The overall purpose of schooling is to advance one’s knowledge and skill base and through standardized testing the belief is that one’s knowledge and skill base can be assessed and analyzed, but what occurs many a times is a teacher's difficulty to expand upon the learning process due to the confinements that testing has on his/hers ability to teach. In a qualitative study performed by the Morehead State University it was determined that in a particular rural school standardized testing had implemented a limit on the amount of time that teachers were able to instruct, as well as limitations on the “instructional resources and the types of assessments teachers employed” (Thomas, 2005). mandated material it was seen that while preparing students for a variety of standardized tests, teachers were unable to dive deep into the material and had to resort to briefly stating much of the content (Thomas, 2005). This trend is not only unique to this particular school, but is common throughout the educational process in the United States, as teachers are unable to pool together material they feel is interesting and important. This situation is even worse in schools who have low test scores as it forces the school to focus “all their attention on basic reading and math skills…[and] schools were rated based on their test scores and those that did not improve could eventually be closed” (Taylor, 2016).
Teachers who lack passion and desire to teach what they are given can translate and manifest its way to students as they also lose aspirations to come to school and learn only what will be on exams they are supposed to take to show that they are “learning.” Students come to school to learn things they did not know prior and with the acquisition of knowledge it can many a times create a drive for students to expand upon a particular subject, which can ultimately determine their careers and goals, but this whole process is shutdown with standardized tests, as many topics and subjects are limited to a few basic ones that put out the fire students are expected to have.

restricted teachers’ abilities to teach, some may argue that standardized testing is doing its job in proving if students have actually learned the skills they are supposed to possess in their respective grade, but is it really? A study was performed to test the validity of a variety of standardized tests and it was found that many factors threaten test validity and these factors fall into two main categories: “1) content irrelevance—factors that incorrectly and systematically increase or decrease test scores for some students, and 2) content underrepresentation—flaws in the design of the test that fail to evaluate its full range of content and cognitive behaviors” (Haladyna, 2006). The main goal of tracking student achievements is extremely hard to pull off through one test, as many of the standardized tests given are not able to tests for multidimensional human intelligence with them being primarily one dimensional in approach (Seon-Young et al., 2006). Things like a student’s motivation in taking the test and wanting to do well can overplay the true ability of a student. There is also an issue as previously discussed teachers teach what standardized tests want them to teach and many a times what it really occurring is that teachers are “teaching to the test” (Haladyna, 2006). Is there a real purpose in having students learn tricks to do well on a test instead of actually comprehending and being interested in the given information? Is there way too much dependence on the exams that many people would rather get high test scores than actually walk away and feel like they truly learned something new? These questions and many more shake the foundation that standardized tests lie on as they do not fully accomplish what their goals are and many a times they are doing more harm than good. Many standardized test attackers advance the idea of using a variety of measure and diverse instruments to help in the student identification process (Seon-Young et al., 2006). Many of these alternatives will be discussed in the next section and the question hoping to be answered is if there are superior and successful alternatives to standardized tests? Proven Alternatives It is one thing to note that the current educational system is not perfect and that standardized testing is not really accomplishing what it is set out to do, but it is another to see good alternatives to the current practices. Even though most schools administer standardized tests to gauge student’s progression some schools have sought to use alternative methods that do more than just present a score. One alternative method that seems to be working is the administering of tests to a small representative sample of students instead of giving it to all students. The Council of Chief State School Officers are in favor of this idea as they think “accountability could be achieved at the district level by administering traditional standardized tests to a statistically representative sampling of students, rather than to every student every year” (Kamenetz, 2015). This method is useful as it decreases the amount of time and standardized tests that are given to students in their entire schooling life and with this extra time more learning can occur, which sparks the imaginative minds of students across the nation. Another similar method used was seen in New York State where the education council had instituted reforms that slightly reduced the length of exams and have given unlimited time for students to take the exams (Wallace, 2016). Even though most students know the material that is tested on many find themselves rushing for time and tend to do careless mistakes that they would not have done if there was more time. This alternative is very beneficial as it can make students feel more confident and relaxed when it comes to standardized tests and it can improve scores for all students across the nation. The final successful alternative that will be discussed is looking to other more qualitative assessments to tests students’ performance. It has been seen by research that nonacademic qualities are very prevalent in instances of success, for example perseverance and curiosity (Kamenetz, 2015). These qualities can be seen through “direct demonstrations of student learning,” as seen by projects, individual and group presentations, and portfolios of work over time (Kamenetz, 2015). Many schools in New York use similar styles of demonstrations and it has been seen that these schools possess higher graduation rates and better college-retention rates. By changing how students are tested and what they are tested it is easily seen that standardized tests are very bland in their techniques as many quality skills are overlooked by a mere numerical score, while things like portfolios truly show a student’s capabilities and achievable success. Conclusion In conclusion, the main goals of standardized testing, which is to monitor a student’s learning and overall skills in a particular subject area, are not being met due to a variety of reasons and in many instances are causing more harm than good.
