For my performance analysis paper, I went to the BFA Senior Dance Concert on Saturday. The entire show included five pieces and they were all marvelous. Throughout the show, there was a lot of body contact and the dancer seemed as if they didn’t mind another person being in their kinesphere. We had dancers carrying each other across the stage and others on the ground touching back to back then stomach to stomach. Many different levels were being explored too. They had moments where they would go through all three levels within a time span of thirty seconds. All of the dances had a meaning behind them. For instance, the first piece which was portraying the downfall of the Icarus. The leading dancer started off standing on a high platform but …show more content…
There were eleven dancers on the stage. The most out of all the other dances. They all spaced the stage and started dancing. It was different from the other pieces. This dance was more modern, hype and just all around fun. The choice of music was great and the energy I sensed as they danced was high. They all had smiles on their faces as they were dancing. They weren’t as serious and it was as they were letting all their problems go and just having fun. It really made me feel comfortable and relaxed. That’s why I chose to talk about this piece. Their elevations relatively the same throughout this piece. Locomotion was active the whole time. No one ever stayed still. They were too energetic to stay still for more than a second. Their flow was restricted but only because there were eleven dancers on a small stage. Other than that, they find ways to cut through each other without interrupting someone’s motion. The speed and pace of the dancers' motion were quick. The length of their motions were not long then two seconds. They all danced as a group, there were some parts where ten of them left the stage and it turned into a solo, but the majority of the time it was a group …show more content…
Knowing my body, I felt envious of the fact that there were dancers doing handless cartwheels while I can’t do a regular cartwheel. After I remembered that they worked hard to get such athleticism I couldn’t be mad anymore. So I started to become energetic watching them dance. I wanted to get out of my seat and start doing my signature shoulder shrug move but I didn’t want to disturb anyone. It came to the point that the ferocious energy they were dancing with transferred to me. Dance is about making your body release an energy and transferring that energy into feelings. The energy released depends on the dancer but that what it’s about. Making every last move make either yourself or other people feel different. That’s what I learned from watching this show.it’s about. Making every last move make either yourself or other people feel different. That’s what I learned from watching this
The dancers did not seem defeated, but slightly emotionally disconnected. I felt like this signified the exhaustion that comes while waiting for the rain. There were several positions that were held in the first part of the dance. I also noticed that flicking motions were a motif in the dance, whether that be from their wrists or their ankles. Morgan Moore first showed this motif as she held her leg up in a tilted position and stared down at the sheet below her. She began to flick her wrists which not only reminded me of one who is flicking the rain off their fingertips, but it looked like a begging
The dancers begin in unison in a large clump. They dance together with slow movements; reaching up with their arms straight and palms open. It is to be noted that when they stretch their arms up, they tilt their head and look up as well. Throughout the piece the dancers repeat this movement, which represents reaching and praying to God. The dancers are constantly reaching up, embodying their despair and their yearning for help. As the dance progresses, the dancers repeatedly break out of the clump in the center and do different movements and their own sequences. After this, they always go back to their clump and do synchronized movement. Their constant breaking away from the group symbolizes their continual want to be free, as well as their persistency. On the other hand, their constant going back to the group shows how African-Americans will always be joined together by their culture, prayer, and hardships. Additionally during the piece, multiple dancers will run up to another dancer and jump or hold onto them, and then they do a couple of movements together. This shows how they are reliant and dependent on each other, and how they need each other throughout their suffering. Lastly, Much of the movement in this section possesses the downward energy characteristic of African dance, which symbolizes a connection to the earth. The choices Ailey made choreographically communicates all
I considered myself a performer, and after years training as a classical ballerina I expanded into stunting and tumbling. While on tour, I developed friendships and bonds with dancers strengthened by a mutual love for dance, a commonality over the pain our bodies endured daily, and conversations on bruised and broken toes.
