There are many examples of cruelty
in literary works. Literary works
such as plays, novels, films, short
stories, and poetry. One may believe
that cruelty is a way of life. Cruelty
is included in great works of
literature such as The Crucible, The
Scarlet Letter, Bartleby, The Red
Badge of Courage, The Last of the
Mohicans, Lottery, Dr. Heidigger’s
Experiment, Redburn, Angel of
Death, Gold Bug, The Tell-tale
Heart, and Night. The following is an
explanation of the cruelty and the
result of it.
In the Last of the Mohicans, there
are many acts of cruelty displayed.
For example, The bad Huron Indian
Magma makes the English troops
walk right into a war party trap. As a
result of this action, The English
troops fought every Indian in the war
party, but three Mohicans killed
most of the Huron. Another example
would be when Monroe won’t let the
militia go back to the frontier to
defend their families. As a result,
Nathaniel helped the people who
wanted to leave, escape. Another
example would be when the Huron
Indians killed Uncas. In turn, Alice
threw herself off a cliff because she
loved him so much. Another
example would be when the French
told the Huron not to attack the
American troops again. As a result,
the Huron attack the American
troops anyway. Theses various
counts of cruelty show that the
Huron Indians are a cruel people.
In The Red Badge of Courage there
also are many acts of cruelty
displayed. For example, Henry runs
away from battle. In turn, Jim and
the rest of the company got wounded
and some died. Another example
would be when the red coats
attacked the Americans. As a result,
Henry ran away again. Another
example would be when the generals
were laughing about the win. In turn,
Henry overheard them and thought
he was celebrating about something
he didn’t help in and was treating the
entire war as a game. Another
example would be War itself. As a
result, Henry gets war fever and runs
in front of the line, in a suicide
attempt. Another example would be
when Henry was asking for help
from a running solider, the solider hit
Henry with the butt of his rifle. In
turn, Henry was knocked out and
left for dead. Unlike the Huron, the
red coats and their own men are the
cruel ones. One of the solider on his
side actually strikes Henry, which
knocks him out. This movie also
illustrates cruelty from a 3rd party,
the generals are not involved directly
yet cause cruelty.
In Bartleby, there are many
occurrences of cruelty. For example,
Bartleby wouldn’t leave the office.
As a result, many people get mad.
Another example would be when
Bartleby’s old boss moved out of the
office. In turn, the new owner came
back to his old boss and said get rid
The Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811 is another example of when America treated Native Americans poorly. This battle was one of the most bloody battles in the U.S. history. It was fought at Prophetstown, Indiana. The Battle of Tippecanoe happened because Harrison wanted to destroy the alliance that was being encouraged by his
An example of this would be Schoolteacher’s pursuit of Sethe and her children after their escape to Cincinnati. After losing most of the Sweet Home men Schoolteacher sets his sights on Sethe and her children in order to make Sweet Home “worth the trouble it was causing him” (Morrison 227). The threat of loss profits motivates Schoolteacher to “secure the breeding one (Sethe)” and “her three pickaninnies” (Morrison 227). He intends to make a living at Sweet Home and is willing to forcibly take his “property” back with him. Schoolteacher will be cruel to his runaways to ensure that he will be able to profit from the farm. Another example of a characters performing cruel acts to meet their goal is Sethe. When Sethe recognizes the hat of Schoolteacher at 124, she gathers all her children and heads to the shed to kill them. Sethe describes her actions to Paul D arguing, “I took and put my babies where they’d be safe” (Morrison 164). Here Sethe reveals the extent to which she will go to protect her children from the horrors of slavery; she is willing to personally kill each of them if it means slavery will not have them. Her love for her family and personal experiences as a victim of slavery cause her to go cruel lengths to ensure her children’s safety. Sethe does not wish for her children a life under slavery’s influence which she herself suffered from at the hands of Schoolteacher and his nephews. Although Sethe and Schoolteacher come from opposite spectrums of slavery as well as race, they both are willing to achieve their ends through brutal actions. Many of the cruel events in the novel stem from slavery and its profit-driving exploits of human
Human beings are an impressionable race who learn from each other what they should and should not do. While this is sometimes a useful trait, in other instances it can lead to death and cruelty. This is showcased copiously in A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. The book starts off with the French nobility horribly mistreating the destitute peasants, beating them and starving them without feeling any guilt whatsoever. To the rebels, it does not matter whether the people they execute are innocent or guilty of crimes against them, and instead see the entire upperclass as responsible for what a portion of them actually did. In this way, the cycle comes to a complete
One such instance was with Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce Tribe. Chief Joseph refused to sign treaties with the government and after some rogue tribesmen attacked some white settlers, he and his tribe tried to flee to Canada but were caught and forced onto a reservation. The battle of Little Bighorn is also known as Custer’s last stand was also a prime example of the cruelty towards the Native Americans. The battle of Little Bighorn took place in 1876 in Montana. The government was falling back on a treaty they signed with the Sioux and Cheyenne Tribes. They were already placed onto a reservation, but when gold was discovered on the reservation Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer was sent to trap them and then wait for backup to force the Native American’s from the land. Custer disobeyed orders and attacked instead. Chief Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull of the Sioux tribes knew of the plan and set a trap for the army regiment and killed all of them. This battle was one of the greatest victories for the Native
How would you like it if you were used in an experiment to see if the mascara your girlfreind used was safe? And then when they were done with you, they disposed of you and killed you off as if you didn’t matter. Well that’s what is being done to animals. They are being tested on. Sometimes scientist give animals radioactive material to eat to see how fast they die. If you know that the animal is going to die, why would you do something so inhumane for no apperant reason?
