To begin, dance has been a major factor in my life. I began dancing at the age of two when my parents enrolled me so I could burn off the typical two-year-old energy. 10 years later, I was given the opportunity to dance in front of 6,000 people at the Minnesota State Dance Competition. Looking back at all of the great experiences I have had through dance, I truly see how much dance has been a part of my life since the very beginning. Being a four-year varsity member, three-year choreography team member, two-year Central Lakes Conference Honorable Mention, sophomore officer, and senior captain, I have learned so much about myself through my time in dance. I have learned how to be strong, how to balance responsibilities, how to be part of a team, and how to set goals and work towards them. These are skills that I will continue to take with me through life and use while continuing my education. …show more content…
My junior year, I decided to compete with a 30-page project with two other students in my class. The project I engaged in was called the Financial Literacy Promotion Project. My partners and I promoted the ideas of saving and budgeting money to people in our community including our high school, a Girl Scout troop, and all of the fourth grade students in the Sauk Rapids school district. While promoting the financial literacy lessons, I learned that I really enjoyed teaching the fourth grade students and found that Elementary Education could be what I am meant to do in life. Along with finding a career interest, my project made it to National DECA which took place in Nashville, Tennessee which was the greatest experience of my life. I had the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and realize that there are so many opportunities outside of Sauk Rapids,
Later that year, I was accepted into Spanish Honors Society, a volunteer based program to help out the Spanish communities near my school along with volunteering to help raise money for organizations that help less developed countries. One particular project that I helped raise money for through Spanish Honors Society, was Project Running Waters. The money raised for this event was donated to help people living in Guatemala receive fresh water through pipe systems that would be built. We raised over one thousand dollars to donate to this cause. Knowing that I can positively impact individuals in my community and in other countries makes me feel like I have grown maturely and am able to understand what needs to be done to make a difference to
Since the age of two, I have been dancing. I have been involved in lyrical and classical ballet, contemporary, pointe, hiphop, jazz and tap. When I turned 6 I also took up gymnastics. Through middle school I danced, and did gymanstics as well as softball and soccer. I loved these sports but when high school hit, I had to pick one and I chose cheerleading. I chose this sport because it was not only a extraordinary team athletically but they were extremely involved with the community. We had fundraisers for less fortunate children multiple times and even got to interact with them every winter. The leadership role on the cheer team taught me so much, we lead the entire student body to have school spirit and respect at the football games every friday night. My senior year I decided to switch back to dance and tried out for my high school dance team, and made it! It has been such a blessing to me by showing me even more leadership and how to serve others at our school and in the community.
I have been dancing since the age of four. I started my intense training with Tanju and Patricia Tuzer, Debra Bale, and Linda Brown at Tuzer Ballet. I developed as a dancer, attending every summer intensive performing in every show, advancing from intermediate to apprentice to junior company and finally to senior company. The dance studio became my second home. I took classes in ballet, pointe, modern, contemporary, tap, jazz, lyrical jazz, theatrical movement, hip-hop, zumba, and African-Ballet, pointe, contemporary, and lyrical jazz being my favorites. Not only has ballet taught me how to move gracefully, it has taught me commitment and persistence. Every class, every performance, every combination is the opportunity to grow. Through this art I have developed a tough skin that helps me fight adversity; however, most importantly I have learned passion and
I have been a dancer since the age of 3. My earliest memory of dance was when I was too terrified to go on stage during a recital and I refused to go on no matter how much they tried to push me. Up until the age of about 12, dance had been just a hobby or an extracurricular activity. In fact, I didn’t even enjoy going to dance. I didn’t have friends there and I wasn’t that good of a dancer. It wasn’t until I participated in Dance Bermuda’s summer dance intensive in collaboration with the American Ballet Theatre in 2012, that I realized that I had a passion for dance. At the program, I was exposed to other dancers that were my age and older and most of them were much more advanced than I. So to avoid being the worst dancer in the program, I took to YouTube and watched hours and hours of dance videos. I researched all the ways to improve my ballet technique. I can remember trying to practice my pirouettes in the kitchen and falling onto the table and knocking a whole bunch of things over. I was determined to be as good as the other girls in the program. By the end of the two weeks I was fired up, motivated, and ready to get back to class after the summer.
