1. Research aims I suggest a “cultural competence training” as a key component of the implementation strategy to provide the intervention in the real world with fidelity. The cultural competence training can be a basic requirement for mental health professionals working with culturally diverse children in the school-based setting, as well as the strategy may improve the quality of school-based mental health interventions for East Asian immigrant children. A research question could be: Can the cultural competence training be an appropriate implementation strategy to reduce mental health problems among East Asian immigrant children? In general, there are many cultural barriers in mental health services that hinder the successful intervention providing among East Asian immigrant children. For the success of providing interventions for the immigrant children who have mental health problems, implementation of the cultural competence training strategy would be necessary. Because, I assume that cultural competence training begins with the increased self-awareness of the staff’s or the clinician’s own value towards cultural diversity and cultural dynamics as a result of interactions with East Asian immigrant children. It is important to include cultural issues in the helping process to be more effective. We also need cultural competence because the U.S. is becoming more diverse. Therefore with diversity comes different beliefs, norms, and values. It is important for a counselor to be culturally competent. This is not always an easy task because there are a lot of different cultures with different values. The Racial/ Cultural Identity Development Model was created to help counselors understand their culturally diverse clients more. This model has five levels: conformity, dissonance, resistance and immersion, introspection, and integrative awareness. In this essay I am going to describe these levels and how it can impact the counseling process.
Cultural Competence Understanding culture is an important aspect of being a social worker; this does not mean learning common cultural traits is of great significance to the social work profession. “Consider the second-generation Japanese-American social worker whose practice consists of Mexican-American and African-American families. Memorizing national traits or cultural rituals would be interesting and informative, but ultimately these would be an inaccurate basis on which to “know” these particular families” (Dorfman, 1996, p. 33). When understanding cultural competence, it is important to learn from the client about their culture in order to serve them in the most helpful and efficient way possible. Cultural shame and social stigma are the primary reasons hindering Vietnamese American parents from recognizing mental illness in their children and utilizing mental health services and support. There is no significant difference in comparing the first generation with the second generation of Vietnamese American in terms of their views or perspectives on mental health. Despite the difference experiences and opportunity the second generation receiving including possible higher education and SES (social economic status). Cultural Competence is important for many reasons. First, it can help develop culturally sensitive practices which can in turn help reduce barriers that affect treatment in health care settings. Upon review of the current literature concerning multicultural counseling, it has become evident that a competent counselor is an individual both aware of his culture, and dually aware of his client’s cultural point of view. In order to be a counselor who is competent in his craft, an understanding of other cultures must first be accomplished, and integrated as part of a counseling modality that is both flexible and able to accommodate client concerns in whatever manner they manifest. This incorporation is crucial in becoming a more culturally aware and sensitive counselor, and is a component worth integrating into practice.