It has been seen that factors like one’s economic and racial background can heavily influence one’s performance on a tests, as they are not given the same opportunities as those given to more affluent students. A student’s emotional well-being is also at stake as many students come out of tests doubting their overall intelligence, even though they were quite confident in the material and so much is hinged on test scores that it places a great deal of pressure on students to do well. Standardized tests also restrict teacher’s ability to learn due to the restrictions that standardized test place on the material being taught, which makes it very hard for teachers to go beyond the required and teach more interesting things. Due to the issues that have arisen from standardized tests many alternative solutions have been used and have been proven to be successful. Some good alternative solutions have been limiting the amount of standardized tests given by sampling a few students, shortening the length of exams, and allotting more time to complete these tests. Other alternatives look to more qualitative approaches in learning by implementing things like projects and portfolios that give an excellent insight to a student’s performance and
knowledge.
Parents and advocates of education can all agree that they want their students to be in the best hands possible in regards to education. They want the best teachers, staffs, and schools to ensure their student’s success. By looking at the score results from standardized testing, teachers can evaluate effectively they are doing their job. On the other side, a proponent for eliminating standardized testing would argue that not all students care passionately about their education and will likely not perform to expectations on the test. However, receiving the numerical data back, teachers can construe the student’s performances and eliminate the outliers of the negligent kids. Teachers can then look at the individual scores and assign those outliers to get the help they need in school. This helps every student getting an equal chance at education. Overall, taking a practice standardized test can let a teacher look at individual questions and scores and interpret what they need to spend more time on teaching. A school also can reap the benefits from standard testing to ensure they are providing the best possible education they can. The school can look at the average scores from a group and hold the teacher accountable for the student’s results on the test. The school can then determine the best course of action to pursuit regarding the teacher’s career at the school. By offering teachers and schools the opportunity to grow and prosper, standardized testing is a benefit for the entire education
Michele Obama once stated, “If my future were determined just by my performance on a standardized test, I wouldn 't be here. I guarantee you that.” The First Lady is, in other words, to say that standardized testing was a major factor into her life’s outcome and her scores could have potentially not put her in her position of power that she is highly recognized in today’s society. One time I heard a teacher at my old high school tell a new teacher that their job is to teach to the test and nothing else. I did not really know what she meant, but I knew something about what she said sounded very wrong. I thought why are they just teaching us how to pass the test instead of just teaching us what we need to know? Later I found out that whether or not I graduate depends on passing the test. The idea of standardized testing to say whether or not students graduate is a bad one. Not just bad for schools, principals, and teachers, but it can mean the end of a student’s future before it begins. That means not only does schools suffer, but everyone in our communities, states, and country suffers. It used to be that students had to take standardized tests every year. The results of these tests said what school districts would get more money or less money for the next school year. And it would also tell schools and teachers if some students needed to be put into higher level programs such as gifted and talented or advanced placement courses or if they were having problems and should be put in special education.
In the society of today, there are various educators who believe in assessment as proper method to measure the performance of a child in school as well as the overall achievement of a specific school system. The assessment may be presented in the form of verbal, written, or multiple choice, and it usually pertains to certain academic subjects in the school curriculum. Recently, many educators began to issue standardized tests to measure the intelligence of a common student body. (Rudner, 1989) These standardized tests were initially created to reveal the success in institutional school programs, and exhibit the abilities of students today. The standardized tests can reveal the strengths and weaknesses of a student as well as the admission into certain programs. The test results also assist various schools in determining the proper curriculum, evaluate a specific school system, or a particular school related program.
