his students. Moreover, in my opinion, it was very important to keep this barrier between the professor and his students because otherwise they could've lost their respect for him as a teacher.
The movie, The Dead Poet's Society, was taken at a solemn preparatory school called Welton Academy. The students had a new inspirational English professor, John Keating. In Keating's class, he taught passion, courage, romanticism, and poetry. He also taught the concepts of transcendentalism. It held that every individual can reach ultimate truths through spiritual intuition.
Keating promote his own conflicting doctrine, but also promotes rebellion. In a sense, his return to the school is an anti-establishment stunt to challenge the schooling system. He encourages the boys to contest what is brought to them and act in a reckless manner, explicitly shows them the meaning of the dead poet society (himself providing the “5 centuries of verse” to the club) and encourages Neil to rebel against his father. Keating promotes pushing barriers, which in and of itself is not entirely a negative concept, but with no repercussions or limitations on behaviour, can bring about lots of misfortune. Suicide, expulsion and anti-establishment gags, all inspired by the teachings of Keating, lead the students down a path of self-destruction. One could contest that through Keating, the boys have reached a sense of purpose and happiness. Although this rebellion might lead to pleasure and delight, it is quite the grandiose misinterpretation of reality. A school’s purpose is to prepare students for “the real world” and life isn’t inherently enjoyable. Purpose is arguably nonexistent, and responsibility in maintaining a steady life is primary to following a vague passion that could leave one to wither. The kids that go to Welton enrolled to become successful, if some 80% of the students that enroll do achieve this, this elucidates a functional system, attempting to modify this system would go against its
There are countless amounts of ways to be a great leader. A great leader is someone who knows and understands what his/her people need. Such as their experience in education, and how loved they are by their people, as well as how they inspired their people making them such great leader. One of the characteristics of a great leader is their experience in education.
This book emphasizes on theories of becoming a leader, it is not a “how to” book by any means. Bennis states how leaders contribute to society and how crucial they are, along with the characteristics that come along with being a leader. He provides intriguing insight about leaders and emphasizes the integrity and authenticity that such people carry. In this reading, Bennis (the author) recognizes an immense amount of traits/characteristics a leader possesses which are: maturity, curiosity, trust, passion, guiding vision, candor, self knowledge, and daring. Bennis claims that people are not born with these traits, and that people gain these traits by pushing themselves to exceed others.
Dead Poets Society is written by N.H. Kleinbaum in 1989. It is also famous as a movie. It has been published by Voice for many years. N.H. Kleinbaum is an American writer and journalist. She also wrote Dr. Dolittle series.
Principal Pettis has to come to the realization that it is not possible to “have all the competence, all the time, and all the information needed at any one time to get the job done.” (Sergiovanni, 2015, p. 12). She will have to empower and cultivate leadership skills in teacher-leaders to give her an equitable perspective on the needs of her school. In this way, learning is ongoing for all, making the important connection between leadership and learning that is so powerful in successful schools. With these few changes, the heartbeat of the school is
Keating brings the class to the hall, he tells Neil to read a poem from the book. Then, he ask the class to tear the pages out of the book and have the class gather around him. He tells them that words and ideas can change the world and everyone one in this room can do that. It is possible to achieve that because we are human race. Each and everyone should make their life special and different from others.
Leadership is not about the power you have, but rather the people you inspire. A good leader uses their influence to improve and enhance a group. However, “good” is not fair description of the type of leader Mrs. Hackett is. She is exceptional, stupendous, and marvelous director, teacher, and friend. Mrs. Hackett shows that a true leader is hard working, strong, and selfless.
