Hello Ms. Harless and Sr. Angeles, It has been brought to our attention that Avinash received a Disciplinary Notice for cutting another student's hair. Sorry, we did not see the FastDirect messages earlier. We don't check FastDirect on a daily basis. Avinash was open to telling us his side of the story and feared that if he told you, he would somehow get in more trouble. According to him, it wasn't a bullying act nor did someone put him up to it. He was simply returning Mya's scissors. Waiting for her to take the scissors back, he was repeated opening and closing the scissors. When Mya turned around, due to the close proximity of their desks, her hair got caught in the scissors, and some of it was snipped off. He said it was about three inches long and a quarter inch diameter's worth of hair. He immediately apologized and that was that. …show more content…
From Ms. Harless's initial email, it sounded as if Avinash pulled the girl's hair and cut it near the scalp. Frankly, it is hard to believe that Avinash would have the audacity to pull such a stunt, considering he tries his best to stay out of any trouble. After 16 years, I think you know well enough that our kids would not behave in such a way. In response to what was written on the notice, no one would have predicted such an incident simply because it was not intentional. I think more than anything, a simple lesson on how to pass scissors safely could avoid an issue like this from happening
High school student “John Doe” responded to peer teasing by choking the student and then kicking out a school window. Middle school student “Jack Smith” made sexual lewd comments to female classmates. Both had a history of hostile and aggressive behaviors that are manifestations of their disabilities. On the fifth day of the school suspension, the district notified both boys’ parents that they were proposing expulsion and they extended suspension until the expulsion proceedings were finished. Doe filed suit against the school district and the superintendent on grounds that the disciplinary actions violated the “stay-put” provision of the then Education of the Handicapped Act (EHA) (later IDEA). Having learned of Doe’s case, Smith also protested the school’s actions and intervened in Doe’s
His February 1980 IEP claimed Smith was easily distracted, anxious and impulsive. It was proposed Smith be placed on a trial basis of a half day schedule. The following year when assigned to a full-day program, Smith started having misbehavior issues. The school met with the grandparents (guardians) and it was agreed to reduce Smith’s attendance to half-days with the warning that if his behavior continued, he would be expelled. In November, Smith was suspended for five days after lewd comments were made to another student. The SPC, similar to Doe’s case, extended the suspension indefinitely. Late November, it was protested the actions were almost identical to Doe’s and Smith was allowed to return to the half-day program at A.P.
DSS received a report of physical abuse, physical neglect and substantial risk of physical abuse on March 3, 2017 alleging there is chaos in the home. After returning with his brothers from their cousin’s house, the boys had to go to bed. The reporter stated that Xzavia banged on his mother’s bedroom door on three separate occasions wanting something to eat. The first time he was told to go back to bed and a popping noise was heard. The second time Ms. Kimberly Dawkins grabbed Xzavia by the head, shook him little and told him to go back to bed. The third time Ms. Dawkins grabbed Xzavia, threw him on the bed, got a gun, held him down and pointed it at him. Reporter states there was no clip in the gun. Ms. Dawkins was reported being upset and it was reported that she left the home for twenty minutes but came back. It was reported that while Ms. Dawkins was gone, Xzavia was very upset and he was crying and Tyzhaun stared punching holes in the wall. It was reported that Xzavia says he wanted to die and that Atmorris went and got a knife, stated to Xzavia, “You want to die?”, here’s the knife and the two older brothers, Tyzhaun and Atmorris left the house and Xzavia chased them. It was reported that Xzavia was outside crying and he spent the night with the neighbor.
The author also referred to the hair of Zeena and Mattie quite often. Zeena had only “thin strands of hair”, and she wore a “hard perpendicular bonnet” above her head. The sight imprinted in the reader’s mind is not a pleasant one. Zeena appears to be stern and rigid. On the contrary when Mattie’s hair was described, it is more appealing. Ethan remembers her “smoothed hair and a ribbon at her neck”. A ribbon is more appealing to the reader than a “hard, perpendicular bonnet.” Mattie’s hair was also described as looking like a “drift of mist on the moon”. Unlike Zeena’s uninviting hairstyle, Mattie’s hair had a soft and silky quality to it. Mattie seemed to walk about the house with a halo of light surrounding her, almost like an angel. The conflicting hairstyles of the two women represented an overall difference in personalities. Mattie was a feminine young girl, while Zeena was an old hag who made no attempt to better her appearance.
I would follow what Principal Milhoviak did, which is contact my discipline team and get their points of view. Prior to that, I would need to understand the main problem. It sounded like he did that by talking with the sister and getting her story. This is the first step, understanding the situation. The next step is formulating a solution on how to handle the situation. This is where getting other people involved was a great idea. Principals know they cannot do it alone so they need to have a team, especially in these types of situations. The problem was that team offered many suggestions. As a principal I would listen to all of them and also refer to the school handbook. In this case, since the student is not in his fourth period, I would call for the brother and sister back to the office until parents are reached. As a principal the priority is finding the student who made the threat and keeping the victims safe until parents are reached and the team decides what to do next.
For so long Dave’s teachers noticed something was not right with him. He would misbehave, come to school with bruises and lie. The teachers, administration and nurses finally caught on to what was going on at Dave’s house and reported the issue immediately. When Dave and his mother were questioned by administration, his mother would lie about his injuries; Dave would lie as well because he knew if he did not, the beatings would get a lot worse. Therefore, the school did not report anything to authorities. I believe that if a teacher notices a sign of abuse, administration should go above and beyond to figure out what is going on. They should also get the child immediate help. Children are not born to misbehave in such a way as stealing food from other children. There has to be a reason behind their actions and teachers should watch closely. This could change a child’s life forever. This also could give that child a second chance for a better

The teacher then called the principle which resulted in the police being called. When the police got there he asked student to get up and when he didn’t get what he wanted he flipped her out the chair and dragged her across the room. Even though bad behavior is not excepted in schools there could have been different ways the situation could have been handled other than aggressive force.
