Pulling up every single part of my body, I try not to gain all my weight on my pointe shoe; but, I could not. I give up; all of my body weights drop to my toe with a great amount of pain, my body collapse to the ground. “Chin up, straight up your back Rose!” Mrs. Annie continues, “Get your knees straight. Do not ever be afraid or give up whatever you do. Once you give up on hope, you had failed; you won’t able to stand up again. Now, why don’t you try again?” Definitely, I want to dance on my pointe, not giving it up after only trying for twenty minutes! I straighten up every single part of my body, standing straight, pull my ears and hairs up, and push my arc out. Yes! I stood on my pointe for five seconds! Even though I only stood for five …show more content…
In our daily life, people meet many obstacles that block our way and tempt us to give up what we work for. While having ballet class, Mrs. Annie taught us many hard movements that I could not master easily. When I mastered hard tasks, the tricky movements, unconsciously I figure out to have a more hopeful, patient attitude in other similar situation. Ballet teaches the students to have confidence whatever they do, especially for little girls. Also, by trusting others I received a lot of encouragement, which made me have confidence in myself when I danced on the stage. Many children have a shy attitude towards the new surrounding, and I was one of them. But through ballet, I had an opportunity to let go of my shyness, join in with my peers and enjoy the fun class. Besides of having confidence, ballet had taught my sister and me to concentrate and focus on what we do. Children, the little bundles of energy, which always stresses parents, have a hard time at concentrate on one thing for a long time. But during ballet classes, they learn to pay attention, even from a young age. Which helps children to concentrate on studying also. Thus, by having ballet classes little children grow spiritually that greatly helps them in their later
Now, I think back to the moment a few months ago when I earned my first pair of pointe shoes. Before that experience, I had always made an effort to become strong enough because I was determined to receive my first pair. Practice makes perfect, so I repeated the crushing relevés, popping my ankles by pushing them constantly until they felt shaky. I had invested blood, sweat and tears into these pointe shoes. It was sometimes difficult to remain motivated and
Ballet is an athletic art form that utilizes muscle control, flexibility, and physical strength. It requires extreme discipline from the dancers and takes an extreme amount of mental concentration. This discipline causes dancers to have success throughout life and specifically in academic studies. There are many ways that dance can affect the success of a person’s life; however, there are two in specific that make dancers generally more successful. To begin, ballet causes dancers to be self-motivated workers; dancers cannot rely on others to push them to be better, but must have the drive within themselves.

The applauding audience, the lights, sequins and feathers, the colorful, elaborate tutus, and satin pointe shoes capture the hearts of young girls. Where else can a young girl dream of becoming a princess, a swan, a dancing snowflake or flower, or a sugarplum fairy? Where else can she be a fairy tale character like Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty? Where else can she be rescued by her handsome prince and collapse into his arms? Ballet is the magical world where these dreams can come true. Young girls and women can be all of these things, symbolizing femininity in a culture that teaches young girls to be and want everything pink and pretty. However, in the shadow of the spotlight lurks an abusive world of eating disorders and malnourished dancers.
According to the Children’s Development Institute, ballet can teach a child to be able to be in front of people and to be confident in themselves. On top of this it can help children learn to follow directions, work well with others, and have a sense of self-discipline.("The Benefits of Classical Ballet, 2015). This website does not support any medical facts. Childhood is where our minds are molded. Of course, there are always genetic mental illnesses, but who we are as a person often stems from how we were raised. Ballet can help our minds with so much. We learn and grow from its beauty and its discipline. I have only been dancing in a class since last fall and I already have learned so much. Ballet is not only the foundation for all dance forms, it is a foundation for confidence and self-awareness as
Ballet is a beautiful and romantic type of performance art. It originated in the Italian court systems in the 15th century (Jonas). Since its origination, ballet has undergone many changes and gained worldwide recognition. Filled with elaborate costumes, cheering audiences, lights, weightless movements and beauty; ballet is admired by many. On the magical stage ballerinas can become whoever they wan to be, and perform in a world of fantasy. For these reasons, children, especially little girls, all over the world dream of becoming ballerinas when they grow up. However, becoming a professional ballerina is an extremely difficult accomplishment, in which few will achieve (Kelso 1). The world of ballet may seem to be filled with glitz and glamor but, behind the curtain there is an entirely different story. There are extreme demands and pressures put on these young dancers to be very thin and nearly perfect. Some of which include body and weight demands, competition, and social pressures. These constant pressures can lead to a negative body-image and even debilitating eating disorders (Price and Pettijohn).
