Summary of My Dance
Title: Solar Yoga - My dance makes use of yoga movements and typical classical Indian dance movements to worship the sun.
Music: Om Namah Shiva by Jah Wobble
Description: Motif 1: A tray like movement with the arms, one arm is carried across the body followed by the other arm. From either right to left/left to right, depending on the direction that the dancers are going to travel in.
Motif 2: A wiping action, where the hand sweeps across the opposite arm, from shoulder to arm, to lead in to the next movement.

The second stimulus was a yoga book (Yoga: Mind & Body - by the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre). While reading this book, I noticed pages on the Sun Salutation, which I thought had good positions that I could incorporate into the dance. There were also some simple asanas (movements) in the book which I thought I could include in the performance.
Appraisal: I felt the idea of using the sun as a dance idea would be very good because not only would I be able to develop my dance using relationship, action, dynamics and speed, but I would also be able to have a focus in my dance which I could communicate to the audience. I thought that communicating with the audience is quite good because they can see that the dance is about worshipping the sun, and not only a collection of dance movements. Yoga comprises of many stretches, which I have included in my dance, but the main asanas (yoga movements) asanas that I used were "The Tree", where your left foot is flat against your right knee. I developed this by changing the level and making dancer 2 do it on the floor. Another asana that I used was "The Triangle". I didn't actually include it in the dance, but

The last asana I used was "The Cobra", which is one of the movements in Surya Namaskar. Dancer 2 did the position exactly as it was supposed to be performed in Surya Namaskar, but I developed this with dancer 1 by having one of their legs in the air while they balanced on their arms and other leg. Snake like movements helped me to develop "The Cobra" asana, for example, when the dancers swing their arms from side to side to show a snakes undulating motion. I changed the position of the focus from down stage centre, to down stage right, to finally up stage centre. I think this was good because as the sun moves across the sky, so does the focus.
The music is quite slow at the beginning and then becomes faster later in the dance because it enabled me to contrast the same movements but with different dynamics, for example, the tray motif is performed much faster when the music goes faster. The main problem I found with the dance was the ending. The music didn't have a definite ending until after 5 minutes and there was no way for me to edit the music, so

Dance is the universal language of the soul. Dance speaks of the truest inner feelings and life experiences of a dancer. Every dancer and/or choreographer will grow up to have a very distinctive style and set of unique techniques, dance values, and teaching methods to be followed. The dancer whom we will be analyzing in this paper is a pioneer of modern dance, Lester Horton. He was born on January 23rd, 1906 in Indianapolis, Indiana (Segal, 1998). He had moved to California to create dances and had developed a fresh and unique style of technique and choreography (Warren, 1977). He established the first permanent theater in America devoted to dance, and organized one of the first integrated modern dance companies (Yeoh, 2012).
For the dancer, music and choreography are paramount. The music guides the dancer, and the moves express the music. However, the dance has to start from somewhere.
New Dance is described as a developing art form; this dance was articulated in the early 20th century. According to Chapter 8 in History of Dance book, “the new dance emerged as a response to the ballet that populated the variety shows and music halls, which had a rigid formula of steps and poses” (Kassing). The New Dance was a product of several strands that interlaced together dancers’ studies and backgrounds; these strands and others were woven together in a historical, political, and societal framework. For instance, one strand of New Dance consisted of the concepts, techniques, costumes, and stage settings from around the world. These strands influenced major dancers and choreographers, such as, Isadora Duncan, Loie Fuller, Ruth St. Denis, and Ted Shawn.
During the performance, the principle of spacing was demonstrated when the dancers scattered themselves across the stage and used excellent spacing. As each scene approached, they respectfully stationed themselves in their allotted positions. Never was the stage oddly spaced or bare. Also, the core principle of dance was demonstrated by using rhythm/time. This referred to the speed of moment of the dancers. Throughout the play, the time of the dancers fluctuated. There were times of excitement when the dancers expressed feelings of joy and therefore they had a fast speed but there are other times when the dancers were confused and uncertain and as a result, their speed were much slower and calmer.
I became interested in this field from the moment I realized dance/movement could be presented as a statement. Breakdancing The history of choreography is also very important: Any choreography that seems new, fresh and different is usually a variation of something that has been done before. As long as men and women have lived upon this earth, they have danced. The art of movement is among the oldest of the arts. So for eight months I’ve been learning the skills of hip hop and breakdancing by going to a hip hop club every week where I learned the basic skills of breaking like how to top-rock and six-step.
The dance performance of “The Sun King Dances” created and directed by a graduate student that I observed was remarkable. All the dancers performing this piece were women. There were a total of five acts in this performance; Act I, Act II, Act III, Act IV and the Grand Ballet. The dancers were recreating the Sun King’s dances from the seventeenth and eighteenth century. Each act had an different set of scenery, choreography, costumes, music and along with a number of dancers performing the dances. All the dances had a similar theme that connected to one another, but each act was unique and had a special story behind it. My favorite act was the first act because when the dancers were performing, their synchronized and repetitive movements reminded me of the hour and minute hands of a clock. My favorite part was when four of the five dancers are holding hands and dancing in a circle while the fifth dancer is in the center of the circle turning and going up and down at the same time.

Through the portrayals of exquisite postures and contortions, yoga was further stigmatized as an aspect of a mysterious, strange Eastern culture. These contortionist poses and images that circulated were often understood in connection with yoga, however, so many of these poses are not unique to traditional Indian yoga. The media and books that contained these images were designed to entertain and appeal to that part of the human mind that is so entangled in mysteries and what others do, rather than to educate. Different dances came from different cultures in this performance. As I had said before, “Oshun, Goddess of Love”, came from Africa. It arrived in America during the slave trade and has been here ever since. “Paper Moon” came from Japan. The text from the dance came from an adaptation from “Omoiyari”, which is an ancient Japanese dance ritual.
I had my first dance recital on the day I turned four. Now I don’t remember anything from that day, but I believe that that day is when I learned I loved to perform. I’ve been taking dance lessons since then, and many things that I do now involve performing in some type of way.
Ultimately, it is evident that through the use of non-movement and movement components in combination with shifts in functions of dance, Bollywood and African dance are still able to formulate cultural meaning. By comparing African and Indian dance while contrasting how they have transformed over time, the “mass pattern of dance which may hold a mirror to humanity…functionally allowing the human body to be exposed to the world, communicating in every aspect, whether it is the magnificent art form or the daily movement” (Doris Humphrey) enabled an analysis of expression through movement. Generally, by adapting a few elements to better suit the modern day, the face of both Bollywood and African dance is able to still withhold a cultural context while still having the capability of pleasing the contemporary generation.
Have you ever thought about the history of dance, or how long human life has known it? Dance has been here longer than we actually think. We can take dance back all the way to 600 BC to Now. Dance has made very big changes overtime. It went from doing it in honor for only the dead or religious situations to now just doing it for fun. The way or different moves have also changed over this big course in time. It ways and moves have changed, and the outfits used to perform these different types of dances. There has been clean and dirty dancing all along, some of things in those dances have stayed, others haven’t. Dance has been a very great thing and will stay being a great thing during human life because it expresses a lot. It expresses itself, and a person can express their feelings, in the different kind of moves. It does take time to get to know the moves but you can get through.
