Observing two different types of dance classes was extremely interesting. I was able to recognize the many differences and similarities between the rehearsal, and the regular dance class I observed. Even though the rehearsal and the regular class I observed were ballet; they were still very different from one another. The regular class I observed was Modern Dance 54. This class is not a beginner class nor an advance class. It is a course for dancers in the middle. People who have some type of experience in dance and want to get better. At first before attending the rehearsal and dance class I was not very interested in going. After going to the rehearsal I found it very interested and was excited to see the difference in a regular class.
I have never attended and observed a rehearsal sesion before of any kind. After going to my first one I was really impressed on how hard the dancers practice. Before attending the rehearsal I did not think I would be that engaged during the time I was there observing. It made me realize dance is as tough as a sport. One of these difference was that in the rehearsal the dancers each practiced on their own. They completely understood their parts in the dance, and were off to side of the stage mastering their each individual parts. Compared to the regular dance class the students were learning brand new dance movements and were following the instruction step by step. Another difference I noticed between these two classes was in the rehearsal class I noticed much more percussive moves. Compared to the regular dance class the moves were way more lyrical. Another difference I noticed was the choreographer in the rehearsal class was much more fast pace than the instructor in the regular dance class. Movies with dancing have always been a big success, simply because they cause people to want to move and be free like the actors on the set. Dirty Dancing, directed by Emile Ardolino, is a movie that makes people want to jump into the screen and be a part of the show. It is a favorite among teenage girls simply because of the kind of dancing that is performed. Another movie, Save the Last Dance, directed by Thomas Carter, is also well liked by teenage girls because of the dance moves. These two movies portray similar stories of girls finding happiness through expression of different kinds of dancing.
In the video Disrupting the Miseducation of African American Youth, the speaker Kwame Shake Opare discuss how he used dance to open the eyes and show opportunities to young students in the Baltimore city school system. The similarities that I observed is that modern dance pioneers placed emphasis on body movements. Martha Graham stated that modern dance is easy, glamorous and delightful. To me is a dance that is difficult to perform even when some of the body movements appeared easy for people do such as arm movement, falling and getting up. Moreover, the differences that I observed were the techniques of movements that each choreographer/pioneer used. For instance Martha Graham technique includes the used coordination, "contraction and release". Duncan for her part used simple gestures. Over Halloween weekend, Dance TCU in concert, performed at Ed Landreth Hall on the TCU campus, was a mid term showcase performed by the students in the TCU School for Classical and Contemporary Dance. The overall mood was very professional. These college level dancers performed various pieces from Giselle to video edited versions of dance to contemporary dances inspired by swing dancing. Each piece was unique and whether the style was classical or contemporary, the execution was very good. The quality of the performance was spectacular and showed all the work that everyone involved in the production has put out to perfect all the aspects of the show come together. I needed to find a source that provided me with evidence of multiple dance teachers’ methods in order to show that they were not using math, indicating that there are other ways of teaching dance that are even more useful than integrating mathematical concepts. I found a source in Library West that supplied this support in the book Talent Abounds: Profiles of Master Teachers and Peak Performers. The chapter entitled “Modern Dance Masters” provided me with the information I needed. The author, Robert F. Arnove, talked with five different dancers, all prominent in the field of modern dance. He discusses the dancers’ ideal techniques/qualities of teaching and learning in a dance setting, all of which he gained through his conversations with them. All of the dancers predominantly discussed the personality of the teachers and students, their creativity and imagination, and their enthusiasm, indicating that they do not perceive a use in involving mathematics within the process of dance education.