As I enter the ballet studio, all worries dissipate because in that moment my responsibility is to focus strictly on the movement and the circular energy flowing through my body. “Breathe!” my teacher insist as she demands perfect alignment, maximum turnout, lifted elbows, and épaulement. It is the first
Movies with dancing have always been a big success, simply because they cause people to want to move and be free like the actors on the set. Dirty Dancing, directed by Emile Ardolino, is a movie that makes people want to jump into the screen and be a part of the show. It is a favorite among teenage girls simply because of the kind of dancing that is performed. Another movie, Save the Last Dance, directed by Thomas Carter, is also well liked by teenage girls because of the dance moves. These two movies portray similar stories of girls finding happiness through expression of different kinds of dancing.
For most dancers, ballet is not just a hobby but a career that requires years of training. Ballet dancers often began training at a very young age as it takes years to mould the body into the unnatural shapes suitable for ballet (Rinaldi, Hanley & D’Amboise, 2010, p. 16). Eight to ten is said to be the best age for girls to start ballet training; boys may begin a bit later (Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, 2015). Ballet dancers train in order to compete in major events such as the Youth America Grand Prix, the New York International Ballet Competition, the Prix De Lausanne and the International Ballet Competitions; but they also train with the purpose of joining a professional ballet company (Diana, 2010).
I have been a dancer since the age of 3. My earliest memory of dance was when I was too terrified to go on stage during a recital and I refused to go on no matter how much they tried to push me. Up until the age of about 12, dance had been just a hobby or an extracurricular activity. In fact, I didn’t even enjoy going to dance. I didn’t have friends there and I wasn’t that good of a dancer. It wasn’t until I participated in Dance Bermuda’s summer dance intensive in collaboration with the American Ballet Theatre in 2012, that I realized that I had a passion for dance. At the program, I was exposed to other dancers that were my age and older and most of them were much more advanced than I. So to avoid being the worst dancer in the program, I took to YouTube and watched hours and hours of dance videos. I researched all the ways to improve my ballet technique. I can remember trying to practice my pirouettes in the kitchen and falling onto the table and knocking a whole bunch of things over. I was determined to be as good as the other girls in the program. By the end of the two weeks I was fired up, motivated, and ready to get back to class after the summer.
Growing up, one of my priorities was dance. I started dancing at age five at the City Performing Arts Academy and at fifteen I began taking classes at Elite Dance Academy. From early on in my dance career, I aspired to be just like the older dancers at my studio. They were such beautiful dancers and I dreamed of growing up to be as talented as they were. I remember in one of my classes we were given the opportunity to watch the advanced ballet class dance. This was the first time I ever saw dancers en pointe. I was utterly awestruck. I could not wrap my head around how these girls could so gracefully and seemingly effortlessly dance on their toes; however, I knew from that moment that I wanted nothing more than to dance en pointe. Soon, I realized
Pointe shoes are special shoes the women wear to dance on their toes. The tip of the shoe, called the box is made out of tightly packed layers of paper mache, fabric, or cardboard. This needs to be very sturdy, because the dancer will be putting all of her weight on it. The sole of the shoe, or the shank, is made out of leather board or red board, it is important for this to be sturdy, because it supports your ankles. In some professional companies pointe shoes are custom made to fit the dancer’s foot perfec...
“Sometimes I can hear my bones straining under the weight of all the lives I'm not living.” Death is the binding element to the human experience; it is inevitable and inescapable. Death serves as a catalyst for trauma for those who lack the ability to grieve and accept reality. Trauma is characterized as an emotional response triggered by a tragic event and its symptoms include unpredictable emotions and difficulty maintaining relationships. In the postmodern novel, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Jonathan Safran Foer demonstrates the effect of trauma through the eyes of multiple narrators, mainly through an 11 year old protagonist, Oskar Schell who suffers from the loss of his father in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The Northern Territory is known for its culturally diverse population and some would say it is the ‘multicultural hub’ of Australia. With all of these cultures comes distinctive customs and traditions. Throughout history dance has been used to help people develop a sense of identity, the younger generations are also taught social patterns and values through the different dances. The significance of these traditional dances was to reinforce and celebrate cultural law and practices including the celebration of the passage from child to adulthood or spiritual worship. The predominantly Western culture in Australia often causes minority groups to struggle for recognition regarding their beliefs and traditions. This is parallel to the Australian dance industry, where many cultural dance groups feel they have to justify who they are and are often
“Dance, the art of precise, expressive, and graceful human movement, traditionally, but not necessarily, performed in accord with musical accompaniment. Dancing developed as a natural expression of united feeling and action.”
