There are many positive and negative effects of being a dancer. I chose to do my research paper on something having to do with dance because I have been dancing for eleven years. Dancing can improve your health in a lot of ways but there are both positive and negative effects of being a dancer. Dance can help improve your health, body, and mind. Some of these ways include fighting against diseases, improving posture and weight, and reducing stress. But, there are also some negative effects of dance including a higher risk of injuries and the lasting effects those injuries can have on your life.
There are many positive effects being a dancer can have on your life, one of the positive effects is that dance can improve your physical and mental properties. One way dance can be used to improve physically or mentally is dance therapy. The official definition for dance therapy is, “the therapeutic use of movement to improve the mental and physical well-being of a person.” (“Dance Therapy” Line 1) There have been a few scientific studies done on the effects of dance therapy on people that are considered “healthy” and people with serious illnesses. The effects of dance therapy physically are for exercise purposes, it can improve your coordination and how you move and also decrease the amount of tension and stress you have in your body and mind. The effects of dance therapy emotionally are, to increase self- confidence and also interaction with other people. Some of the scientific studies have claimed that dance therapy can also strengthen the immune system and help to prevent diseases. (“Dance Therapy” 7-12) Sometimes dance therapy can be used to help people recover that are suffering from certain illnesses. One of the experi...

The problems and benefits of dancing can have negative and positive effects on your life. Injuries, staying in shape and improving your mind are all parts of the dance experience and dance entails a lot of training. No dancer every wants to get hurt or get an injury, but it happens to everyone. As long as you treat it correctly and give it time to heal, you will be able to keep dancing like normal. Dancing is one of the most enjoyable activities to experience, doing your best to keep a healthy mind, self, and body is the most important part of the entire dance experience.
By universal definition, "sport" is listed as "an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively." Football, basketball, baseball, soccer and other primary activities have always been concretely defined as sports in society. However, one of the most physically demanding activities is constantly forgotten when it comes to the realm of sports- dance. Dance requires a tremendous amount of training and creates an aura of competition in which people compete to be the best, win, and take home the trophy- just like in traditionally accepted sports. These sports, however, do not possess an element of psychological health threats that some competitive dancers unfortunately must account for due to the emphasis placed on physical appearance.
Ballet is an athletic art form that utilizes muscle control, flexibility, and physical strength. It requires extreme discipline from the dancers and takes an extreme amount of mental concentration. This discipline causes dancers to have success throughout life and specifically in academic studies. There are many ways that dance can affect the success of a person’s life; however, there are two in specific that make dancers generally more successful. To begin, ballet causes dancers to be self-motivated workers; dancers cannot rely on others to push them to be better, but must have the drive within themselves.
It will allow me to be a manager and better my leadership skills. I will learn how to manage a big group of people, which is something that can be applied to many various careers. I will learn the best way to be a teacher and to stay calm and focused when things get difficult or crazy. All of these skills are not only applicable to the dance world, but to life in general.
According to Judith Hanna, “dance may promote wellness by strengthening the immune system through muscular action and physiological processes,” which shows that a person can benefit from dancing by allowing the body to do physical exercises which can allow the body to strengthen itself. In order to do this, there are multiple ways in which Judith Hanna focuses in on to show that dance can have a powerful impact on the body. She explains that there are four different ways in which a person can develop a since of control over their body by (1) possession dance, (2) mastery of movement, (3) escape or diversion from stress and pain through a change in emotion, states of consciousness/ physical capability and (4) confronting stressors to work through ways of handling their effects.
The typical idea of a dancer is that they are tall, slender, full of energy, and lucky because they dance with all of the “stars”. Much of this is true, however, what many people do not think of are the many hardships that a dancer goes through in order to achieve their high status in the dance world. It takes much hard work and determination along with good direction to become a dancer. However, nothing good comes without a price. Dancers often times have many pressures put on them which can lead to physical and emotional damages. These damages occur through the pressures from the media, parents, teammates, and the stereotype that society has placed on dancers.
According to an article by Marjie Gilliam, titled “The many Health Benefits of Dancing,” dance offers a total body workout, using all of the major muscle groups and providing heart-healthy benefits. And that “the benefits can extend beyond fitness.” His study shows that, a recent study in the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine found that teaching the cha-cha to a small group of older adults twice a week for six months was enough to improve their memory and cognitive function on a number of tests. Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that ballroom dancing at least twice a week made people less likely to develop dementia (Marjie Gilliam). In my personal experience, dance helped improve my health because it is a form of physical activity. For example, in high school, I was in a dance club and we had to dance to hip hop. It required a lot of body movements and a lot of energy. I remember sweating a lot after an intense hip hop dance session. Moreover, through this dance club I lost weight and got more fit. Thus, dancing definitely benefits our health and keeps our body in shape. In kinesiology where health factors are also present, it is important to reflect that dance has shown many groups of people, past or present, the significance amount of movements it offers as well as health benefits ever since back in the
Albert Einstein once said “Dancers are the athletes of God.” Dancers deserve to have the title of athlete, to start, take a look at the definition of an athlete “a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength.” While dancing requires great artistry, artistry is just one aspect of dance, because it clearly has an athletic side as well. Dancer’s athletic side is not seen by many because of the reality of what people see on stage, but is what is seen on stage all of it? The amount of passion and dedication dancers have leads to countless hours at the studio every week. With the many genres of dance to choose from, each involves athleticism one way or another. The many different options make it easier for a dancer to branch out and explore new ways of fulfilling their dreams. Dancers need to stop being underestimated by everyone, they need everyone to see them as athletes and artists.
During a soccer game, when a player viciously uses his or her hands to purposely collapse an opposing player, this act would be taken in as a foul or given a yellow card, then the opposing player would be given penalty kick. Just like how soccer follows a strict rule and sportsmanship, dancers are also required to adhere to fair-play of the competition. In dance, as well as other sports, their sportsmanship show self-control, respectful and courteous demeanor, and respect to opposing players/teams; these factors also count for coaches. (wacpc.com) For example, when an event/activity holds an official/professional rulebook, then that makes the event a sport. Provided by Multi-sport Organization and USA Dance, the dance departments owns the proof of dance counted as a sport with same regards to contests/games and scoring-rewarding features. Fair sportsmanship is mandatory in order to play the activities smoothly and justly. Not only will being known as a “good sport” improve the attitudes of an individual, it will enhance his or her own experience of the occupation; growth in confidence, improvement performance, and results will directly show what person is inside that person when the player is in
Dance does not just consist of turning and jumping; balance is also a key aspect in every style of dance. For balance, in physics terms, the net force and net torque is zero otherwise the dancer’s momentum would change and they might fall or tip over. The net force causes the change in the dancer’s momentum and it consists of gravity, support from the floor, and the friction from the floor. Torque is defined as an off center force or forces which can cause the dancer to spin.
Dance has different definitions for each individual. For some it may symbolize beauty, perfection, and struggles amongst many others. The dance movement themselves can be executed in various ways (Ferrufino & Coubard, 2012). Not everyone performs the same exact way there are a variety of different ways to perform and that is what makes dance so special. From those precisely choreographed in advanced to those created on impulse or on the spur of the moment all dances require exploration and creativeness (Ferrufino & Coubard, 2012). Every person who watches choreography by Lizzie MacKenzie is probably surprised that she is not as well known as other choreographers (Nevin, 2013). However, she is identified as an exceptional dancer as well as for her many guest appearances in high profile social events (Nevin, 2013). She is also recognized as the founder and artistic director of Extensions Dance Company, which is one of the most successful and respected dance companies in the country (Nevin, 2013).
