On the 14th of September, I attended both a Dance Technique class and a Rehearsal session. Prior to attending the two classes, I had a general idea of what I was going to expect. My expectations were low for the technique class since it was a hip hop class for beginners; consequently, I knew it wouldn’t be too rigorous. However, I had higher expectations for the rehearsal class, knowing the room would be filled with serious dancers that are apart of a company, taking dance more seriously.
I first attended the beginner’s hip hop technique class. This class was packed with around thirty or more dancers which was remarkably overwhelming since it was so congested in the dance room. As I scanned the room, I noticed that the dancers were stretching as the instructor was preparing for the class. The class began with warm ups such as isolations and stretches. It was enjoyable to watch since a large number of students had high energies, willingly following the instructions from their teacher. The instructor announced that this was the class’s first day learning choreography, so everyone was ecstatic to finally learn a routine. Prior to teaching the choreography, the instructor gave background information about the song and its meaning. Beginning the choreography, he started off with counts. He used slow counts, then progressed by speeding up to tempo. One significant thing I noticed was that he broke up his teaching into sections which was helpful to those that had difficulty with retention.
