Question
Will cultural differences in Japanese children and American children affect the way they recognize emotions, such as sadness?
Logic
The question can be converted into an experimental design where the children are presented with different faces that are in all different aspects of sadness. The independent variable is the race of the child (American or Japanese) and the dependent variable is their ability to recognize sad faces.
Methods
The faces that the children would see will range from happy to indifferent to distraught faces and the participants would then have to identify the emotion that they saw on the face (sad, happy, indifferent, etc.). The children would be measured on their ability

Cultural Differences in Child Development Expectations ABSTRACT -------- A small research has been carried in order to find out how different cultural backgrounds can influence a child’s developmental expectations in adults and the consequences of these expectations. The design of the method was a replication of Hess et al., 1980, study, applied into two mothers with early age daughters, coming from two different cultural backgrounds, English and Spanish. They answered at what age they thought different statements about child development would be reached by their children and being these statements about grouped into 6 main developmental areas the averages were calculated and compared. The results showed an earlier expectation of achievement in all areas of development, except for independence, in the English participant and a complete opposite position of the Spanish participant expecting a late development of the child in general.
A sample of children ranging from 4 to 13 years old are going to be asked to watch a Rainbow Brite video. The children will be randomly picked from a childcare center. To ensure that the children are going to be randomly assigned, the children will range in different age groups. The first group will consist of 4, 6, and 8 year olds. The second group will consist of 10,12, and 14 year olds. It would have to be a field experiment because you have to go out and collect the data.

Cultures are a complicated characteristic to understand. Living in the United States all of my life I never truly understood other cultures. When I would see people from other cultures come into my work or see them at school I thought they were bizarre. Last summer I went overseas to England, Ireland, and Wales. In the United States the law says you have to be twenty one or older to consume alcohol. In Europe the legal drinking age is suppose to be eighteen, but I found that as long as you have money and can see over the bar you are able to purchase alcohol. The ideas of this article intrigued me because of the information presented in the beginning paragraphs. This article elaborates upon how important the ability of being able to distinguish between positive and negative emotions is. Through the faces presented in the start of the article, I learned that affective development “generally precedes cognitive and behavioral development, as children experience emotions and react to them long before they are able to verbalize or cope. However, social and emotional competencies do not unfold automatically; rather they are strongly influenced by the child’s early learning environment” (Kramer, Caldarella, Christensen & Shatzer 2010).