There are these two video examples representative of their respective ballet eras are twenty. A presentation of dance, Contemporary Ballet. The show still had basics skill and the traditional dances are also included. These two video still have basics move like classical ballet. The dancer begins in a Classical Ballet 5th position of the feet, but her arms, instead of a soft, rounded shape, are dangling limply at her side like we studied in this chapter;
As stated before, we began by breaking apart the stages of life and assigning each individual solos depending on the individual’s preference. Then, due to our time constraints, we opted to create our solos on our own time and to work on the movements that all of us must do together, together. The primary strategy of creating our movements and choreography for the dance was to correspond our movements to the meaning behind the lyrics being sung and the stage of life currently occurring. For example, before my solo as the three of us are playing together as children, the lyrics being sung were, “Are you going to age with grace? Are you going to age without mistakes…?” Because the lyrics were talking about the mistakes and blundering made as one matures, I took begin my solo, angrily kicked down the Jenga tower to show my frustration at my own personal faults. The kick both exhibits my balance as I kick and move my leg into an uncomfortable position and fits into the storyline and music shown, producing a stronger effect on the viewer. This is just one notable example of the many that displayed our
The push and pull was choreographed beautifully and it was an amazing concept to watch someone hold on to their past. This type of dance is not only beautifully but it conveys a message using the body in mixed postures, opening and closing, advancing but not really ever retreating until the end, using straight pathways because the past is
During the performance, the principle of spacing was demonstrated when the dancers scattered themselves across the stage and used excellent spacing. As each scene approached, they respectfully stationed themselves in their allotted positions. Never was the stage oddly spaced or bare. Also, the core principle of dance was demonstrated by using rhythm/time. This referred to the speed of moment of the dancers. Throughout the play, the time of the dancers fluctuated. There were times of excitement when the dancers expressed feelings of joy and therefore they had a fast speed but there are other times when the dancers were confused and uncertain and as a result, their speed were much slower and calmer.
... focus. The dancers execute techniques and moves that are absolutely graceful and beautiful. The moves flow nicely from one to another. Towards the end of the dance all of the dancers begin to fade away into the darkness of the stage except for three of the dancers. After some time, each dancer begins to dance back into the spotlight to join the other dancers. They do not come all at once but instead one by one. This dance has a lot of shadows because of the way the stage is lit up. The dancers’ white tights have a purpose, they are meant to stand out in the dark and demonstrate that the dancers are still a part of the dance. Within the dance there are some small stunts. The dancers pick up other dancers and pose them in the air for a small amount of time. At the very end, the dancers return to their positions on the ground just like from the beginning of the dance.
The melody gets bolder and more excited. The entire orchestra was heavily involved in this piece with all parts carrying the melody. Even the percussion section and the brass section had a strong presence here. As a dance piece, I was surprised that the beginning was so gentle. As the piece progressed, I found myself more and more intrigued.
Because the colors, lines, costumes, and movements I could tell that the artist intended for the viewers to get emotional. My overall opinion of this piece was that I liked it very much. When looking around at the audience, I could tell the artist was getting the reaction they wanted because the audience was very quiet, many people looked like they connected with this piece, and some were crying. I thought Jeffrey did especially good in this dance because he carried his moves out to the very max and displayed great emotion. The piece overall was
To me, it seemed that the dancers were people reflecting on their life, and in the past, they had been little girls that had experienced a loss. I remember hearing the lyrics “tore my yellow dress and, Cried and cried and cried” and I noticed that all the dancers were wearing yellow dresses. It also conveyed the loneliness felt with loss of a loved one by showing one dancer on the stage while all the other dancers came onstage one by one. Then, at the end of the dance, all the dancers left the stage one by one, while one dancer stayed on the looking back at them. It created a sort forlorn feeling, almost as if that character was used to getting
The dancers were technically proficient at their work. When the audience got a behind the scene peek during the performance, they got to explore the mechanics of the production of the dance. Strength, acrobatic flexibility, and athleticism, and balance all contribute to the effortless dancing and tricks done. The costumes of the dancers were well fitting in a sense. The nudity presented by the trio when the audience was exposed to the love story, made sense because this was the girl’s stage of life where she was exploring the elements of acceptance, emotion,
The passion and intensity each performer played with pulled you into the performance keeping you engaged until the end of the piece. I really enjoyed this song; the different layers of instruments produced a cool energy and made for a great
At the beginning of this book the author describes the dancers coming in on a rainy Monday morning to begin warm-ups and rehearsal. This of course is the beginning of their voyage to opening night. The dancers taking part in this production were from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. The ballet that they plan to perform in seven weeks is called “Speeds.” The choreographer of “Speeds” is a world-renowned woman by the name of Jennifer Mullers. This production contains a cast of eleven dancers and five alternates. “Speeds” is a modern ballet that explains how one moment in time is like no other, and how often things in the world change.
On the night of the DancePlus performance, I saw numerous little performances. There were six of them in total and the one I had most reactions and favors to is the last one of the first half, which is called Swampin. It was choreographed by John Evans with additional material by Oluwadamilare Ayoride, Jennifer Payan and surprisingly, the dancers. Usually what I would expect from a piece of dance performance is choreographers dominating the process of being creative on the grounds o f coming up dance moves. However, this time, it is nice to see how the dancer actually participating first hand in the creating process of the whole performance which would definitely benefit the quality of the dance, since the dancers would their own choreography