In today’s culture there is a consensus that opposes animal cruelty, from government organizations to non profit organizations. Is it morally okay to inflict some pain on animals if it is for the benefit of a certain group; can it be justifiable? Tom Regan and Peter Singer position on vivisection but understand moral value in a more individualist term instead of a group of species. Regan and Singer both discuss vivisection in different terms. One looks at it through deontology (Regan) while the other through utilitarianism (Singer).
“I am never afraid of what I know,” Anna Sewell once stated. One cannot cower from their knowledge if they are looking for success. Anna Sewell was a gentle Quaker lady born in 1820 in the UK and died in 1878, also in the UK that was educated at home. She had a disability that prevented her from ever walking upright but had a strong love for horses even in her final days. But she was most famous as a horse abuse preventing author. Anna Sewell produce more copies of Black Beauty than any other book in the US besides the Bible, striving for accuracy to innovate ways to overcome animal abuse - especially to horses - and illuminated the world by inspiring books and other projects to prevent animal abuse.
The story, Lord of the Flies, is heavily influenced by the background of its writer, William Golding. Having lived during times of chaos, and having taught unruly boys, Golding used both to explain the savage nature of humans. In my own judgement, the boys were savage due to the environment they were in.
Animal testing is used to protect the health of humans. Everyday there are millions of people that wake up, not only to get on their daily schedule, but to apply makeup. There are over thousands of makeup brands like Mary Kay, Too Faced, Tarte, Covergirl, Anastasia, and many others. Some brands are well known for being cruelty free and vegan free. There are also some brands for example, Kylie Cosmetics, that are dangerous and very threatening to animals. Not only is there animal testing, but there is another subject; animal cruelty. Animal abuse is increasing to really high extents. Animal cruelty is global but going on in places like the Netherlands, Greece, Romania,
The novel, “Animal Farm,” published in 1945, was written by George Orwell, an English novelist, essayist, and journalist. Animal Farm is an allegorical and political satire novel that is based off the events surrounding the Russian Revolution in 1917. In this hardcover, the animals on the farm dispose of their leader Mr. Jones after ages of mistreatment and unjustified actions. Ran by the pigs, the farm’s most intelligent animal, the farm continues to do their usual business. As time progresses, the pigs start to become more dominant and hungry for power. Eventually they become as their predecessors the humans, corrupt and power hungry. Napoleon and his manipulation, Boxer and his naiveness, and Squealer’s behavior demonstrate how both the
Have you ever thought about where your chicken come from before you put it on your plate? Chickens is one of my major concerns.
Many animals are constantly being abandoned, starved, beaten, killed, forced to fight each other, experimented on, and taken away from their natural environment. All of that would fall under the animal cruelty category. Now people would say that they are just animals and that “beating” is a way of discipling them to learn how to behave or that they are trying to save them for being killed in the wild. Animal cruelty is shown in different ways such as having exotic animals as pets, doing experiments on them as “research” for human medicine, and killings performed by animal shelters where they are suppose to be kept safe. This will soon become a problem not
115 million animals face animal cruelty every year. The animals that go through this tragic experience are mice, rats, dogs, cats, rabbits, monkeys, birds, and the list continues to grow. Over 25 million animals are suffering, harmed or killed for the use of cosmetic testing. They go through various test and are exposed to new chemicals. The purpose for them to be used as experiments is to as always gives us what we want without hurting us delicate humans during the process. What's the purpose of these experiments? Well it’s too basically give us everyday necessities like deodorant, lotions, and the everyday “must have” , makeup.
Animals have always been a key part of my life. Whether it was my personal involvement with them, or my mother and father had brought in another stray that they found in our city of San Bernardino. I had always seen animals, dogs especially, and just viewed them as cute and nothing more. However, as I got older, I began to see that people did not care about their animals or treat them as kindly as I treated mine. I learned about people who use dogs, mostly pitbull's, to fight and gain monetary status from it. I learned about the awful dog meat festival that takes place in China. I learned about the torture and emotional abuse an animal goes through at a slaughterhouse. It all sickened me.
...aught you off base they killed you” (314). Henry sees clearly the tight connection between love and war, as shown when he compares the dying of his beloved with the dying of his combat friends: ”Or they killed you gratuitously like Aymo. Or gave you the syphilis like Rinaldi. But they killed you in the end. You could count on that. Stay around and they would kill you” (aa).