Although I am not a great dancer by any means, I learned through my years of involvement in dance that if you want something you should not let any hardships stop you. This message is what helps push me toward success in my educational
The similarities that I observed is that modern dance pioneers placed emphasis on body movements. Martha Graham stated that modern dance is easy, glamorous and delightful. To me is a dance that is difficult to perform even when some of the body movements appeared easy for people do such as arm movement, falling and getting up. Moreover, the differences that I observed were the techniques of movements that each choreographer/pioneer used. For instance Martha Graham technique includes the used coordination, "contraction and release". Duncan for her part used simple gestures. Furthermore, Humphrey created dance entirely without musical accompaniment, she also used imbalance as the base for her movement such as fall and recovery. The modern dance
In the realm of arts education, two theories address cultural diversity, social justice, and critical inquiry: Culturally Relevant Teaching by Gloria Ladson-Billings and Critical Dance Pedagogy developed by Nyama McCarthy-Brown. These theories offer educators methodologies to engage students in meaningful learning experiences that honor their cultural identities while fostering critical consciousness. Culturally Relevant Teaching and Critical Dance Pedagogy are both theories within arts education that aim to address social and cultural issues while promoting meaningful learning experiences. While both culturally relevant teaching and critical dance pedagogy share a commitment to social justice and critical consciousness, they differ in scope and application due to their specific focuses

I became a dancer at the age of three. However, as much as how I love dancing, my skill level was always perceived as "well" but never excellent among the peers. After I finished my 10th grade, I thought I would never dance again. Joining the Super Sensation Dance Crew, which is now officially a new dance studio in London became a big surprise and one of the best decisions I have made in university, because it discovered my potential and enhanced my confidence greatly. I was obsessed with the dance shows performed by this dance crew when I was in first year college.
Finding the space and time to participate in any type of dance possible at the moment was. Ecuadorian , Mexican, Colombian, Salvadorian and Dominican dance shared its part on my priority list. With every turn and step I made I felt I was becoming a better person everyday. Dance looks easy and fun but keeping the discipline to stay on my spot, hold the right number of steps, maintaining the same position of my feet and hands is hard. Rehearsal after rehearsal, blisters on my feet, bleeding ankles because of heels used to dance, and stinky sweaty clothes became a very important part of me.
Contemporary dance first originated from ballet, however changed when Isadora Duncan decided that she didn’t want to dance ballet. She disregarded the refined technical Classical ballet and thus the concept of Contemporary dance was born. This style incorporates movements where the body moves freely and doesn’t have restrictions, embodying raw human emotion. Pioneers of contemporary dance comprise of the internationally known Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham (The Conversation, 2014, online) + (Bibliography, 2012, online). These three dancers helped to revolutionise contemporary dance and express their interpretation of it, all unique but added layers to the genre. A range of movements that originated from these dancers are
Pulling up every single part of my body, I try not to gain all my weight on my pointe shoe; but, I could not. I give up; all of my body weights drop to my toe with a great amount of pain, my body collapse to the ground. “Chin up, straight up your back Rose!” Mrs. Annie continues, “Get your knees straight. Do not ever be afraid or give up whatever you do.
On the 14th of September, I attended both a Dance Technique class and a Rehearsal session. Prior to attending the two classes, I had a general idea of what I was going to expect. My expectations were low for the technique class since it was a hip hop class for beginners; consequently, I knew it wouldn’t be too rigorous. However, I had higher expectations for the rehearsal class, knowing the room would be filled with serious dancers that are apart of a company, taking dance more seriously. I first attended the beginner’s hip hop technique class.
“Dance, the art of precise, expressive, and graceful human movement, traditionally, but not necessarily, performed in accord with musical accompaniment. Dancing developed as a natural expression of united feeling and action.”
