Some ways that test bias could be decreased is by having the tests measured on cultural bias by another professional or trained expert. The assessment could be given multiple ways to insure the student’s academic achievement and progress are accurately measured.
This is important because it could affect how students are referred for further evaluation. If the scores of the tests were widely different, this could come across that the test was neither valid or reliable. However, if the students all scored within the same percentage, this could mean the test is reliable and valid. The author explains that the problem is that even if the results state you have biases, people might not act in a biases manner. Another reason to limit the test is that people can fool the test by thinking of counter-stereotypes while taking the test. No one knows exactly why people develop biases. The only thing that has reduced biases is having close friendships with people of other ethnic groups. Having counter-stereotypical experiences has proven to lower biases and change how one thinks. However, these experiences will not eliminate biases altogether. Banaji believes that in order to eliminate biases we need to be conscious of our biases and make a conscious effort to stop thinking bias. For example, engaging with people you typically wouldn’t normally talk to can help eliminate biases. I like to think I hang out with a diverse group of people, but I also know that I am bias. Parents and advocates of education can all agree that they want their students to be in the best hands possible in regards to education. They want the best teachers, staffs, and schools to ensure their student’s success. By looking at the score results from standardized testing, teachers can evaluate effectively they are doing their job. On the other side, a proponent for eliminating standardized testing would argue that not all students care passionately about their education and will likely not perform to expectations on the test. However, receiving the numerical data back, teachers can construe the student’s performances and eliminate the outliers of the negligent kids. Teachers can then look at the individual scores and assign those outliers to get the help they need in school. This helps every student getting an equal chance at education. Overall, taking a practice standardized test can let a teacher look at individual questions and scores and interpret what they need to spend more time on teaching. A school also can reap the benefits from standard testing to ensure they are providing the best possible education they can. The school can look at the average scores from a group and hold the teacher accountable for the student’s results on the test. The school can then determine the best course of action to pursuit regarding the teacher’s career at the school. The hidden bias test by Project Implicit was interesting method of determining hidden biases. A hidden bias is, “Biases thought to be absent or extinguished remain as "mental residue" in most of us.”(Teaching Tolerance, 2014). Studies have shown a link between biases and behavior and biases can be revealed through an individual’s actions. If biases are revealed through actions then they must be learned. Teaching Tolerance indicates, “Bias is perpetuated by conformity with in-group attitudes and socialization by the culture at large.” (Teaching Tolerance, 2014). This perspective supports the belief which biases are learned and never forgotten and reestablished through behavior. My perception of biases is they are formed through experiences not group conformity. Culture is important influence in forming biases, yet biases can change. According to Teaching Tolerance, even if a bias still changes it lingers in the unconscious. An interesting perspective, biases continue to stay with each of us even if we think it is hidden.

This test is a great example of cultural bias. Cultural bias in teaching occurs when classroom instruction largely reflect the teachers cultural values and perspectives. Leading to a situation in which the students in the predominate culture group perform better than other culture groups in the class. In the United States, the culture that is predominating is the White European American group. Most textbook and standardizes test were created by White European Americans. The problem is our classrooms are composed of not only the dominate culture but also many other cultures. We as teachers need to make an effort to teach and test in such a way as to be inclusive to all cultures represented in our classrooms.