Since the U.S. Congress passed the No Child Left Behind program, standardized testing has become the norm for American schools. Under this system, each child attending a school is required to take a standardized test at specific grade points to assess their level of comprehension. Parents, scholars and all stakeholders involved take part in constant discussions over its effectiveness in evaluating students’ comprehension, teachers’ competency and the effects of the test on the education system. Though these tests were put in place to create equality, experts note that they have created more inequality in the classroom. In efforts to explore this issue further, this essay reviews two articles on standardized testing. This essay reviews the sentiments of the authors and their insight into standardized examination. The articles provide sufficient evidence to demonstrate that standardized tests are not effective at measuring a teacher’s competency because they do not take into account the school environment and its effect on the students.
Standardized testing is not the best way to measure how well a teacher teaches or how much a student has learned. Schools throughout the United States put their main focus on standardized tests; these examinations put too much pressure on the teachers and students and cause traumatizing events. Standardized testing puts strain on teachers and students causing unhealthy occurrences, Common Core is thrown at teachers with no teaching on how to teach the new way which dampers testing scores for all students, and the American College Test determines whether a child gets into college or not based on what they have learned during high school. Standardized testing has become something of a norm under the No Child Left Behind Act. It has left the student and teacher responsible in having high test scores and has forced teachers to teach directly by the curriculum. What standardized testing does do is help develop memory, but at the cost of creativity (Emanuel 9-10). This is the problem behind standardized testing is that it has become linear and obsolete (Emanuel 9-10). It has been noticed by many for example Sir Ken Robinson said,” Testing in principal is a logical way of measuring student knowledge”, but he continues by saying that, “In practice it creates a very dry learning environment”. This shows that the No Child Left Behind Act and standardized testing is not working, but why and how can it be fixed.
In the United States of America, Standardized testing has become a way of life for students and children, especially in public schools. Many argue that standardized testing does not measure the students as a whole, takes up valuable classroom time, and creates drastic mental health problems in students and teachers. With a standardized curriculum comes standardized testing. A standardized curriculum limits what students learn. Students master content areas (Cole, Hulley, & Quarles, 2013). Students are not encouraged to go in depth of content knowledge. According to Adler (2013), objectives of the school should be the same for the whole school. To obtain these objectives teachers use lecturing, textbooks, coaching, and supervised practices. Students are not exploring the content beyond what is expected. Teachers are teaching to the test because that is what is expected of them. Students are not growing and exploring with knowledge. Content is watered down and vague for students (Noddings, 2013).
Standardized testing is not an effective way to test the skills and abilities of today’s students. Standardized tests do not reveal what a student actually understands and learns, but instead only prove how well a student can do on a generic test. Schools have an obligation to prepare students for life, and with the power standardized tests have today, students are being cheated out of a proper, valuable education and forced to prepare and improve their test skills. Too much time, energy, and pressure to succeed are being devoted to standardized tests. Standardized testing, as it is being used presently, is a flawed way of testing the skills of today’s students.
There’s nothing worse than to have students sum up all their knowledge, skills, thoughts, talents, and abilities into one multiple-choice test with one “right” answer. This is why assessments must encompass more ways of evaluating students than a paper and pencil strategy that does not account for the various competences of every student. This is one of the many reasons why standardized testing has been undoubtedly one of the most controversial topics in education to date. With this being said, there are alternatives to standardized tests that involve different opportunities including portable portfolios, performance exams, exhibitions, and/or recorded sessions to better “test” a student’s knowledge and abilities.
Standardized tests are used to evaluate a student’s performance, however, tests do not take external factors into account. This already means that tests are often inaccurate methods of measuring a students academic potential. Also, the tests do a disservice to students as they evaluate their proficiency at a time of testing, rather than their growth and improvement over the course of the year. The tests develop high levels of stress in students, which is not healthy for an individual during the most important development years of their lives. Eliminating these tests will assist students in the long run as they can accommodate more time towards learning information rather than stressing over a single test. By replacing tests with more in-class lessons students will be free of constant stress and still learn the curriculum. Research shows that students are unable to remember information on standardized tests in the long run, therefore, by spending more time learning and understanding information, students are able to have a better understanding of topics. Stiggins suggests that while standardized testing may be useful and effective in some aspects, most are not used correctly and that the high-stakes put intense pressure on teachers, making it difficult to actually complete their job which is to teach students new skills. They simply spend their time reviewing already learned skills to ensure good scores on exams.