In America the clashing of cultures is inevitable due to the different backgrounds that make up the country --- especially when it comes to treating patients medicinally or through more traditional ways. The conflict occurs in The Spirit Catches you and You Fall Down By Anne Fadiman, when the culture of western medicine collides with Hmong practices. A daughter of a Hmong family, Lia, suffers from epilepsy and is brought to the Merced Community Medical Center (MCMC) to seek treatments that will alleviate the symptoms of her seizures. While the doctors and parents try to find ways to help Lia, they encounter cultural barriers such as their differences in practicing medicine that inhibit their ability to help her efficiently. The MCMC doctors and the parents are both responsible for the increasing cultural conflicts because of their negative biases towards each other long before they meet.These negative biases were later enforced by their lack of trust and respect as the book progressed.
Standardized tests are biased to certain students whether it is race, or even how much money the parent(s) earn. According to Standardized Testing and Its Victims by Alfie Kohn, the tests are a lot easier for children coming from richer communities like Dublin for example, then Cleveland where funding is scarce (Kohn, 2000). It is not just a rich and poor battle it also is a battle with students and regional or language barriers. According to Uyen Zimmerman, my former math instructor from Dublin Coffman, explained English as a second language students interpret asked questions phrased strangely to them differently than a student whose primary language is English. For example, she said there was a question on the ACT that asked a question about folding pizza and an ESL student thought that it meant putting pizza into a folder. Another example is asking students about black ice when students in states such as Hawaii and Louisiana, have never seen or heard of black ice (Zimmerman, 2014). I agree with her completely. All standardized tests are playing with what the creators of the test think is a “standard” and testing all students across America with the exact same questions.
Standardized testing assesses students, teachers, and the school itself, which puts a great deal of pressure on the students. High scores show that the school is effective in teaching students, while low test scores make teachers and schools look as though they are not teaching the students properly. This is not always the case. There are teachers who do teach students what they need to know to pass the test, but their students are still unprepared. Although teachers try to improve instruction, student performance is still variable to other factors that the school cannot control.

While psychological assessment can be useful, it is merely a tool that provides a piece of a puzzle when assessing individuals. Many things need to be considered in addition to psychological assessment to generate the most accurate results. No individual is exactly the same, therefore a standarized assessment tool will remain flawed. Cultural and linguistic differences are important to acknowledge and understand in efforts to reduce bias in assessment tools.
Standardized tests are administered to allow reliable and valid comparisons to be made among students taking the test. Two major types of standardized tests are currently in use; norm-referenced and criterion-referenced. A norm-referenced test is a test that has been given to representative samples of students such that norms of performance are established. Each student taking the test receives a score that can be compared to the norm or normal or sample of students. The scores are then reported in percentiles. The main purpose of these tests is to rank students along a distribution of performance. Because of this tests are likely to have items that are very difficult for the grade level so students can be ranked. A criterion-referenced test looks like a norm-referenced test but multiple choice items are used and directions are standardized. The reason these tests are administered is based upon the content that all students are expected to learn. Scores are based on the amount learned by the student and a passing score is then given. These scores are not compared to other students. Standardized tests are used to show how a student is doing. They can show if a program is working well and can show if the educators are using effective teaching methods. Schools are graded to see if there overall program is helping the student to achieve their goals. In the next paragraphs I am going to explain to you about the purpose of the American College Testing Program (ACT) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
Since elementary school, students have been sharpening their No. 2 pencils, preparing to fill in the bubbles on their standardized tests. To younger children, these tests aren’t a very big deal. But little do they know that the tests they take in elementary school are practice for the biggest test they will take in their lives. This test is the ACT, or the SAT. These tests are a huge deal. Students’ results on these tests could change their plans for the future, and that’s a lot of pressure. So are these tests really all that they are made out to be? Are they really that important enough to stress about so much? Many people have started to say that standardized tests are hurting American schools, and that they put too much pressure on students.
It has been seen that factors like one’s economic and racial background can heavily influence one’s performance on a tests, as they are not given the same opportunities as those given to more affluent students. A student’s emotional well-being is also at stake as many students come out of tests doubting their overall intelligence, even though they were quite confident in the material and so much is hinged on test scores that it places a great deal of pressure on students to do well. Standardized tests also restrict teacher’s ability to learn due to the restrictions that standardized test place on the material being taught, which makes it very hard for teachers to go beyond the required and teach more interesting things. Due to the issues that have arisen from standardized tests many alternative solutions have been used and have been proven to be successful. Some good alternative solutions have been limiting the amount of standardized tests given by sampling a few students, shortening the length of exams, and allotting more time to complete these tests. Other alternatives look to more qualitative approaches in learning by implementing things like projects and portfolios that give an excellent insight to a student’s performance and
...verage. When having test scores as an indication of a school’s competency, everything will be out of place, time oriented into a time slot we do not have the right amount of time for, and students will be peer pressured and possibly embarrassed.
